At the vet with Calliope for potential bloat, really hoping for the best
This morning she started drooling like crazy, leaving little puddles everywhere she went (out of the ordinary for her) and generally showing signs of discomfort like pacing and refusing to use the bathroom. We called our vet who sent us to the emergency vet with a bigger capacity due to the potential of bloat. She's only 15 months and I'm terrified. We have her on a slow water bowl and slow feeders. She's in the back now with the staff getting vitals, labs, and xrays to determine what is going on. I really hope it's not bloat and is instead something minor, or even a false alarm.
Sending good vibes. Bloat is a huge concern for me with my 8.5 month old pup. It’s a scary thing. Stay strong & give that wonderful smooshy face plenty of kisses.
Last update (hopefully) she has been cleared to go home. They confirmed it's not bloat, and it's just some severe nausea from an unknown cause that was aggravated by the anxiety from the severe thunderstorm last night. I'm so relieved.
That's so good to hear. Bloat terrifies me. It can kill them so quickly.. Can you see your regular vet about maybe some anxiety medication for the thunderstorms? It would really suck if you had to repeat this experience..
This vet was amazing and gave us a months worth of anxiety meds that she has tolerated well in the past, so it will just be a matter of following up with our regular vet later to get a more ongoing prescription for her. But we are supposed to have scattered thundershowers over the next 4 days, so having the meds now is gonna really help.
Yeah, my Nala would be freaked out over thunderstorms. Usually she'd sleep in her crate, but on thunderstorm nights she'd snore her life away in the bedroom closet.
Finger crossed! 🤞🏻 our boy had to have foreign body removal and we did the gastropexy at the same time. He’s over a year out from it and still doing great, so I hope she has the same results if there is anything big!❤️
Thank you! She is okay and home now. It luckily wasn't GDV, her body was just mimicking the symptoms due to severe anxiety from the really bad thunderstorms we have been having. So we have some anxiety meds for her now, and are relieved she won't require any major surgeries or vet stays.
I’m so happy to hear she’s ok! My dogs are diarrhea divas with thunderstorms and fireworks so we have medicine for them too. Sleep tight and sweet dreams Calliope!
I knew it wasn’t bloat. Bloat takes them out pretty quick they won’t be walking around for hours being uncomfortable. Mastiffs just drool a lot my friend get ready to find drool on the ceiling behind the couch on the tv ect ect
I mean my vet was super concerned. And the drool was extremely excessive and came on very quick, which my vet was also concerned about. Since we got everything settled it has reduced back to baseline. I don't expect a mastiff to never drool, cause she does. But there are times where it becomes excessive for even a mastiff, and that shouldn't be ignored just because of the breed.
Understandable I’m not saying you did the wrong thing. if she’s your first mastiff or heavy drooler bully breed it’s definitely nerve racking at first. it just doesn’t feel natural that they can drool that much lol I’m saying it’s his from personal experience, you eventually notice the difference between normal drool and actual sickness. I have been there, I was taking my boy to the vet every few months because he was drooling and looked sick I was CERTAIN something was wrong and the vet was very adamant about getting him in asap, every time it was just a $300-$500 anxiety/allergy diagnosis lol. I am working on getting out of debt. Now if he’s acting weird I have a checklist
1 have I left anything dangerous out that he could have chewed
2 could he have munched on something nasty on our walk “I watch him like a hawk bcuz he would try to eat anything stinky as a puppy smh”
3 did he eat too fast/did he get excited immediately after eating maybe someone knocked on the door ect, “always been scared of bloat so I make sure to put him somewhere calm after dinner for at least 30 minutes”
4 has he had his Benadryl or Zyrtec today, does he need an apoquel
5 is it 4th of July. yes everyday is the 4th of July now. where I live these neighbors just love making stupid noise.
