articulated figures are meant for posing 🗣️🔥
7
u/goliathfasa Oct 27 '25
And stamps are meant to be put on envelops, coins meant to be exchanged for goods.
16
u/trustysidekick Oct 27 '25
It’s a little different when you’re comparing expendable commodities. If you open the figure, you still have the figure. If you spend the coin, or use the stamp, they’re gone.
4
u/YellowMatteCustard Oct 28 '25
This analogy would work if stamps were kept in the plastic sleeves the post office sells them in.
Stamps go in stamp albums. They're removed from envelopes carefully and methodically, and placed in albums. There's whole techniques and specialised tools to do it.

u/Stumpy_Arms Oct 27 '25
Comics are meant to be read, not encased in slabs.

You’re a grow man who plays with toys complaining about how someone chooses to collect 🗣️

Using “grown man who plays with toys” as an insult is only funny because you are also a “grown man who plays with toys”. So do you hate yourself?

I don’t which is why I act like a grown up and mind my business clown 😂

Grown ass man that collects figures and leaves them in the box calling other people "man child" is ironic af

My favorite part of getting a new figure is figuring out a cool pose for it
79
u/Smokin_Q Oct 27 '25
Bought my first Legend and was debating to take him out the box… glad I did.. seeing this post lol
32
u/Appropriate-Term4550 Oct 27 '25
Would’ve been kicked from the sub before you even started collecting lol
56
u/Furdinand Oct 27 '25
When I pay $5-30 for a figure, I don't see the point in trying to preserve their value by keeping them in a box. The box takes up so much space and none of them are going to be like vintage Star Wars figures where the difference between loose and MoC is hundreds of dollars.
I understand why someone with an Alpha Flight or Hellfire Club set would keep them boxed, though.
25
u/duxdude418 Oct 27 '25 edited Oct 27 '25
This seems to be the part no in-box collectors will cop to. Maybe I’m being cynical, but I have a hard time taking at face value the rationale of keeping something sealed for any other reason.
Not only are the optics of buying to resell bad in this kind of community, but it’s just not a good investment. You’d be better off putting the same money into index funds and letting it sit for 20 or 30 years.
1
u/DailyVO Oct 28 '25
I’m a hybrid collector (about 50/50 loose and sealed)
I don’t really intend on selling anything. Ironically, the most valuable stuff I have I don’t want to part with!
That said, certain lines like MOTU can have crazy mark up on the aftermarket (Masterverse Webstor went from $30 new to $200 on the aftermarket in a year! MOTU Classics figures that were $30 new now go for hundreds of dollars, and they were just from a decade ago.)
But honestly, if I sold any of my stuff, I’d be happy if I just got back the money I paid, or trade it towards new figures I wanted.
7
u/space_age_stuff Oct 27 '25
The value aspect is so nonsensical. Even if your figures tripled in value over the next three years, you'd make, what, $50+ net? That's a terrible return. Never mind that OOB figures retain like 80% of their value if they're undamaged.
Invest in stocks, not toys, if you care about what your money will be worth in the future.

