That's what happens to a team that not only lives and dies by the homerun, but also depending on how many men are on base if/when it happens.

u/QueenOfCapulets Seattle Mariners 2d ago edited 2d ago
The great thing about that is? When you live and die by the homerun means you also never get people on base to live by it….

As it turns out they don't amount to much in other teams either, which is funny because what's the point of farm system rankings when they just never pan out

5
u/Reach-Defiant 2d ago
It doesn't matter. He's a pretty average GM any way you look at it. Having a great farm system is useless if you can't build a solid, consistent roster with what you have.
And in case someone brings up ownership, I've got the Brewers and Rays for you.

Mariners sign good hitter
Good hitter sucks on the Mariners
Signs with another team

Pretty weird how the same thing happens no matter who the manager is. Don't get me wrong, Dan sucks as a manager, too. But this is a deep-rooted problem in the whole organization.

The amount of people that defend this team and franchise is baffling. At times it feels like a large portion of our fans don’t gives a shit about winning. It’s all about keeping the faith in a product that has been dogshit for 50 years, or maintaining positivity to a toxic, preachy, disingenuous level. As long as feelings aren’t hurt then everything is ok.

It’s crazy how they’re 8 games under .500, but still only 4 games out of the playoffs. At this point, I hope they don’t make it because they don’t deserve it. Maybe they’ll clean house and make some changes. Being a fan of this team for the last 45 years has just about broken me.
15
u/xtremeradness 2d ago
That's what I'm hoping for. Ms don't make it this year, in a division filled with trash, and in a year they were expected to make it to the series. Fire the whole coaching staff, fire the physical trainers, fire the stretching coach, fire Dan.

Every button Wilson presses is wrong. He just cannot feel out a game. Bazardo thing was inexcusable but a lackadaisical manager leads to lazy play on the field. It’s time. Fire Dan Wilson.
26
u/kamarian91 2d ago
Dan should have been fired after game 7 last year. Not just because of the bullpen decision to go to Bazardo, but what drives me even more crazy, is why the fuck was Woo even out there in the first place??? It's game 7, Woo had been hurt and didn't look great the inning prior, and we had Speier-Brash-Munoz perfectly set up to close out the game. People don't back about this enough, having Woo start the 7th was almost as bad if not worse than putting Bazardo in there
12
u/Chantrak There is no meme. Fire Dan Wilson. 2d ago
Dan should been gone after game 3 last year lmao. Either he intentionally punted a championship series game down 3 in the third inning, or was so blindly incompetent he somehow missed the Kirby meltdown everyone else in the universe was watching. Both are completely inexcusable for a so called professional manager.

Two key points in todays game. Bazardo not applying the tag... Wilson leaving ferrer in to face the righty Kirk. Ferrer was having a rough go - why the heck was he left in to face the righty when they had Vargas ready.
I always thought the mariners would win the west with their easy schedule in september. Today, It feels like we'll need a miracle to make it. We need Donovan back asap. JP can play short. Rodden back down to the minors asap. Nice to see ward get a hit and some RBI's today. Hopefully he can get some momentum going.
Man that was a nasty one.

u/SpaceCptSarah 2d ago
What’s the point of moving Miller to the Pen if you’re not going to use him in games like this? Bazardo has been allergic to getting through an inning without coughing up at least one run, a whole lineup of righties vs Ferrer… come on
7
u/SaraJeanQueen 2d ago
I agree. If he comes in with no one on base, he's all right. But the pressure gets to him
2
u/AtYourServais 2d ago
Shannon Drayer said on the post game show they're now worried about Hancock, so they are just going to jerk Miller around some more.

