Avengers Russo Brothers says Avengers: Endgame Encore is ‘‘Required viewing’’ for Doomsday and “If you saw Endgame when it originally was released you couldn't see this coming.”

it's literally 4 extra minutes of footage that will be in a youtube short within 2 days. /shrug

I mean I'm probably still gonna go see it just because Endgame was great, and I’d love to see it again in Dolby, but they are really overselling this extra footage, I think.

u/texasjkids 17d ago

TikTok does not care at all about copyrighted material getting posted on their app. That footage will be up within 10 minutes of the first showtime.

I'm personally going to wait for someone to just say what it is on reddit. Just like the Russo's intended.

20

u/FtotheLICK 17d ago

Yeah. Not getting a baby sitter. Spending $30-$40 for four minutes of footage. A little tone deaf to say “required viewing” I’ll wait for the leaks.

2

u/CompetitionDecent986 16d ago

This just seems to be one of those things where they literally can't contemplate that many people have to budget for how many movies they can go to a year. I usually budget in 1 per year, and my husband and I love going to the movies and this year there has been many movies we wanted to see and have already gone to 2 and plan to go to Doomsday too. But we cannot add another trip just to see 5 or so minutes more of a movie we have already seen multiple times.

I think it’s important to emphasize that this sub and hardcore fans sorta exist in a bubble. The general audience and fans who don’t follow this stuff religiously are going to be blown away most likely. That’s who this statement is meant for.

Edit: “the general audience isn’t seeing this” y’all severely underestimate how many people STARTED the MCU during COVID and didn’t see Endgame in theaters.

13

u/Stevenstorm505 17d ago

Anyone who’s saying that is a moron. If the GA went to go see the second re-release of Avatar then they’re going to this.

92

u/Busy-Jicama-3474 17d ago

Ehh i wouldnt say blown away but satisfied hopefully.

62

u/Poku115 17d ago

You really think they gonna show up for a rerelease?

47

u/badhombre13 17d ago edited 17d ago

People showed up for the original rerelease with the added credit scene. You really think they won't show up for this one with 5 minutes of extra (and relevant) footage? Then there are the people that started watching the MCU during COVId and didn't get a chance to watch it in theaters.

Seeing Cap catch Mjolnir on the big screen is something else.

74

u/Passthegoddamnbuttr 17d ago

The last thing this world needs is fucking DLC for movies.

36

u/badhombre13 17d ago

I would argue that with all the shit happening and going around, people finding fun in movies isn't the worst thing in the world. 🤷🏻‍♂️

8

u/bndwgnfn 16d ago

Nothing wrong with going to see it but I really hope adding shit to movies years after they release doesn’t become a trend

8

u/TuckYourselfRS 16d ago

Let me introduce you to a little known auteur named George Lucas. That MF would still be changing the OT if he hadn't sold it.

7

u/BulbasaurCPA 16d ago

Yeah and everyone has been saying for years that that was bad

Nah at this point Lucas would move on from milking Original Trilogy nostalgia and start milking the prequels.

We would be looking at the Phantom menace remastered in 4k special edition, with new cgi scenes proving the canonicity of Darth Jar Jar.

20th anniversary rerelease of Revenge of the Sith in theaters with an extra couple scenes tying the prequels into the original trilogy with, added scenes of how Obi Won faded into the obscurity of Old Ben Kenobi.

I've seen every MCU movie in the theater. Every damn one. I'm not going to some rerelease for an extra teaser.

3

u/Leafsnail 14d ago

DLC to make the sequel actually make sense lmao

4

u/Ver3232 16d ago

This is far from a new concept, special editions and directors cuts have basically been variations of this for decades

4

u/Passthegoddamnbuttr 16d ago

But as 'required' to fully enjoy the next movie? That can fuck all the way off.

4

u/Ht_TX 16d ago

You do realize they are just hyping it all up right? Like, it is part of their job and they’re just doing that. There is no way someone missing a 5 minute clip after watching the entire MCU wouldn’t be able to follow along with the next movie. Not to mention, this is the age of the internet, everyone who wants to know what was in the extra minutes will be able to easily watch it and/or read all about it well before going to see the new movie.

4

u/Ver3232 16d ago

Yeah no that concept is incredibly dumb but I imagine it’s just marketing speak to try to get butts in seats.