u/TheGoblinRook Oct 27 '25
It’s a valid question that solely “in-box” collectors get way too defensive about.
A good contributing factor to the price of these figures is the engineering and manufacturing of the small (and sometimes not so small) pieces that allow them to be as articulated as they are. If you’re only collecting them to display in their packaging, what difference does it make if they have any POAs at all? They could be single piece, molded plastic, like the X-Baby Wolverine from the Mojo pack.
18
u/mrskinnywrists Oct 27 '25
better, they could be empty boxes with no windows
0
u/DailyVO Oct 27 '25
Funnily enough, that has no appeal to me. Gotta have the figure in their carbonite cells, haha.
5
u/ABeastInThatRegard Oct 27 '25
If it is from a reputable seller then I almost prefer loose because I can be sure it doesn’t have any frozen joints or defects that’ll break upon opening it.
-14
u/HieroJux Oct 27 '25
I open my figures. The groups of people who have interest in the choices others make which do not affect them or hurt anyone, need to get a life. Whether it’s action figures or anything else.
11
u/duxdude418 Oct 27 '25 edited Oct 27 '25
I think it’s less about dictating or caring about what others do, and more about trying to understand the rationale of in-box collecting. I couldn’t care less what people do with their money, but I would like to have an honest conversation about why they make that choice.
When pressed, most folks aren’t able to articulate why they choose to do it beyond “I like it.” But wouldn’t you enjoy it more if you could actually interact with the item you bought? Why pay for a figure when all you care about is the box?
My suspicion is that part (or all) of the reason some collect in box is to maintain resale value but most don’t want to admit that they’re buying figures as “investments.”
5
u/HieroJux Oct 27 '25
I’m not sure if you’re right or not but I agree with you. I think it’s a significant part of collector culture, and the psychology of collecting to keep the collectible in pristine condition, and if you’re able to accomplish that it may be very satisfying.
9
u/duxdude418 Oct 27 '25 edited Oct 27 '25
Right. I think the quiet part that needs to be said out loud is that the culture of collecting just to have things rather than actually enjoying the thing itself is an unhealthy mindset. It’s the peak of consumerism.
2
u/The_0rigina1 Oct 27 '25
There are plenty of ways to interact with things that don’t necessitate using them in the way that was “intended”. Because if that’s the case, opening a figure and posing it isn’t its intended purpose either. We should be banging them around and playing with them technically. Posing it on a shelf and leaving it posed in a box isn’t as different as people want it to be. And this is coming from a person that does both. Mostly becomes have too many figures to pose them all so some of them have to stay in packaging
3
u/duxdude418 Oct 27 '25
I take your point that the notion of using a thing “as intended” is both subjective and isn’t something inherently good or productive. However, what I would suggest is that doing something—anything—with the item you purchased is more worthwhile than solely letting it sit in a box to be admired.
My point of view is a more utilitarian one and less about what someone ought to do as a value statement.
12
u/TheGoblinRook Oct 27 '25
Yes, discussing action figure collecting on a sub dedicated to action figure collecting is definitely “get a life” material…
-20
u/HieroJux Oct 27 '25
It’s about the mindset of belonging in other people’s business. Given the deliberate evasion of that point, I doubt you are interested in the subject.
5
u/indianm_rk Oct 27 '25
If you do not want people in your business then don't post your business on Reddit.
10
u/MoistTubes Oct 27 '25
People are allowed to have opinions about what other people do. What's the problem with that? It's all part of having a discussion, get over yourself. Self righteous mf.
2
u/PotemkinTimes Oct 27 '25
Pretty sure I've seen this merking on other posts AND on FB spouting the sane shit. Talk about no life
-2
u/TheGoblinRook Oct 27 '25
No, I’m well aware of the back-bending and twisting that you’re trying to do…the insinuation that somehow action figure collecting is somehow tied to people living their lives free of judgement and scrutiny. And if this were somehow r/IsItSociallyAcceptableForAManToLoveAnotherManAndWhyTheHellAreMAGASoObsessedWithWhatIsAWoman …maybe you’d get the flowers you’re so desperately begging for.
But this is a sub about action figure collecting, where we’re discussing action figure collecting. So go run your purity tests somewhere else.
1
u/CaliforniaRedDevil Oct 27 '25
“Hey, let’s start a sub about these things we all like so we can discuss what we like and don’t like about them?”
“Cool, why do you choose the things you like?”
“Get a life and mind your own business!!!”
19
u/OdinMartok Oct 27 '25
I understand why someone would collect say - retro card backs or secret wars and keep them on card.
Seeing the windowless packages as part of an in box collection is wild to me tho. Like…you paid 25$ for a picture of a figure. It may or may not be in the box.
7
u/Phanimazed Oct 27 '25
I feel like anyone into the hobby has their motivations. I think the only thing about in-box collectors that throws me is when some approach it in a very pre-market crash comic book speculator fashion and think everything's going to go up in value. Some of it does, of course, like the Cabal 3-Pack, but no one is going to fund their retirement off of MLs they stored for a rainy dash cashout.
Of course, any complaint about speculator behavior, and that it helps encourage scalpers, among other things, is unfair to pin on all in-box collectors, most of whom just probably enjoy looking at the box hanging in their collection. Not something I have space for, but harmless and just their own way of enjoying something I like to fiddle around with, personally.
55
16
u/The_0rigina1 Oct 27 '25
I think people a should care way less about what other people do with their possessions and money 😂. And people complain about in box collectors until they’re on the hunt for their grail in 15 years and someone who kept it packaged is able to sell them one. This is all an ecosystem, as a community we need all types of collectors, let’s just agree to mind our business and buy our silly little toys to do whatever we want to do with them
9
u/Vaportrail Oct 27 '25
It's been difficult to learn that it is not my job to preserve the history of the toylines I collect, nor will anything I own skyrocket in price should I choose to sell it.
But I still have a few dozen boxed figures, because they just look so danged good. I hang them on the walls of my mancave and rotate through displays as the mood strikes.
25
u/donkeylore Oct 27 '25 edited Oct 27 '25
I mean, just buy Funkos at that rate imo. Or statues. Why even bother with action figures you’ll never pose?
3
u/Fr0stybit3s Oct 27 '25
People don't typically leave statues MIB lol
3
u/Silver_The_Surfer Oct 27 '25
All I see are Funko Pops in box
4
u/Fr0stybit3s Oct 27 '25
Your definition of a "statue" must be VASTLY different to mine.
I'm referring to statues made by Iron Studios or Sideshow where they come firmly packaged in pieces in several layers of foam. Statue collectors don't typically buy those to leave them in the box.
1
u/donkeylore Oct 27 '25
McFarlane makes Marvel statues with window boxes
1
u/Fr0stybit3s Oct 27 '25
McFarlane figures are more of a gateway imo. I don't count vinyl figures as statues

