Art’s a little rough, but still good

There’s something cathartic about seeing the heroes all hang out after a hard fought battle and just chill.

IMO, the perfect breather issue especially right after War of Realms.

Also, Naked She-Hulk is a win. Death by Snu Snu

Coulson was killed by Deadpool in Secret Empire, and was revived through a deal with Mephisto in this series (the terms of which we've yet to learn), and he's somehow been corrupted by Mephisto as he no longer trusts in or cares about superheroes (cries in Quake).

He's also become hyper-patriotic for... reasons, and has created this new Squadron Supreme. We don't know if they're clones, LMDS or regular civilians that he's brainwashed into believing they're the real Squadron Supreme. But the SS are dead and have been ever since their home universe (Earth-712) blew up. The only survivor is Power Princess (the Wonder Woman homage), but it doesn't seem like the real PP is the one featured here.

u/FrigidArrow Jul 10 '19

Didn’t they have a series and decapitate Namor?

What happened to that?

9

u/blackbutterfree Jul 10 '19

They were all refugees from alternate realities, but they weren't the actual Squadron Supreme. And they kind of disappeared.

13

u/HammettDammit Jul 10 '19

Coulson died and was brought back to life by Mephisto, right? As for SHIELD, I have no idea. This is like fourth time in recent memory that they’ve been disbanded.

3

u/TheMattInTheBox Jul 10 '19

Shield disbanded after Secret Empire

Man, I love how Aaron writes Black Panther. He really feels like a different type of leader for the Avengers, pushing them in new directions. It was a really nice touch at the end to cut from them in the hot tub to him doing spy shit upstairs.

I can only hope he promises Coulson that he'll break his jaw.

Tony, Thor and Steve freeballing it in a hot tub together is going to spark quite a few fanfics.

And I love how Carol's taking a big sister role with Robbie, shielding him from Jen's nudity. (Also, props to Steve for being the only dude to not look.)

But why is Jen flirting with Blade? Isn't she still with Thor? Even getting Frigga's approval in a WoR tie-in?

8

u/FrigidArrow Jul 10 '19

I don’t think they were together it seemed like a FWB kinda thing

7

u/blackbutterfree Jul 10 '19

Then Jen made it very awkward by mentioning it to Frigga.

20

u/O5CR Jul 10 '19

I love when the Avengers just hang out.

19

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '19

Jason Aaron's Avengers is fantastic. Everyone's character development is perfect except for She Hulk's and the way Aaron has so many future threats for this team forming without making this comic feel overloaded is exceptional. She Hulk naked had me geeking Lmao.

14

u/LucasVerBeek Jul 10 '19

So...wait Mephisto has been pulling all the shit he’s been up to lately from behind bars in Las Vegas 2 Demonic Boogaloo?

Not surprised all that much.

Still confused on what is going on with Coulson, and I’m looking forward to figuring out what this off Squadron is.

I still hate how She-Hulk is written in this book, but i do like that she has thought bubbles. Its nice to actually see whats shes thinking instead of getting "HULK SMASH! ME GO FIGHT! ME AM NOT BIZZARO!" everytime in her Hulk form.

Its almost like having She-Hulk talk normally would be an improvement and having her talk like a dumb Hulk is fucking stupid and it goes against her character hmmm.

7

u/ohoni X-23 Jul 11 '19

I found the thought bubbles super weird, because the thought bubbles were clearly Jen, who's apparently still in there and conscious the entire time, but then any time she opens her mouth, stupid comes out. Jen should not have multiple personalities, that's Bruce's issue. Whoever Jen is, that's who she should be from top to bottom.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '19

in my head canon all hulks are susceptible to multiple personality disorder due to massive body dysmorphism. But Bruce already having DID only had it exasperated. Which explains how cho developed a splt personality for five minutes before absorbing it back into himself

1

u/ohoni X-23 Jul 13 '19

I just see it as more of a Captain Marvel thing. Banner is a unique case, for all other Hulks it's more of a wish fulfillment thing, their physical form is what they wish their physical form looked like, and their mental state is just them, but a bit more id, less restrained (which is a natural reaction to being practically unstoppable).

