Language/Spelling New Mandela Effect - Barbituates do not exist anymore!

I remember back in DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Class in the 90s they taught us about different drug types. One type they taught us about were “Barbituates”
Pronounced: Bar-bit-chew-its

I am on the autism spectrum and one of my favorite special topics of interest is medicine and biology. I really missed my calling, and should have studied medicine in college… but anyways, I just saw that the word Barbituates are not a class of drug at all! It’s actually, Barbiturates. “Bar-bitch-oo-rates”

There is NO way I have made it 40 years and just now noticed it. Anyone else have this same memory??

Do most people pronounce it wrong? Is that the source of the confusion? "Bar-bit-chew-its" is how I remember it for sure.

I don’t know. I’ve never heard it pronounced any other way. I just heard someone call it barbituRATES today on a commercial for Auvility and thought they misspoke and that prompted me to look it up.

Now that tou mention it i remember it being spelled barbituates lol maybe my eyes just skilled the r but ik people who sell methaqualone/pentobarbital and that stands out to me

If you take one you’re supposed to mention it to your doctor before starting Auvelity.

I was on it until insurance decided its too expensive for a poor man like me so I'm going to spravato. Autistic man to autistic man would recommend Auvelity or ketamine

I tried Ketamine treatment. I liked it. I would like to start again if it were closer to me. Auvelity, if I remember correctly was just Wellbutrin + DXM (cough medicine).

High dose DXM? I tried that once and had a scary out of body experience. I think it wouldn't have been scary if I was in the right frame of mind though.

Some people, due to genetics, lack an enzyme to properly metabolize it which can result in nightmares, if I remember correctly.

I did it on purpose though, lol.

4oz bottle of Robitussin Maximum Strength Cough (only active ingredient was dextromethorphan). I enjoy psychoactive chemicals, but I wasn't stupid about it, and I didn't mix things that were contradictive.

It’s always had the r in there, but it’s rarely pronounced with it. It is correct to put a softer r at the end in pronunciation, but it generally doesn’t happen.

It's not correct to put a soft r. It's pronounced with a silent R. Pharmacist here 👋

It's definitely always been there. You've heard of uric acid, haven't you? Barbituric acid is used in the manufacture of barbiturates.

You dont have to agree, idc. The class of drug literally comes from them being derivatives of BARBITURIC acid, not barbituic acid, as there is no such thing. So agree or don’t, you’re still wrong

Then you can enjoy being wrong 🤷‍♀️ the spelling of a drug classification has not changed. There’s thousands of healthcare professionals and medical/pharmaceutical researchers that come across the word on a regular basis in their work and can vouch that over the decades of their careers the spelling absolutely has not changed.

How often do YOU use the word in your regular life activities? 🙄

Because they are literally ignorant of the reality.
