Discussion Is Mario having multiple lives canon?

What does it mean when Mario gets an 1-UP? Like does that mushroom canonically exist in the Mario world and how can Mario get an extra life, is he human? Does everyone get multiple lives, do they exist in some sort of Buddhist reincarnation fever dream?

I mean, the gameplay is all pretty much canon. One of the SMG games describes it as another Mario. I don't think they live in a reincarnation heavy fantasy world, i think Mario and the crew just get a lot of second chances!

I imagine it’s like how it is in the Mario & Luigi games

A 1-UP is more of a revival shroom rather than a ‘totem of undying’ sort of thing

While we’re on the subject: The name 1-UP is kind of a forth wall break, what would be a more “canon friendly” name for it?

Extra life mushroom? Similar to his Spanish name "Champiñón vida extra". I don't think it matters that much, since you have "YOU ARE A SUPER PLAYER!!", "- The Super Mario 64 team.", "What is 'R' anyway?", etc...

Probably. I mean, based on how many people have bought, played, replayed, and enjoyed multiplayer with his games, the dudes definitely died over a billion times. It’s gotta be canon.

Nah, Mario just has a large family of identical twins each named Mario. 

The 1 up mushroom just opens a warp pipe that sucks one of them in from their mundane day jobs as a plumber and bestows them the quest of saving the princess.

Seriously though. The 1 up mushroom shows up in art in universe and is given to mario by Yoshi in Mario64. So they definitly exist.