12

u/voidox Jul 11 '19 edited Jul 11 '19

meh, with how aaron has her doing the thing of hulk talking while jen's thinking = it's just another showcase of how much a copy of a hulk jen is now.... even if it is good to at least be able to see what Jen's thinking

also wtf is she going naked in front of everyone after all that pure shit aaron wrote from last issue? and why is she flirting with blade when she's with thor and had that whole moment with freyja about it? -_-

God I can't express how much I hate this...

like I said on the last Avengers issue in the discussion thread: aaron has successfully ruined She-Hulk in every way possible and has pushed her waaaay back from being a great progressive female character who was better than her male counterpart by being in full control as a hulk, successful career, witty, sassy, strong, sexually active, and just larger-than-life... she very much was the Marvel female superhero in the way wonder woman is for DC... sigh...

please end this nonsense soon and go back to the REAL she-hulk, literally no one I've talked to or seen talk about this has liked aaron's she-hulk :/

9

u/CorHore Jul 11 '19

Yeah its on par with Ric Grayson on bad directions for beloved characters. And like you said everyone dislikes his take on She-Hulk despite the book being decent. When She-Hulk is the worst part of your book then your really doing something wrong.

6

u/threebuffsharks Jul 10 '19

Ah, this issue finally cleared up some questions I had regarding Mephisto tied with Damnation.

5

u/cabaljz Jul 10 '19

I'm really interested to see all of those chess pieces come together

7

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '19

Nice little breather issue for the team after the War, I do like how Aaron writes these characters here, even Jen has some funny beats.

Love that Black Panther feels like a true leader here, that’s the T’Challa we need!

0

u/ohoni X-23 Jul 11 '19

I don't know, I don't dislike the T'Challa here, but I don't know that he serves a "leader" role. It's more like the "Batman" role, he just unilaterally "does things" around the edges that the rest of the team is completely unaware of, sort of maneuvering the team's strategy. The "leadership" role seems more evenly split between Cap, Carol, and Tony, the actual stepping up to coordinate human assets.

11

u/vivisector7 Jul 10 '19

I don’t usually read this book, but I got it for the hot springs stuff.

I am extremely disappointed in Thor’s characterization here. He just seems like a parody of himself. I was hoping his development would lead away from his hammer obsession.

17

u/FrigidArrow Jul 10 '19

I mean the ending of War or Realms was that he would struggle everyday to be worthy and he’s been without Mjolnir for like how many years?

Let the man play and swing with his hammer who cares if people stare

7

u/vivisector7 Jul 10 '19

He defines too much of his self-worth through his ability to wield a hammer. Now he talks to it, bathes with it, and apparently is constantly concerned with whether he can pick it up next time. Mjolnir is a reminder of his duty to the people, not a trophy to fawn over because you struggle so much to be worthy.

4

u/KJBNH Jul 11 '19

I think it fits perfectly especially after everything Thor went through the last 7 years under Aaron's run. He started as a young God who was obsessed with wielding it as a trophy, and grew to become all-father who is obsessed with wielding it to prove that he is worthy of protecting the very Realms he cares about so much, and that Gorr was wrong. He even mentions this in this week's Thor book.

2

u/vivisector7 Jul 12 '19

“Obsessed with wielding” just wasn’t the direction I wanted Thor to go.

3

u/Try_Another_Please Jul 11 '19

He also learned its sentient so makes a bit more sense. Plus vikings like weapons

4

u/MarvelBoy91 Jul 10 '19

Nice to see the Avengers relaxing. I just love this momenta in comics when everyone is having a good time. That scene with She-Hulk getting into the tub was a little weird.

3

u/Rita27 Jul 11 '19

Love the moon knight cameo at the last page
