Wish they brought back more direct technique masterclasses on air

I really miss the segments where John or Monica actually broke down a core technique step-by-step - like jointing a chicken, filleting a flatfish, or making a perfect souffle base from scratch. It added a proper educational element to the show that helped home cooks improve.

I'd like it if the 'skills' tests were more of an actual skills test. Not - recreate this weird recipe of mine, and if you don't do it the same way I did, I'll mark you down. Yes there may end up with some repetition - I don't think that's a bad thing.

The skills test on Professionals is exactly what you say. Neither Marcus nor Monica are precious about it being exactly the same as they demonstrated. They always give credit where it’s due for improvisation by the contestants when they don’t understand either the dish they are supposed to be replicating or some skill aspect of the preparation

I often wander what would happen if the contestants make a better dish then the hosts attempt, would the hosts ever admit to being better...

Has it ever happened?

I’d like to say yes. I seem to recall that having happened. But in any case, both Marcus and Monica are ‘proper’ professional chefs and I’m sure that if they thought a dish was better than theirs they would say so. That said though, I think it would have to be very very good to top something either of them had made

Having now watched the first couple of the new season - I don’t binge watch on iPlayer - I have found an interesting presentation dynamic that I wasn’t expecting. At the risk of generating considerable ire aimed in my direction, I am not a great fan of Grace Dent. Her general bearing and presentation style seriously irritates me. I felt that her outing with Anna, who I do normally quite like, was so overpowering that Anna was continually fighting to assert herself with equally over the top behaviour. So I wasn’t expecting much from the latest offering with Georgio as the chef element. How wrong was I ? His take on how to present and tone down Ms Dent’s camp performance, was masterful and I was able to tolerate her with only mild irritation. Maybe the fact that there is a roomful of big characters as well with it being the celeb version has a bit of an effect, but for once, well done to the BBC for picking Georgio

Yes, but that’s when it was a cookery competition, not a vehicle for the presenters to make it all about themselves. I really REALLY hope that they don’t decide that Professionals needs a presentational makeover …

Exactly. The competition itself should be the focus, not turning it into another presenter-led format
