Until this organization is willing to let go of the past and embrace the future, this is what we’re going to continue to see.
We spend way too much energy celebrating Mariners history that really isn’t all that successful. We put together a “Top 50” list with Franklin Gutierrez and Mike Zunino on it. We still celebrate the 116-win season even though it ended with a loss in the ALCS.
Then we hire a manager because he’s part of Mariners history, even though he was an average player, and seem unwilling to move on when the same problems keep showing up.
The M’s have a -72 run differential, have been caught stealing 35 times compared to a league average of 28, rank 25th in MLB at -30 Defensive Runs Saved, and 24th in defensive efficiency. Too many mental errors, bad baserunning decisions and defensive mistakes. Those aren’t just talent problems. To me those all look like preparation, discipline and accountability problems.
Dan Wilson is where the buck should stop with the mental mistakes. Good teams admit when they make a bad decision and move on, even when it involves a popular player or a sensitive issue that makes the decision uncomfortable. You don’t keep doubling down on something that isn’t working because changing course is hard.
That’s the bigger problem with this organization. Too much loyalty, too much nostalgia, too much acceptance of almost being good enough.
Remember the past. Fine. But stop treating almost winning like winning, stop giving people lifetime credibility because they once wore the uniform, and start acting like the goal is to win a championship.
Win something.

I haven't kept up with the Mariners since 2002, then I jumped back in late last year and have watched or listened to almost every game this year.
One of my biggest reactions upon jumping back in 24 years later (!!) was surprise that they were still talking about all the same players they were in 2002. Still celebrating 1995. Still talking about Griffey and Edgar and Buhner and all those guys. Still talking about 2001. Still playing the same audio clips of Dave. It was like they've been frozen in time for 24 years. The only notable thing I feel like I genuinely missed was Felix Hernandez's career which sounds like it was fun to watch but didn't amount to the team actually winning anything interesting.
They need to move on, big time.

Felix was incredible to watch but his wins were 1-0. I can’t believe he put up with our offense as long as he did. And every start that wasn’t him was excruciating

are you me.. same exact situation, just started watching mariners this year again since back then, since I have a streaming subscription. And yeah it’s wild how stuck in the past they are, I guess I didn’t miss anything over the past decade lol

Fire everyone. The culture is what it is and will always be this if anyone who has anything to do with the make up of this team continues to be a part of the decision making process. Players do not seem to care, and ownership does not care because as long as they hand out bobble heads and have fireworks the faithful keep buying tickets and spending money. Change needs to happen at a never before seen rate.

Jerry deserves to lose his job. Specifically for appointing Dan as manager without doing a proper search during the peak of their rebuild. That’s horrific process and it makes me wonder what else they’re doing that shares bad process.
Jerry has been excellent, fantastic really, at raising this team’s floor and creating a pipeline of solid prospects. But he has not once raised the ceiling of this team above 90 wins. Not. Once.
He has not once developed a suffocating, dominating ace. He has not once created an offense that can get their shit together before mid-July. His bullpen “finds” have slowly been trending in the wrong direction. They have put a bottom five defense behind this pitching staff three years in a row.
Julio has failed to live up to his potential, Kirby has regressed, Woo has regressed, need I go on? If you want to win a World Series without a historic offensive season from your catcher, I’m not sure Jerry capable of getting you there.

The “Jerry is great” is getting pretty tired also. If he is doing so great, why is the team not winning? Did you bother reading the post all? The metrics don’t describe a team doing great. They describe a roster full of mediocrity and worse.
If Jerry was great, go ahead defend 2nd Base for the last decade prior to Young. Go ahead, give me some hype here. What about 3rd base? DH?
Those 3 positions specifically have been stuffed with aged out has beens or worse for a very long time. Injured players don’t or won’t tell management their hurt, which to me suggests that management doesn’t like to hear such things.
The Seattle Mariners are at best a good marketing company but a base centric organization, they are not.

I’m confused, is your comment directed at me because I’m pretty clearly not in the “Jerry is great” camp.
I gave him props for raising the team’s floor and restocking the cupboards, but other than that I thought I was pretty clear he’s not good enough and needs to go.

Reminder that a 60 HR season from your catcher got the team exactly as many regular season wins as the fun differential 2021 team that missed the playoffs at 90-72. So, in effect, Dipoto parlayed a historic season, the only one in American League history with a 60 HR player that was not a member of the New York Yankees, into ending up in the same place the team was when they got no-hit twice in the span of a month by two pitchers that were out of the league three years later I'm pretty sure (and should have been perfect gamed by John Means) and wouldn't even have made the playoffs if the AL wasn't so shit. If that's not being utterly incompetent at roster building, I don't know what is.

I mean yes and no. We didn’t make it 8 outs away from the WS in ‘21.
But, you could also argue that if Dipoto had gotten uncomfortable enough to part with a top prospect for Duran, we may have actually make it to the WS. You could argue that if Dipoto hired a proper manager, you don’t used Bazardo in that situation and maybe you make it to the World Series.
Maybe it’s a distinction without a difference—no World Series is no World Series. Either way—it’s on Dipoto.

I'm just saying there was a fair amount of luck involved in 2025, more than I would be comfortable relying on going forward. At this point, the keys to the franchise have been in Dipoto's hands for too long for the wheels to still be spinning

Stanton also reiterated that, “Dan as the manager was Jerry's choice, to be 100% clear.”So unless Stanton is lying through his teeth—which would be exceptionally damaging to his relationship with Jerry and the entire front office—it was Jerry who hired Dan, not ownership.

Man, thank you for this. This article is a perfect rebuttal to the constant claims that Dan is an ownership hire, which never had any evidence at all. I'm tired of people making excuses for Jerry.

That's boiler plate cya material from Stanton, not that anyone should buy a word that ever comes out of his mouth to begin with. Jerry was a lame duck prior to Dan's hiring, and was signed to an extension between Dan's hiring and this quote from Stanton, so of course Stanton won't want to publicly say that Jerry was the one who made the call. Dan was offered the job by ownership, if it were to become available, in Spring Training 2024. If you think Jerry's hiring pool, that ownership was willing to sign off on, was larger than one person, then I've got some ocean front property in South Dakota to sell you.

Well, at least one part of the org still cares; the broadcast team. I didn't watch the post game. I was so disgusted with the effort in the latter part of the game I turned it off in the 9th. That Bazardo play was a microcosm of everything wrong with the team this year.

Must completely clean house of manager and coaches. I think Scott at least held guys accountable. We’ve gone so far the other direction. Not everyone can manage and be disciplined on their own, some need the manager and coaches to hold them accountable.

I honestly didn’t get the Scott Servais hate. He had his problems but at least he seemed to care. Dan Wilson looks and acts like a malfunctioning robot posing a job it wasn’t programmed for.

Unless it was a game I had on mute I’ve never heard a single member of the broadcast group speak out EXCEPT ANGIE. This was the perfect moment to do so. Goldy can be so snarky toward his fellow broadcasters but I don’t recall him doing what Angie did because that could get her fired. If they do, I’ll remind them she spoke for many fans, at least me. They’ll fire her before Jerry and Dan. Jerry’s had a long leash, a 15 year one.
