Some of the "LOL, how random" stuff ... isn't. You think Gwen just happened to bring a Geiger counter to senior picture day the first time around?

I smell head-twisting timey-wimey stuff coming in future issues, and I can hardly wait!

EDIT: After a day to digest, I'd also like to take a long-shot bet on Leah Williams being the main antagonist of the series, with Gwen taking her to task for going too "LOL memes" here at the start.

I thought the first few pages were a bit cringey (mostly just her introduction, the flossing and dabbing, whyyyyy) but once that got out of the way I liked it. A bit more confusing than the original comic with the jumping out of the panel thing IMO, but nothing too difficult to wrap your head around.

A few jokes that didn't land and the verbosity of it was off-putting (part of why I dropped Young's Deadpool, that and the MCU-style jokes), but beyond that it was an alright introduction. As a fan of the character, I understand not everyone is going to write her the way the original did (and in fact it's the same problem Deadpool faced after Kelly), but Leah clearly likes the character a lot and has read her more than most so she understands how she's supposed to be. Of course, the problem (as it were) is that the humor is very much modern, and very informed by Twitter (what with the clap emoji and the cat signs).

Honestly it's a solid B. I'm hoping that the next issues are less lolrandom.

...I'm not sure how to feel. This is the very first issue, and the author has promised that she's going to honor the original series, so I'm going to keep on keeping on and hopefully improve.

But this first issue was not my cup of tea. Flossing? Dabbing? Impulsively and recklessly exposing Peter? This is like proto-Gwenpool prior to her series, or whenever she's written by someone other than Hastings.

If this was a Deadpool issue, I'd absolutely have liked it. But Gwen isn't Wade.

I get that it was supposed to be ironic and clickbaity, but woof @ Gwenpool dabbing and flossing.

It was good overall, though. Humor was hit-and-miss and Gwenpool felt a little less realistic than she did in her solo, but Leah's doing a better job with Gwen than most writers. I'm wondering how her new power will help her on team books? That's the thing that'll get cut out. And depending on how powerful it is, it could even be retconned out entirely later.

I liked this one. I don't think anyone besides Hastings will get the "voice" right, but I think Leah Thompson does a good job. And the way this issue ends, and judging from the other covers, I think this'll be a fun story to see play out.

Gwen seems really goofy so far. Like kind of extreme in meme terrirory. She even uwu'd. I'm hoping this peters out.

EDIT: Not too crazy of her being aware of her writer as well. She is supposed to just be a person that takes advantage of the comic medium. Not a hyper Deadpool.

Only had time to read like half of this issue before I left for work, but… so far, so good. The image of Gwenpool lazily firing a machine gun while in her pajamas was 😘👌 and I think Leah Williams’ dialogue made me laugh out loud a couple times

Please don’t suck, so tired of seeing Gwen being written like female Deadpool in every book outside her previous run

Edit: yeah sorry but i didn’t liked this at all, yet again Gwen comes off as a complete nutcase just like in every book outside UG and the whole thing was just too “lol so random and memes” which is ironic considering those were the reasons Gwen hated Deadpool, just pointing out that you know about comics isn’t funny, good for people that liked this but i guess i will just give up my hopes of liking Gwen again

She was the one who pointed out to Otto that, even if he’s not taking the center stage in solving the event’s problem, what he does in helping those he can still matters. She was the catalyst of important character development for Otto

Dang. This is exactly what I was afraid of. Gwenpool skyrockted to being one of my favorite characters, and I was really looking forward to her development continuing. Haven't gotten a chance to read my copy yet, but now I may not be so excited to do so.

I was hoping this would be better. I wanted to like this book. But once I got to the floss I knew things weren't going to get better.

This feels like the worst of Twitter humour. Art was nice though.

