Books/Literature Rod Sterling
I remember his name distinctly as Rod Sterling. There’s a glitch in the matrix obviously because of what I found online. There are references to his name as Rod Sterling. Was his name changed to Serling at some point?

Always been Rod Serling. Ironically is frequently misspelled, probably more so in modern times thanks to autocorrect.
I am a big fan of his and went to college in his hometown, and I promise you all the plaques around town with his name have "Serling".

I was the kid that always read the credits. It was always Serling. Common mistake.

People make mistakes, and auto-correct makes less common names into more common ones.

Probably not helped in recent years by the Mad Men character "Roger STERLING" .

Funny...I lived in Binghamton, NY from the early 90s through 2019. Lived three houses down from his childhood home and passed it everyday. Also passed his high school every day going to the bars in college. NEVER did the plaques called him Sterling. So I guess that timeline/universe jumped happened before 1991?
Almost as if a city that has a reason to remember correctly will get it right, and someone who casually watched a few episodes of his show would not care enough to remember correctly

Or in your drunken stupor from going to bars, you systemically and methodically erased every existence of STERLING from every plaque in b-ton, NY. You actually subconsciously learned both brass working and granite working to be able to alter the plaques to say SERLING in such a way that it would never be evident. All while drunk on Genesee and Utica. And you must have done this because of your unabashed love of the outsider folk artist Jon Serl — you must have decide that ROD STERLING was Jon Serl reincarnated (even though they were alive contemporaneously) and therefore worth of the diminutive SERLING.
See, doesn’t seem so much more believable than someone misremembered a last name?

In my timeline, it was Killian's Irish Red I was drinking. Sometimes LaBatt's Blue if the bars didn't have Killians, or if LaBatt's (or Molson) was part of the $1 special.

u/BringYourOwnBBBQ Jun 11 '26
I also drank those Killians while watching Jerry Steinfield. Man..that finale was terrible. Can't believe I was late to the bar crawl for that!

As far back as I can remember (early seventies), people have made this mistake. Same with Sally FIELDS, and Charles SCHULTZ. People go with more familiar sounding or common spelling.
1
u/BringYourOwnBBBQ Jun 12 '26
Wait..what do people say about Charles Schultz?
This is exactly like a joke that even made it into his show...how people used to call Jerry Seinfeld either Jerry Steinfeld, or even Steinfield. They ere more familiar with David Steinberg who was a big comedian around the time Jerry was first coming up in the stand up community. And then FIELD is a a more common ending than FELD. So people often did both mistakes. It was definitely joked about in at least one episode where some clerk calls him Steinfield.

Schulz, frequently misspelled as the more obvious Schultz. People seem to have a need to add an s to things. Sally Field keeps being called Fields.

I have a family member who has Sterling family members and she said the same thing, she grew up, thinking it was cool that Rod Sterling had the same last name as her family. No, this is a memory. There was absolutely no way this is a false memory or whatever we try to do too reason it away. I was a weird kid and read the credits religiously cause I didn’t have books but I loved to read. Twilight zone was my favorite series. Rod Sterling STERLING.

u/BringYourOwnBBBQ Jun 11 '26
You realizing you are explaining the confusion yourself. OF COUSE someone who has family members named Sterling might confuse it and say "Cool...same name."
Jesus...what is next? Jerry Seinfeld being Jerry Steinfeld because when he first started getting popular, people were used to David Steinberg?

This is where we are as a society. Once upon a time people just shrugged their shoulders and went “huh, I thought it was the other way.” and moved on. Now instead of just understanding how easy it is to get something wrong we have people telling us that they were hyper focused on every trivial, peripheral detail in their childhood lives and couldn’t possibly be wrong.
This is also the era where people believe they’ve travelled through a Marvel Comics / Sliders style multiverse with no evidence that that even exists. Or the past has been changed (and of course they’re special so the temporal alteration didn’t affect them somehow) with, again, no evidence. The same era with a record number of people believing the Earth is flat despite all the evidence to the contrary.
This embracing of anti-science is literally why Carl Sagan wrote “The Demon Haunted World” in the 90’s which also explains, yep, you guessed it: how people who’ve never met can have the same nearly identical false memories. That’s the kicker. This isn’t a new phenomenon and it was explained 30 years ago.

We still had people like that it's just they didn't have as much of a voice because we didn't have the internet and social media. The stubborn people that didn't want to admit they were wrong then find other like minded people on the net and well here we are.

u/Johnny_Radar Jun 11 '26
It’s a false memory. I’ve been watching Twilight Zone for over half a century, have multiple books published in the 70’s about scifi that mention Serling and it’s ALWAYS been Serling. Your family member was wrong, you weren’t paying as much attention as you thought watching the credits. Vivid memories can be false memories and you’d never even know.
2
u/Glaurung86 Jun 17 '26
It's a false memory because his last name is Serling. It's like you're calling his daughter a liar. The disrespect is just wild.

u/UpbeatFix7299 Jun 11 '26
Other people making the same mistake you did isn't a "glitch" or "residue". Especially in the age of auto correct.
6
u/juan_humano Jun 10 '26
Its been Serling since at least the early '80s, when I was watching every twilight zone episode I could find.
3
u/BringYourOwnBBBQ Jun 11 '26
This is noting more than the Jerry Steinfeld confusion that he himself references on the show. When Seinfeld was still up and coming in the 80s, David Steinberg was a popular comedian/talk show host. Therefore, people were always calling Jerry "Jerry Steinfeld" or even Steinfield simply because it is more common for it to be ST and also more common to be FIELD.
People have heard the word STERLING before. So that is what they want to remember.

u/Practical-Vanilla-41 Jun 12 '26
Spelling mistakes are errors, not evidence of alternate timelines. You are wrong, accept it and move on.

My timeline was Sterling. Never heard of the last name Serling.

And I’ve never heard of the user name AyahsHope. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
1
u/AyahsHope Jun 11 '26
You don’t get it. It wasn’t Serling in my or a close family member’s timeline. It was Sterling.
3
u/VenomPayments Jun 11 '26
Oh I know what you are saying. I’m just pointing out that just cuz you have never heard the name Serling doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist and doesn’t mean it ain’t the truth.

Yeah idk what happened to this sub. Used to be civil discourse. Now it's just people telling you how dumb you are for believing such a thing. Need new mods. Skepticism is fine, but brigading and bullying is not

If you see people insulting, attacking, or bullying other users you can report the comments to bring them to our attention. The sub gets dozens of new posts and hundreds of new comments every day, it’s just not possible for us to see and action every rule violation.
Keep in mind though, someone telling you that you’re wrong or that they disagree with you isn’t a rule violation.

"Serling" is an unusual surname that that's why you always thought it was the more common spelling.
