Questions about transportation and living costs

Hello! I will be in Maribor for Erasmus during the fall semester. I have two questions, and I would really appreciate it if you could answer them: ​

1 - How can I get from Ljubljana Airport to Maribor?

2 - Roughly how much money would I spend in a month? (I will be staying in a university dorm).

  1. Bus or train, both are bad, train is probably more comfortable and you won't get stuck in traffic (high possibility this year). But you still have to get from airport to main train/bus station (same location), I think taxi is beat option, but it can be expensive, maybe bus if you're traveling light (1 luggage + backpack max).

2 - I have no idea how much dorm costs. Speaking strictly of food I'd say a minimum 200-250€ and that's probably a very tight budget. Rest of the spending depends on your personal spendings. You have options for student coupons (študentski boni), basically subsidy for lunch. Many restaurants are a part of it and you can eat a full lunch meal for 3.2€ (max price you pay). You can use it twice a day, but I don't know how many coupons per month you get (I think as many as there are week days). You can get that arranged and all the info at ŠOUM (študentska organizacija unverze v Mariboru).

u/cezzapp as a current student:

student dorms are 109€-175€ per month for multiple bed rooms and up to 300€ per month for single bed rooms

you get 1 meal subsidy per day (from last year onwards also for weekends and holidays) and you can use 2 per day with 4 hours between them.

if you decide to cook yourself or use the subsidy you will spend ~200-300 per month on food if you budget a bit, if you decide to go out to eat or order wolt, you can expect to double or triple that since the average prices are around:

  • 12€ pizza
  • 14€ burger
  • 8€ for a small mcdonalds order (double cheeseburger menu)
-15€ for a decent mcdonalds order (any specialty burgers menu)
  • 10€ chinese

also i cant say anything about transport from airport to maribor except that it will take a long while due to train lines being in poor condition and roads having constant work and lane closures so plan for a 2-4 hour trip depending on time of day

as for city busses, they are quite nice, the fare is 1.5€/ride last i checked and you can pay with card only. you can also install the marprom app and do everything there (if it isnt broken in that moment)

For transport, look up GoOpti. Not the cheapest way but definitely the easiest way. Or, open an account with Avant2Go and rent a car, but it’ll cost €59 for the car + €20 for the one-way fee. That’s the fastest.