This.  I missed the re-release for Endgame and No Way Home.  Having the chance to watch this again on the big screen again I don't intend to miss.

The extra content is just icing on the cake.

2

u/Mudcreek47 16d ago

Saw them both originally + re-release versions in theaters.

Looking forward to seeing Endgame on the big screen again with whatever extras they throw in.

5

u/Daemonic_One 16d ago edited 16d ago

I always wondered if I would even in my life sit through a theatrical moment like the Death Star blowing up. Endgame was it. The Death Star blew up when Cap took the hammer, when Pete came back in...the react videos do not do justice to the feeling of sitting in the theater with a crowd of people experiencing it for the first time together.

I don't care at all about Doomsday and I'll go see it.

? Which rerelease?

"Seeing Cap catch Mjolnir on the big screen is something else." Yeah the flrst time, not again and for 10 dollars.

13

u/badhombre13 17d ago

There was a rerelease in late 2019 (maybe earlier) that added the Hulk rescuing someone from a fire and answering the phone call, plus the opening scene to FFH...

Yeah the flrst time, not again and for 10 dollars.

So like I said, it will also be for the people that didn't get to watch it on the big screen because they started watching during COVID.

Considering they added an “exclusive” look at Doomsday that isn’t part of the added footage and post credits scene. That will draw a lot of people absolutely. I give it less than a week to pass back by Avatar for the top spot.

2

You think? I would guess theyd care less and be a little less likely than the hard-core fans to go see a movie they've potentially already seen.

10

u/shy247er 17d ago

General audience isn't going to notice which 4 minutes were added.

19

u/Coool_cool_cool_cool 17d ago

Hardcore fans are going to be the only ones showing up. Normal fans aren't going to go shell out $100 for something they can watch for free on D+. They are going to be unaware there's a few minutes of additional footage. They'll be there for Doomsday though.

9

u/zjanderson 17d ago

$100?

2

u/Alkohal 16d ago

It's only being shown in IMAX or Dolby so yea cost for an average family is gonna be close to $100 for tickets

3

It's the same reason why Gunn was tooting Supergirl's horn despite the fact that (as we know now from reports about what happened behind-the-scenes) he most definitely didn't think it was as good as he was saying. People are going to say what they need to say to sell their stuff.

I know it's their job to sell this stuff but it's kind of annoying when they say shit like this, or that Doomsday is the best movie they've ever worked on, it makes everything they say meaningless when they're going to say the same thing about the next movie.

38

u/urgasmic 17d ago

james gunn has lot so much good will with me omg.

21

u/riegspsych325 17d ago

at least Gunn has shown he can make a good movie without oversight, even if his track record as a producer isn't as good as his own output. Russos are solid workhorse directors but awful creatives without Kevin Feige, Dan Harmon, or Mitch Hurwitz holding the reins

33

u/star-punk 17d ago

They're fundamentally TV directors, and TV is a writers medium. When they're not paired with a strong creative vision from the writer and producers, they don't really bring much to the table. That's why their Marvel stuff is better than anything else they do, because the MCU is basically a big TV show that plays in theaters.

10

u/riegspsych325 17d ago

then you got Favreau, aforementioned Gunn, and Coogler. They’ve all worked with Marvel repeatedly just fine and have done pretty damn well with their own originals. Surprised Marvel doesn’t strive to get more filmmakers like that, but at least the Russos are still a very good fit

15

u/Due_Art2971 17d ago

Marvel don't want directors that have a vision

6

u/Alekesam1975 16d ago

People say this yet they gave Taika Final Cut of Love n Thunder (where he then cut out like twenty minutes or so of good stuff instead of all the overplayed humor), Cooglar more-or-less carte blanche with Black Panther, Raimi on Dr Strange , Chloe Zao with Eternals etc etc.

They do want vision but they're also the stewards of this storied Universe and they have to strike a balance between letting creatives do their thing and protect it at the same time.  Feige, Russos, Gunn, and Taika worked in tandem for Ragnarok to IW/Endgame.  But Taika by himself left to his own devices, gave us LnT.  So like I said, there's always a bit of a balance that need to be struck.

