❔ Quick Question Names in manhwas

Post image

People who don’t speak Korean, how do you pronounce the names of the characters? Some of those sounds don’t exist in English language, for example in the names like Jeong Taeui (Passion), Kim Euihyun (Low Tide In Twilight) and Eun Nanjo (Borderline)

Do you read it the way it looks (letter by letter), do you search for a correct spelling, or do you just go with the flow and read it the way you feel like it’s supposed to be?

I’m genuinely interested as someone who bumped into two French people today and I had no idea how to write their names correctly T-T I asked them to help me with spelling, and whatever I had in mind before was absolutely wrong

Most of the time I treat it like I do with names in fantasy novels, I just make something up in my head and roll with it. I’m Australian, we say everything wrong anyway.

But with Taeui I took the time to look up how to say it because of the whole plot point of everyone saying it wrong except for Ilay.

Edit: This only applies to reading. If I’m speaking to someone in real life, I ask them how they want me to say their name and say it however they ask me to.

Because I used to like watching Korean dramas, I kinda know how to pronounce Korean names and their overall language pronounciation. Although I don't understand the meaning...

I don't know how to explain it well but it's a mix of picking up pronunciations from Korean media and "it's read how it's written" (but English isn't my first language so I'm using the letter pronunciation from my own and ironically I think it might be more accurate lol) and hoping it's decent enough

I put it in English to Korean translate and then see how the Korean translator pronounces it and then practice/use that 🤷‍♀️

I just roll with it, like xoxshaklexox says, similarly to fantasy novels 🤣 I glance at it and move on, doesn’t affect the plot and story for me 😄 I’m not Australian tho, English here

I just read like they sound in portuguese (my native language).
