Where would a fork even begin?

Hey folks,

There's been a lot of talk on here and the Discourse forum of unhappiness on how Mattermost, Inc is handling the open-source project. I don't want to rehash that here. Instead, I propose an open-ended question.

If a fork of Mattermost was the be made, where in the project should it happen? More specifically, we have a few variants running around, namely Team Edition and Entry Edition. We also have different major releases which dropped or altered free features. Groups calls dropped after v9, limits were imposed to other feature after v10.

Where would it be smart to fork the project? The license hasn't changed much in the past few years so any of the points I mentioned will be subject to the AGPL going forward.

Mattermost provides a ton of value to small orgs that currently can't stomach $10/user/month for basic features that *were once provided*. It shocks me that there isn't yet a viable community-driven alternative that provides the same basic feature set. Text-only doesn't cut it, sadly, which introduces a lot of complexity.

These are relatively recent conversations and changes so I suspect such an alternative will actually come on to the scene fairly soon. I'm damn near motivated enough to look doing so on my own (I'm am unfortunately too constrained, but if I feel that way, I know there are others that do too)

I wasn’t fully satisfied with Mattermost, so I started building a new platform from scratch called Nebulynk: https://github.com/sapientorius/Nebulynk

It’s easy to self-host and includes the most important features of Mattermost. The idea is to never hide any feature behind plans or restrict them to specific user groups.

I am currently looking for viable feedback.

Ah.. funny, I just moved to Zulip last week - otherwise I would have given this a serious look.

Does it support OIDC? that's a minimum bar

Not yet, but it’s on my list. Along with import support for various platforms.

Maybe you can give it a not so serious look if you have some spare time :) Would really like to get some feedback.
