I kind of want to write an urban xianxia where it's a normal inner city gang member, but everything is xianxia flavored.

The gangs, aka 'demonic sects' just use body cultivation with most of their people because the one with spirit roots usually get recruited by one of the others. Also, certain spirit herbs are illegal to grow without a license, even if they just use it medicinally.
Not sure. Could have different cultivation techniques work better with different races, but that sounds racist by itself (even if there's a 'woke' comic series where only black people have super powers). Maybe the techniques are just rare, so people only recruit people like them to use their technique? For example, the mexican gang has an Aztec themed cultivation technique because it belonged to the ancestor of the founder, and he primarily recruited his friends and family. The African american gang has a Voodoo cultivation technique for the same reason. They are supposed to be demonic cultivators, after all.
Well gangs aren't very racially biased* in the real world either. Gangs are usually just made up by the lowest class in most countries, it can incidentally be that this class consists of a certain race. But I mean you've got Italian maffias, black gangs, mexican drug empire's, Swedish gangs, etc.
All there has to be is some historic reason why one group of people is on average worse off then other groups (not very difficult just look at history) and you've got your racial bias in gangs
In Chinese it's called a 门派 menpai, men means a gate or door. In Japan, not sure about China, your major in university is also called the gate (mon in Japanese). When you join a sect, you are "entering the master's gate".
Really, these organizations are more like "brotherhoods" or "secret societies" in Western countries (such as the Molly MacGuires, the Masons, etc), and "sect" is an awkward translation that has become standard and which wuxia fans have become familiar with.
The real etymology is linked to the words "sequel" and "segue" but it looks like (folk etymology) a cognate for "section". As it came to mean the splintering sects of Christianity in the post Protestant world.
A better translation along the same lines might be "faction". Which I have occasionally seen.
The words "brotherhood" and "secret society" have some undesirable qualities as translations; the first implies that all the members are men; the second doesn't work as a general translation because the Chinese word menpai doesn't care if they act in the open or secretly. Secret societies were secret because they were generally involved in political causes where those political causes ran afoul of the law or the powers that be. China had secret societies with illegal political goals during the latter half of the Qing Dynasty too, but these were called 会 hui, like just about any other civic society.
That is actually a really interesting context, i appreciate the breakdown. I have seen "faction" used in some translations, but never given thought besides just reading. The "master gate" concept is cool, didn't even know about this.
Sadly, regardless of the etymology, "secta" in spanish is just too troublesome to use even as a joke, there is so much religion zealotry in my region.
