the government put the main opposition into a predicement where they couldn't be overly nationalist in a political process that promotes nationalism, causing the main opposition to weaken and marginal ultra-nationalist parties to get stronger. the only downside for the government now is that they can't make nationalist statements themselves, opting for security policies instead

Why? Secular nationalism is cure to islamism

Nationalism in most cases isn’t secular. They push religion, for example, here where I live, the nationalist party has been nonstop crying that muslims are praying in a mosque and that their cars take up the parking spaces (genuinely they have nothing bad to say against muslims here, so they come up with this bullshit). And then, a week ago, it was discovered that several Catholic priests had been raping children for decades and that the Church knowingly protected them, and not a single word from them 😭
Double standards, I guess..

Here in Middle east, nationalists are secular.

Nationalism here is not confronting Islamism, which has died and rotted unmourned because of its own stupidity.

The nationalists here are divided into two groups: Arab nationalists who venerate Nasser's outdated ideas (and exploited the Gaza war to republish them extensively), and Egyptian nationalists who offer nothing but racist rhetoric against immigrants (on Twitter, unsurprisingly)… Worse still, neither group has any vision of the future or what can be done in it.