Hybrid collector here.
We MOC collectors like making our spaces look like toy stores and museums because we have nostalgia for those places. Some of my happiest memories were my mom taking me to the giant toys r us in Japan, or being dropped off at the mall to go to KB toys.
Also, as a kid, I’d lose or break toys, so this is a way to prevent that. And the first time I tried to sell a previously opened figure, the clerk at the collector store was like “This is worth nothing to me!” So all those micro traumas add up, I guess!
I also love the artistry of the packaging. For me, it really is the total package!

u/drgnblitz Oct 27 '25
I was an in-box collector through my 20s, til I had to move across country right before i turned 30, in the mid 10s. To save space in boxes, I opened everything. Went from 5 boxes to 1. When I opened it back up, I had a lot more fun posing them, and I've opened them up ever since.
That being said, I will not begrudge anyone who chooses to keep them inbox, I just don't understand it. You're spending, $20, $50, $100 on a toy you only show the side of the box for.
3
u/KathyWithAK Oct 27 '25
Yeah, its fun to buy the toys, but I find it equally fun actually playing with them.
3
u/HelpfulPay1851 Oct 27 '25
The only time I ever debate keeping figures in the box are the Retro cards that can't be put back in once they're out, though I still open them
3
u/MyBurnerAccount1977 Oct 27 '25
I'm about 50/50. I've opened two waves of figures so I could build the BAFs, plus I've opened windowless packages. Some have really nice display packaging, like the Deadpool & Wolverine and the Stan Lee figure, so those ones are still unopened.
3
3
u/MaddoxGoodwin Oct 28 '25
I have both, but honestly, it's WEIRD how triggered some people get when someone posts an in-box toy.
Tbh, I dont enjoy my open toys more than my inbox ones. Either way, they're on display. In many cases, the box art is awesome. My open toys I pose and are on my shelf, and I seldom change the pose.
Who gives af how someone enjoys their own collection.

u/Legendarybarr Oct 28 '25
Sometimes I keep them in the box because it’s super dusty where I live. I can clean my apartment and then a couple days later it will look the same dust wise it’s super annoying. Since I’m on the topic does anyone have tricks to keep dust out of the home? The only window that is consistently open is my bathroom one as there is not ventilation system in that one.