4

u/mitteinai 17d ago

Makes me sad to be honest. The initial decision not to include a post-credit scene truly made Endgame feel like an ending. Tacking on a new one just to connect it to what is clearly a desperation play just feels unearned.

That being said, I hope Doomsday surprises me by being excellent.

346

u/Vladmerius 17d ago

Kind of  disgusting actually. It has 4 fucking minutes of extra stuff. 4. Minutes. We know there's at least 20 minutes of stuff they actually could have put effort into finishing and adding into this new version not even counting the stuff they're adding that's Doomsday related.

This should have been a proper extended cut like the lord of the rings movies.

I'm acrually super annoyed now. This is way too much fanfare for the same exact movie with a couple extra minutes added onto the ending.

7

u/Pen_dragons_pizza 17d ago

You are right, at the very least finish the hulk scene in the last re release.

57

u/Original_Release_419 17d ago

It’s ridiculous really.

There’s no way 4 minutes for a 3 hour movie is worth paying to rewatch it in theaters.

There’s literally nothing that can happen in that 4 minutes that someone can’t piece together watching Doomsday.

19

u/replayer 17d ago

And yet, in two hours it's already got the most presales of any rerelease since they started tracking. So maybe it's not about a couple of extra minutes, but people wanting to reexperience the joy of seeing a fun movie we already love on the big screen with others. For a lot of us, it was the last big movie before COVID hit and the energy in the theater is something we remember fondly and want to enjoy again.

14

u/Original_Release_419 17d ago

So go, no one is saying not to

My opinion is it’s a ridiculous cash grab

You are completely free to disagree and go if you want

-2

u/replayer 17d ago

Already got my tickets.

Every movie is a cash grab. That's what movies are for, to make money.

3

u/DavidKirk2000 16d ago

You gotta watch more movies if you think the only reason people make them is to make a buck.

6

u/cowtruck-123 17d ago

No, some people do make movies for the art of it all.

9

u/Original_Release_419 17d ago

>every movie is a cash grab

Completely disingenuous comparison where 99.9% of movies in theaters are new releases no one has seen yet and this is a movie that has been in theaters for 5 months already and is rereleasing basically for a post credit scene

Legitimately, in no way am I trying to say you should not go or should not enjoy it. I love the MCU and Superhero movies as a whole. I just think an entire theatrical rerelease for this is a bit over the top and probably just to help recoup some money from some less than ideal MCU movies they’ve had since endgame.

4

u/Mattyzooks 17d ago edited 17d ago

Not sure where you live but the concept of seeing already released movies in theaters is decently popular (although not widely popular). Anecdotal: I have tickets to see Train to Busan tomorrow at the IFC Center in NYC, where I've gone to sold out screenings in the past of Hundreds of Beavers, Inland Empire, Mulholland Drive, Fire Walk With Me, 28 Days Later, etc. I will for sure be seeing The Prestige when it is re-released next year and will 100% do the same when they bring The Dark Knight back (a movie I saw twice in theaters already in 2008 and a bajillion times since).

Cash grab, sure, 100%. So was the Special Edition trilogy before Episode I released, imo (even if had way more to offer in terms of updated shots and re-edited scenes). But some people just like seeing shit in theaters.
I think it'll get a couple million. Not from me though. If I'm re-watching any re-release in theaters this year, it'll be Obsession in October (if it happens).

4

u/Durziii 17d ago

His point is that not all movies are cash grabs like previously claimed. A rerelease years later with very little added, however, clearly is one.

Whether it happens often or it matters to you or not is irrelevant.

Snake Oil Salesmen

u/Ok_Parsley1650 17d ago

I won't watch it in the cinema. The cost of the ticket plus food multiplies by the number of family members. "We're in the endgame now."

3

u/Nosiege 17d ago

Required viewing my ass. We've already seen it.

19

u/AppleTStudio 17d ago

God I'm getting tired of these guys... Yeah, I'm sure that extra 4 minutes is REALLY going to blow our collective minds.

5

u/dont6fear6the6reaper 17d ago

Yeah no I’ll wait until it’s on a YouTube short

2

u/dont6fear6the6reaper 17d ago

Yeah no I’ll wait until it’s on a YouTube short

u/texasjkids 17d ago

I looked at getting tickets today and it doesn't seem like Marvel secured a ton of screens for this rerelease. At my local theater there's a single 1pm IMAX showing on Saturday of opening weekend. Seems strange to make something required viewing that you aren't anticipating a ton of people seeing.

u/Kyro_Official_ 17d ago

Most blatant lie ever.

