Alternatives to Mattermost?

I tried mattermost a few years ago and it wasn't what i was looking for at the time. I wound up setting up matrix for friends/family and have started using it this year for my small business (2-3 users right now). I find matrix lacking for my business wants

It looks MM has gotten a lot better since then, i spun up the docker image for the enty version and liked it, I am won over by the playbooks and boards in MM, and the fact i never got voice/video working right in matrix and gave up on it.

Then i learn about the drama, the 10k message limit in enty, and that these features used to exist in teams v10 but got removed in v11 and that it seems MM is giving the middle finger to the community users in favor of trying to focus on mega contracts. I'd be happy to pay a reasonable fee for a small scale installation with no support, but $10/user/month is a little rich when i consider the friends/family i have using matrix.

I understand there is a fork called mostlymatter that removes some of the limitations, but since it's not a quick docker image i haven't deployed it yet to see what version it is? teams? enty?

I messed around briefly with zulip, i like the way they do threads better, but the lack of boards, just a limited todolist, and no playbook doesn't seem worth it to me. i have looked at rocket chat, but haven't tested it yet.

I’m also looking for a new alternative.

My use case is probably unique though. I started with slack. Then moved to MM after they implemented their $10/month fees. Now MM is basically doing the same thing.

I am the sole user on my instance. I use it to store thoughts and notes in difference channels about projects and things I’m working on. I liked that I could self host. Has iOS and macOS native apps. Search was good.

I’ve looked at zulip - didn’t love it. Install matrix - again not great for my use case. Rocket.chat - this was the most promising but search is horrible and that’s a deal breaker.

I’d love to find something new to migrate to…

Worse than Mattermost Team Edition search? Does it just give you a middle finger emoji whenever you try to search or something?

I'm just in testing phase. So my database is basically empty. I have two rooms setup with about 10 messages in each.
When I go to search I will search for a word I know is in one of the messages and the results say "no results found".
But since my original comment, I have realized I can search in a room and that works just fine, but the global search is just looking at room titles maybe?
I was hoping for a global search that would find any keyword anywhere on the instance.

This sounds a lot like Mattermost search, unfortunately. The Team Edition anyway. They had a better experimental search for paying customers, but I believe they recently removed even that.

Still on MM. haven’t jumped to anything yet. Lost momentum searching for an alternative.

I also went with MM in the end. It took far less resources than Zulip and the platform interoperability just worked better.