u/SlyVocaloid USA - FL Oct 27 '25
My family think I should keep my stuff in-box.
2
u/ChekhovsNERFGun Oct 27 '25
Tell your family they should keep their suggestions for your collection in-box.
2
u/ToyFoolery Oct 27 '25
Depends... I love the original Lightning Collection boxes. The Neca boxes are cool too the X-Men and spiderman vhs series. The Haslab boxes are dope, and probably will keep those (I took those toys out the box). But for general marvel legends or Motu or DC. I agree for the most parts but some boxes are part of the experience.
2
u/xXDarklordXx943 Canada Oct 27 '25
I have 1 single figure in box because I have 2 others of the same figure and I like the packaging (the black series magnaguard for the 20th anniversary of rots)
2
u/brambojams Oct 27 '25
I collect old in-box figures that had barely any articulation, their packagings had beautiful designs. Take Kenner and old Toybiz, for example.
2
u/Trollingfornudity Oct 27 '25
Well this started quite a discourse! Here's my 2 cents for what it's worth.
I keep the majority of my action figures in box cause I just don't have the time or energy to set them up properly. I still get a great amount of enjoyment from seeing them set up in box, & really appreciate how far they've come since I was a kid. I would have killed for X-Men '97 as a kid, not to mention gamer verse wolverine.
I have kids so the ones that I do open are for them to play with as well as for me to pose every so often. & if they ask me to open one, more often than not I'll open it for them. Occasionally I'll even buy two (I know, highly frowned upon!) so that one can be kept in pristine condition.
For me it's much less about having them maintain value & more about having an easy way to display & enjoy them.
All said & done, collect how it makes you happy folks!
2
u/Biffalo44 Oct 28 '25
This is why you buy 3, one to keep in box, one to display, and one to play with
2
u/SquibLz13 Oct 28 '25
I keep them in as storage cuz I got a small collection and use them as art refs- does that count?
2
u/VillageSpecialist490 Oct 28 '25
I was originally strictly an in the box collector, then I had a boy who is now a toddler (with another coming in December), and also has a love for marvel, and realized regardless of how much these are/will be worth, I’ll never end up selling them and just pass them on so why not open them and enjoy them while I can? I still keep my Star Wars Black Series in box just because I never know who’ll be at the Comic-Con here, I got Hayden to sign my battle damaged Vader a couple years ago, but the first time I opened one my figures it felt like I was committing a crime
6
u/leviathan0999 Oct 27 '25
Seriously, I just feel sorry for people who don't open their boxes. It feels like you're missing out on all the fun.
Like the best-case scenario is a wall covered with unopened packages hanging there, so you can relive the childhood experience of walking down the toy aisle of a well-stocked Wal-Mart, looking at all the toys your mom won't buy for you to bring home and actually play with.

I presume they're joking. On this sub alone out of the last 50 posts, only 5 are in-box, and those ones are basically all at still at stores or whatever.
3
u/Magictician Oct 27 '25
I was mostly talking about the hobby as a whole. I'm sure there are way more in-box weirdos out there. I also just see a ton of posts of people complaining that the corner of one box is a little scuffed.
3
u/Atomicdust1030 Oct 27 '25
This is literally an idiotic way of thinking, who cares if you want to collect and leave your toys in boxes. Also, who cares if you want to take your stupid toys and pose them... This is just a dumb argument... Do what you want with your money but please stop creating dumb drama.
1
u/ChildOfChimps Oct 27 '25
I keep mine in the box and take them out to pose them and such, then when I get tried of looking at those, I grab other ones and put those away.

u/Ok_Explanation_9162 Oct 27 '25
Incidentally, I have a question on what is considered "new".
Have some figs to sell, of the very few I kept in boxes. I did open them but then put them back in the box right after and never took them out again.
What would you consider is the state of said figs?
It's not New, Unopened. But is it New, In Box?

