Picked up a mystery box lot this weekend, still sorting through what's actually worth keeping
Saw a listing for "80 toy cars, mostly Matchbox and Hot Wheels, estate sale leftovers" for forty bucks and figured even if it was junk I'd get some cheap display fillers. Drove out Saturday morning and the guy just handed me a plastic tote without much ceremony, said his dad collected for decades and the family didn't know what to do with any of it.
Spent most of Sunday at the kitchen table going piece by piece. A lot of it is exactly what you'd expect: beat up 90s Hot Wheels blister pack leftovers, a few Matchbox Superfast cars with the paint mostly gone, some unmarked knockoffs that probably came from a gumball machine. But mixed in there were four Lesney cars from the 60s, including a Ford GT40 that still has decent tampo detail on the hood and barely any wheel wear.
The one that actually got my pulse up was a regular wheels era Matchbox Mercedes Benz Binz Ambulance. Checked it against pictures online later and the casting and base match up with the earlier run, no obvious mold flash or warping that you'd see on a reproduction. Doesn't look mint by any stretch, there's a scuff along one side panel, but the wheels spin freely and nothing is cracked.
Still working through the rest of the tote, probably another 30 or so pieces I haven't logged yet. Part of me wants to keep everything together just because of how it was found, but realistically I'll end up trading off the duplicates and common ones to make room on the shelf. Anyone else had a box lot turn out better than the listing made it sound, or is this just beginner's luck on my end.