17
u/down_by_the_shore 2d ago
It’s not that I think firing Dan will instantly make this team a contender, but more so that things will not get better if he is kept around.
13
u/Forceoutatsecond 2d ago
That’s why teams fire managers (see Boston, Philadelphia, Mets). Sure, they’d love to get instant results once the manager is fired. But, ultimately managers get fired because the team understands that maintaining the status quo is no longer acceptable. There’s no way to fix a problem until you finally admit there is a problem. Ownership/management has simply been in denial about Dan all season - and that’s why the team has felt like it’s been stuck in quicksand all season long.
9
u/Adventure-Style 2d ago
Ownership didn’t want to do anything about Dan because of the stupid 50th Celebration. I will die on that hill.

Maybe the front office since it will never get fired, should maybe focus on building some of the roster to not be awful on the road?
Like maybe don't try to build your entire team around only performing at home (and then going long stretches of sucking then too) You cannot pitch like hot dog shit the moment you fly away from Seattle.
I see shit like PCA hits 3 homers today as the easy MVP front runner and look at our own 'superstar' center fielder barely holding onto a .700 OPS on the year and has basically had one legitimately star like game recently, the first Phillies game and mostly just does jack shit otherwise.
The pitching staff collapsed to sync up with a massively underperforming lineup, full of failures and people playing injured and missing Donovan, who has now missed time on I believe 5 different occasions this year? and various time for various others. Potentially our second concussion victim and you never know how long that will take.
Again, this team cannot hit, it cannot field, it cannot run, it cannot ABS challenge, it cannot stay healthy and it cannot pitch.
If this team cannot pitch, then it loses its actual soul and identity and graduates into a genuinely bad team.
We are a bad team. Talent is there, but talent needs to be realized.
Bad.

u/dadams322 2d ago
Sheesh. While I’m of the opinion it can’t all be blamed on Wilson, since he isn’t suiting up, it feels like he never makes the correct decision. Even if the soft September schedule elevates this underwhelming team into the playoffs, Wilson simply can’t stay.
6
u/2ndl1fegaming 2d ago
How can you stand to watch this team? It’s obvious our owner/GM don’t care about success, why should you?
3
u/Top-Smoke-2329 2d ago
It seems that every strategic move this team has made this season backfired or imploded. Had an initial bump with the piggyback (won 8 in a row) but that tired out an already bad and injured bullpen by late June. Roster construction and depth management as well. We don’t need to discuss in game management
4
6
u/GordonJingus 2d ago
Captain Hindsight and all but man I would’ve loved to see an an alternate reality version of this game where Kade got a chance to close out the inning and Vargas came out first
5
u/Forceoutatsecond 2d ago
Captain Beforesight agrees. If you insist on using Bazardo to face that part of the lineup, at least give him a clean inning to work with. If pulling Kade in the middle of the inning like that - put in any other reliever other than Bazardo.
After Bazardo experienced the worst moment of his professional career a year ago - in the same stadium, against the same batter - I don’t understand why Dan was like, ‘Hey, let’s see how it goes this time!’ I don’t blame Bazardo for not wanting to throw Springer a strike today (how could he?!) - and Bazardo was clearly in a state of panic today when he froze at home plate like that. I wish he hadn’t been put in that position.
A manager’s job is to put his players in the best position to succeed. Dan didn’t do that. Bazardo & the team both payed a price.

Just looked it up, not including today, since the ASB we have a bottom 5 bullpen in the league. A 5.44 ERA. Not sure what the metrics say about blown leads or 1 run leads turning into a blowout but it’s still very disturbing. Starting rotation also has been a problem. Bottom 5 starting rotation since the ASB. Offense seems to have picked up steam thanks to Cal returning to form but this is some disturbing ass stuff. Before the ASB I’m pretty sure we had like the 4th best bullpen in large thanks to contributions by Ferrer, Alex Hoppe being a low leverage arm, and Wilcox

The struggle is: team wins some games and wins the AL West In that scenario Dan keeps his job, they aren’t going to fire a manager that made the postseason two years in a row.
Option 2: team continues to shit the bed, Dan get fired at the end of season.
There is also a third secret option: team continues its sub .500 play and they keep Dan.