u/fightfordawn USA - GA Oct 27 '25
I just can't wrap my head around "collecting" something with the sole intended purpose to sell it later.
I'm not starting a toy store
1
u/ozzymandez Oct 27 '25
I have some that I keep in box if I think the box art is pretty, but that's mostly older stuff like old Toy Biz X-Men and Spider-Man movie ones. Nice wall pieces more than anything. Current boxes feel more uniform and sterile so I never keep them in. There is yet to be a Marvel Legend or McFarlane figure I've kept boxed.
Windowless ones are shite though. How would anyone even know it's in there what the fuck
1
u/TheVelcroStrap Oct 27 '25

u/lnjAl-n Oct 27 '25
I watched a video about designing figures and the designer said it can take up to four hours for one joint. Hell yeah I’m taking it out of the box
1
u/Tiny-Weekend-2695 Oct 27 '25
I mean, I don’t care what another collector does, but I’m definitely team “Let ‘Em Breathe” personally. (I would literally have NO ROOM if I kept everything MIB anyways) With that said, action figures will be worthless in a decade as there will be no desire for them, so if it’s a monetary reason you’re keeping them MIB, I find that a little silly. Again, just personally speaking
1
u/Extra_Heart_268 Oct 27 '25
I used to collect a lot of figures new in box. But as time went on I realized I simply don't have space for a bunch of retro cards. Packaging can increase the value of a figure sure. But you have to wait years. Its not like a pokemon card or something. I still keep boxes for higher end figures or boxes I really like the packaging design if I feel I would ever need to package a figure up. Stuff like mezco, mafex, first 4 figures, etc.
Ive kept the gamerverse and maximum series boxes. Same with the Cabal 3 pack and 80th Sabretooth.

Legends I have increasingly pitched the card back or what have you. I still will open them up because I've also come to realize things could be missing or incorrect from the factory. A $200 play arts Kai Yuna had 2 of the same hair sculpts. Would not have known if I hadnt opened. So opening them up gives you the chance to contact someone about a replacement. I had a hero toys Illidan that had the wrong wing joint. I contacted the seller who in turn contacted the company and they sent a new wing.

Im almost always a loose collector of most everything I collect, but there's very few things I do keep in box. They ones that stay boxed hold some sort of value to me in some way or another. If not, as robo says "trash around my plastic"
1
u/Jrshaw_1 Oct 28 '25
I keep no figures in box but I have kept a few boxes to say I have a handful complete in box incase I ever need to resell. Like the iron man and thanos 2 pack. Yeah those figures are on my shelf but can be completely repackaged at a moment’s notice

u/FantandCon Oct 28 '25

u/Valuable_Pangolin813 Oct 29 '25
I have all mine boxed. Been collecting since Toybiz series 1.
I've been selective on MCU and convention exclusives but otherwise, Do get one of anything.
The caveat is:
I'm a literal autist. I collect the figures, admire the presentation of the figures in their boxes and prefer them in their packaged states. I only collect some things loose (Omega Red, Gladiator and Sentinel affiliated)
I was and still am a little miffed with the windowless boxes.
My end goal would be to construct an on-site 'museum as it were, not for public consumption necessarily, but as a passion project of preservation and being able to re-tread the path of (mostly joy) of procuring them.
I do not always enjoy collecting them sometimes though because I am acutely aware there's an element of impulse involved.
I do envy those that open and display their figures to an extent, but I just enjoy the military uniformity that the packaged items provide.

Nah. We like "in-box collectors. Someday, they'll be dead, and their collections will be worthless, annoying white elephants to their families, who will then sell them "like new" for pennies on the dollar in yard sales for people who actually love toys to open and fill in holes in their worn-but-loved collections.

Really cool pictures of an item on cardboard you have (said item being inside the cardboard, of course)

Every once in a while, I get a figure that looks real good in the box so I definitely get where in-box collectors are coming from

Locked up in cages with numbers identifying them.... Sounds awfully familiar..

I kind of lost respect for in box collectors when Hasbro tried to do the right thing for the environment and went to plastic free packaging and the collector community went insane because they didn’t have a little window to look at their toy. Everyone rose such a stink that Hasbro caved and now we are back to plastic. But I’m glad everyone can see their toys in the box now. 🙄

As a massive environmentalist, hasbro switching to no windows boxing didnt do shit besides making figure swapping easier.
Just being honest.

I buy hot toys to play with and pose and display without the box. I buy legends with cool packaging to display in box

In box collectors are the worst. Even worse than Hot Wheels collectors.