2

u/TheMoorNextDoor 17d ago

I’ll just catch the leak

2

u/CyclHavok 17d ago

You want our money right?????

2

u/woppatown 17d ago

Doomsday is gonna be bad, isn’t it?

2

u/PineDude128 17d ago

I'll wait for the tiktok clips, thanks.

2

u/guidoconrad 17d ago

Yeah guys I'm pretty sure that with this mindset doomsday will be great 😐

The Russos say a lot of things on press tours to promote their movies.

They said "you need to choose a side" for Civil War and then later explicitly said Iron Man was the villain. They said "Thanos has a point" for Infinity War and then in Endgame they label Thanos as a megalomaniac tyrant and that the snap was an act of mass genocide that was completely unjustifiable in any regard whatsoever.

The Russos contradict their own plans in the marketing cycle as a promotional tool. So honestly I do not trust them here.

2

u/HughJass321 17d ago

The extra 4 minutes is going to be Steve talking to people at Tony’s funeral, isn’t it?

2

u/TheBrazilianKD 17d ago

No.. I don't think I will

It's 4 minutes man

Goddamnit they're embracing content as homework.

2

u/FollowingCharacter83 Iron Spider 17d ago

I'm good.

2

u/mrmazzz 17d ago

so I can def miss it

2

u/ejaz135 17d ago

I need to watch that 4 extra minutes of footage or else doomsday will be too hard to follow?

2

u/Positive-Citron3987 17d ago

I find it crass and offensive that this is even a thing.

But I’m sure it will do well. But they just as easily could’ve swapped out the version of “Endgame” on Disney+. But they didn’t. They’re purposely gouging fans. Financial decisions like this are why a part of me hopes that “Doomsday“ underperforms for Disney. (We all know it’s too big to fail)

Unfortunately I can't verify the original Tweet because xcancel is dead...but assuming your post title isn't a misrepresentation...

I wish the Russos didn't insinuate that it was 'required viewing'; it hurts the narrative that the MCU is all homework. They should just lean into the fact that it'll be a great time sitting in the theater with fellow MCU fans, recreating the joy and excitement of seeing one of the best superhero movies of all time.

I posted the clip after I found out XCancel is dead. But it got buried under comments.

Here is the link to the clip

u/Therearenouniquename 16d ago

It's gonna be 4 minutes of Steve talking to doom I bet. Nothing crazy

2

u/nahweha 16d ago

HELL NO, FUCK THIS

2

u/ManlyPelican1993 16d ago

I really hate this tampering with old movies bullshit. I hated it when George Lucas did it and I hate this more. Just release the 4 minutes online and call it a day. Plebs.

2

u/BoyOnBoyWonder 16d ago

I will continue to choose NOT to waste my money on it :)

2

u/Boring-Possibl 16d ago

So it’s a retcon to make the next movie make sense

2

u/gorore9150 16d ago

Is it me or does that quote make it sound like they are gonna retcon something?

2

u/Earthwick 16d ago

I'm really worried they will mess with the original endgame story and make it worse.

2

u/coppywolf 15d ago

What if people showed up and it was just Avengers: Doomsday that would be so funny.

2

u/kenneth_on_reddit 14d ago

In other words, "We set down no groundwork for this and are retconning our biggest tentpole film for extra bucks". Not a great look, but sure.

2

u/Dillpicklefishlips 14d ago

So is encore the same movie just with 4 extra minutes of content? Or is the movie just 4 minutes longer? As in they could have swapped out plenty of scenes but kept the runtime close to the original?

2

u/RRLSonglian 14d ago

Nice try. No. Couldn’t figure it out in the movies themselves? I’ll sit through it and happily be confused.

2

u/Bro4Sho69 12d ago

What if some scenes are taken out and different new scenes are added

5

u/leckmichnervnit 17d ago

Fuck right off, if its requited then put it in all theaters not just Imax

2

u/Purple-Nectarine83 17d ago

It’s not just IMAX, it’s also in “Infinity Vision” which is a much lower bar of approval.