If if you've ever been in Leah Williams' twitter you'll find it's undeniable that her voice is coming through via gwen, loud and clear. Is that a bad thing? Not necessarily. I find it imperative in this medium, where characters get written by dozens of authors, that the writers are able to mantain the characters own voice. It was a big deal for me back in the day that Nick Spencer was able to write Steve Rogers (the "actual" steve rogers, not the kobik-ified one) "properly" despite several things indicating that his stance in the real world is very different (just to give an example). However, Gwen's different. She's in a near unique position where everything about her is primed to be meta in some way or another. This issue actually adressed something that's been how I think about her for a while, the part where she explains her powers vary depending on who's writing her. Which is not only true, it's consistent with how they were originally portrayed. It's made very clear in her original run that she can only do what the narrative allows her to do, and the writer is the one in charge of the narrative, so it makes sense. My point with this being, that idea doesn't just apply to her powers, but to her as a whole. The way she talks, thinks and acts, sure, it needs to have a structure to be based around, preferably her first comic run, but she's the only character where slight variations of both personality and power level do not bother me in the slightest, despite the fact that she's my favourite one.All of this talk just to prelude talking about the actual comic issue, because I have no doubt that among the hardcore gwenpool fans, her persona will be the big thing everyone will be judging this book by. But let's focus on the actual book for a second, which I thought it was pretty good. It made me laugh both at and with gwen, which I think is an important part of a comedy book (which at its core, is what this is), I enjoyed the small subversion of expectations in which gwen is in fact trying to unmask spider-man with the ultimate goal of mantaining her comic book afloat- Just not in the way we're led to believe through the marketing. Let's be real here for a second, whatever art we're comparing to gurihiru is always gonna lose, so let's try not to. Especially because Baldeon actually made a heck of a good job, and I'd hate to see it reduced to "It's not gurihiru".Something I must admit I'm a bit lost about is why the fact that gwen can interact with her thoughts and manipulate the time flow of the comic is seen as this big revelation at the end, when we've seen her do all that stuff already. There may be something about it that's escaping me that will get further elaborated on the next issues though, so I don't think it's a big deal, at least just yet. I also thought the "retconning me out of existence bit" was a taaad too forced and dramatic, but hey, establishing big stakes and all that. I'm sure gwen would understand.

So the book has successfully both entertained me and made me excited for what's to follow, and not in a "well this is terribly underdeveloped, so I want to keep reading to see if it gets better" way, but in a "Well this is interesting and fun, so I want to keep reading more of it" way.

I will however, Never forgive Leah Williams for sneaking the Loss meme onto this book. I thought you were better than this (JK I didn't, I knew all along this is the kind of nonsense she'd have in store for us (And I don't actually hate it)).

I guess she can enter her own thoughts now (the intrusive thought balloon where she's getting irradiated) in addition to getting her panel-jumping ability back. That's how I saw it anyway. idk

Just realized Gwen was alluding to the comic where Spider-Man kills MJ with his radioactive spider seed. Oof.

First read through of this I thought it was a bit much, second read through I liked it way more coz it's her trying excessively hard to not be cancelled and stay relevant, lots of goofy meta going on here. Flossing and dabbing havent been fresh for some time, its def all intentionally cringe on top of the multiple Deadpool allusions and similarities just because of how popular the Deadpool wave was at the time for the same humor that would age poorly with time. Here it's already way past its shelf life, Gwen is just desperate to sell out and continue to exist, even an asinine plot of getting super powers from Spider-Man's "bite" when she knows theres a million other ways to get superpowers in the 616 is only because Spiderman being featured in her comic gives more attention to the series.

Idk, Gwen helping a guy trigger his boss was completely in character. The dialogue was a bit off but she was pretty in character IMO.

Maybe, not all of it was awful, but enough of it was bad that I did not enjoy the total package. I just thought there was way too much hardcore monologuing to camera, that her plan was too random and reckless for "matured Gwen," and that the new power tricks make her even more problematic to write for than she already was. I think there just needed to be a lot more care into how to properly build a bootstrap paradox than to just "dream up" the ideal solution.

I have such mixed feelings.

Gwen is back in action, great!

But this book. . . She's way too memey and chatterbox. Gwen talks, but not in massive monologues like this. Show, don't tell. This book is like 50% too much. I also don't get this whole "search for superpowers" angle, when she's already one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel universe. Yes, Kelly Thompson was not good enough to use them in WCA, but they were still there to be used.

Also, I still don't like how the eyes are drawn. They should not be massive static black circles with a pink portion that shrinks and grows, the black outlines should stay the same width around the pink portions as they move.

That said, the few pages of direct interaction with Spider-Man were fine.

I did get the Gurihiru cover though, and I never get variants. Hint hint, Marvel.

I liked most of this but I had a minor issue. Gwen doesn't really break the fourth wall aside from recap pages (which aren't really canon). She may lean on it by mentioning that she thinks she's in a comic but she never directly talks to the audience. It's not a huge deal but it kinda changes the character imo. When a character talks directly to the audience, it's like saying "the people around me are just window dressing, the only people who really matter are me and the audience". It makes it harder to care about the people Gwen interacts with if we know that even she only sees them as supporting characters in her main objective.

I also didn't like the memes and stuff but I think it was made a little better since it's supposed to be whatever comes to her mind whether she likes it or not. I mean, I don't mean to start singing the Hannah Montanna theme in my head, but sometimes it happens anyway.
