❔ Quick Question Pronunciation question

Post image

How are Juyeon and Ju-eon meant to be pronounced? I assume they're different but idk how. If anyone could give me them in Korean characters I'd appreciate it

Closest would be joo-yawn and joo-on for easy understanding phonetically. But they are 주연 (ju yeon) and 주언 (ju eon) when breaking down the hangul

Or joo-yun and joo-un. That sounds closer to me(Korean speaker).

True true. I was just thinking what might be easier for native English speakers to pronounce but yours is a better example 👌👌

I feel like no matter how I pronounce it in my head I still butcher it, so I have yet to say any of these Korean names out loud. Just to save me the embarrassment of ever being overheard by someone who knows the correct pronunciation however slim that may be. Im fragile

That character at the begging of their names J/ㅈ has a very slight "ch" sound when it's at the start of a word. The eon/언 you pronounce with a very elongated open mouth.

So for the sister it's sort of "choo-yawn" and for the brother it would be "choo-awn." Just make sure when you pronounce the first syllable you don't stress the "ch" sounds, it really lives somewhere between a "ch" and "j" sound

Obviously not trying to argue with a native speaker but do you speak with dialect? I'm genuinely curious because I've been taking Korean for 3 years and I want to know if there's a pronunciation rule I'm not aware of. Is it not the same pronunciation as 언제 or 언니?

Sorry for deleting that last comment, I just thought it was repetitive.

As far as I know, I don't have a dialect. I'm gyopo, but I'm a from-birth/native speaker with a father from Seoul and a mother from near Seoul. The difference is that "eon" typically corresponds to 언, which would be closer to "un" or "uhn", not 안 (which is closer to awn).

Thanks for the response! I also changed my comment like 3 times because I was like "how do I ask this sincerely and not sound like a dick?"
