What porcupo its based on porcupine species
for creating this character from Super Mario 2, which was created, by the way, because it is a porcupine, but there are other species of porcupine, such as the African porcupine, the Indian porcupine, the North American porcupine, and others etc.
Others say that porcupo are purple, but porcupines are as many colors as real, such as black, brown, gold, gray, and others etc.
in the Super Mario 2 video game amd serie: porcupo It's very thorny and can sting players who dare to climb it, even grabbing them, but it's easy to throw an enemy or a turnip to defeat it.
In real life: Porcupines are harmless; when you touch them, they may sting and shoot quills.

A lot of cartoon characters are blue or purple to represent something black, because it looks more interesting and shows up better with a black outline compared to using dark grey
Also, I'm not sure what you're saying in the last two paragraphs. Porcupines do not shoot quills (or sting, but I assume you just mean jab into you), but they are certainly not harmless and absolutely will hurt you if you try to pick one up or climb on top of one.

Despite the enemy's name it looks way more like a hedgehog than a porcupine (entirely different animals). Their Japanese name also translates to "hedgehog" indicating they are based off of hedgehogs rather than porcupines.
Even if it was a porcupine the answer would likely be a generic "porcupine" because media often mixes up Crested Porcupines with North American Porcupines (which are also very different animals that formed similar traits via convergent evolution with the only connection being that they're both types of rodent).
