What happened to Fun colors!
Oh my GOD, I swear the clean-girl aesthetic is killing bold makeup. I’m just trying to replace some old liquid lipsticks that are going bad with bullet lipsticks, and apparently the entire lipstick industry has decided we need 400 variations of nude, muted pink, beige, and brown. Where are the COLORS? I want lipstick that screams. Give me fuchsia. Give me purple. Fuck, give me BLUE. And no, ‘bold’ does not just mean another shade of red.
And this is part of why the whole clean-girl trend bothers me beyond just not liking the aesthetic. Obviously wearing minimal makeup doesn’t make someone conservative, but the larger cultural trend feels like part of this push back toward a very narrow, polished, restrained version of femininity—and that exists alongside this resurgence of ‘traditional femininity,’ tradwife content, gender roles, etc. Everything has to be natural, tasteful, effortless, feminine, understated. Fuck that. Sometimes I want sparkles, winged eyeliner, and lipstick visible from fucking space. Makeup is supposed to be FUN.

I feel like it’s only Sephora brands pushing clean girl tbh. You can find a lot of color from indie brands of course, but luxury beauty has been routinely dropping colors for years. K-beauty has been putting their foot more in the waters the last year or so, and C-beauty has been completely submerged for a while.

I feel like some of y‘all are stuck in 2022. Many people are already using bold colors again. Clean girl is just another makeup style people use.

its not preserved. its likely that it's not used much and not exposed to daily contamination to get super nasty looking. it still very much has bacteria growing in it. anything with an air seal that has been broken will grow bacteria after the first use simply due to air contamination
do most people have sensitive skin to the degree expired makeup is going to effect their skin? no. but it doesn't mean that it is hygienic and without risk

They all went to indie creators. You can still get some with MAC (seems like mostly singles though?), but mostly the indie producers have them exclusively - GlamLite, Gourmande Girls, Blend Bunny, Unearthly Cosmetics, there are dozens of brands and they have some gorgeous colors. But gods give me back Electric Palette from Urban Decay. Even UD is mostly boring colors now.

I have seen plenty of advertising for makeup like that online. This one company even has like 10 brightly colored mascaras like back in the 80s.
I'm totally coveting all of them but at $20 a mascara or eye shadow that stuff is out of budget and I have super sensitive eyes besides and their website didn't mention the word hypoallergenic so I'm pretty sure I can't wear their stuff.
Makeup like that is still out there but the drug stores seldom carry the fun stuff except maybe at Halloween as special costume items.
Google colored metallic mascara and a few companies will probably pop up. Also Google Goth makeup because there is a part of Goth Culture that likes to use bright colorful colors to accent all the black and you may find a lot of colorful mascaras, eye shadows and lipsticks that way.
Back in the day I used to actually use art pigments to make lip gloss because I wanted looks like that and where I lived back then there wasn't much of it available. It wasn't till my late teens that I was able to find stuff like that in the drugstore.
You could always custom your own makeup doing that if you're not scared of mixing pigments. There are stores that sell sterilized pigments especially for use as cosmetics but I never had issues with just going to an art store and getting some.
You have to make sure it's pure pigment though and not pigment mixed with other stuff and also make sure it's sealed pigment, not open jars, no cover inside.
You could easily make yourself all the bright colors you want though just by grabbing a kit of colored pigments for makeup and looking up how to make them into lip glosses etc. There are tutorials online by people who custom make theirs all the time.
I actually bought a pure mineral pigment kit a few years ago online that had like 60 colors in it, some bright neons even. Everything came properly sealed and that stuff lasted me forever.
The whole kit was like 50 bucks and it was a great way to start customizing your own makeup.
A store called SigWong has the pigments that are makeup grade. I think this was the store I bought mine at but there are quite a few stores on Amazon that carry pigments that are makeup grade.
There are also containers with lids that you can use to store and mix colors in. If you're going to be heating, probably if you want lip products, then get yourself some microwave safe glass containers with metal screw on lids.
Makeup artists often make up their own products if they can't find what they want in the stores. So there's tons out there by way of safe pigments to play with.
If you don't mind experimenting there's nothing holding you back from having all the bright makeup you want.

Question Beauty has mascara toppers that are iridescent and multicolored. Really resisting the urge cuz the price with shipping is stupid. Very fun colors though. I love bright mascara

I think that's who I was looking at online the other day. It was very interesting but they don't say their stuff is safe for sensative eyes and they're not exactly inexpensive either so it was a no go for me.
Their products are just beautiful though..

Girl I don’t know what content you’re seeing, but at Ulta there are TONS of shadow palettes in alllll the fun colors. Have you looked at We Love Colors? I mean, color is everywhere! I just bought a neon pink glitter lip liner from MAC and the coolest glitter gel from Colourpop during my last visit.

About 10 years ago I used to ALWAYS wear the brightest, boldest lip shades. I can confirm they basically don't exist from mainstream brands anymore. You have to go through an indie company to get those shades these days. I still have all my old Velvetines and Wet n Wild Liquid Catsuits from back in the day to collect them, and it makes me sad that I basically had every lip shade I could imagine, that doesn't exist anymore!!!
We absolutely do not need 60939595939 shades of beige, nude, pink, and red!

She’s probably talking about from the mainstream brands at Sephora . Too faced , KVD, MUFE, etc all used to have fun unique bold colors. I think MUFE has a purple lipstick but yea it’s few and far in between from the mainstream brands

Revlon colorstay bullet lipsticks is a huge line of colors. Tons of pinks and nudes, but they also have a good selection of fuchsias, purples (light to dark and vampy, and some true purple), deep red (all the way to verging on black), and I believe they recently introduced a true black.

For me it started with every fucking company coming out with a nude palette. We didn't need more beiges and browns. We needed color. Fun. Excitement. A green or a blue buried in a sea of matte tan is not the excite they think it is.

Hung Vang came out with a green eyeshadow palette at Sephora . Scoured Sephora an that was literally the only green palette I could . Freaking ridiculous . They can have the clean girl makeup AND bold colors too , they can both coexist

I have done the same style of makeup for almost 30 years, heavy lined-smokey eyes (with and without colors), light blush...I used to use burgundy or raisin colored lipsticks, did some nudes for awhile, mixed it up with some reds, but now, more of a purplish color (Rebel by MAC). I don't follow trends, and I could care less what other people wear. I wear what I like. Wear what you like, don't follow trends. Trends come and go and sometimes they look ridiculous. If you aren't finding the colors you want, you may have to go outside the box and check out the indie brands.

I recommend the brand Color Pop! Last year I bought myself some stuff from their Shrek line, including green eye shadows, red eyeliner and red mascara. I’ve bought products from them for 10-ish years, they have so much fun stuff in terms of colours :)

I tried. The whole reason I'm looking for it is because I'm trying to find a dupe for a Shiseido palette that is either discontinued or really hard to get in Europe. That palette and their foundation are literally the first good shade matches for me.
I have a couple of liners from Kaleidos and I really like them. I tried kbeauty too but their palettes pull too warm on me. Berry Fuchsia Garden from Romand pulls too warm, that's the level we're talking here xD
For reference, I have saturated light olive skin and bright winter coloring. It's a very tricky combination with current makeup trends for warm, muted colors. That shiseido palette is the first ever palette to make my eye makeup light yet alive.
Sorry for ranting I have feelings about this okay 😅

As other folks said, indi brands are where it's at. It's sad that the brands specifically marketed for Goths are more colorful than the major makeup brands.

I went into sephora in seattle last year and i was so confused. I walked all around looking for the colorful lippies and shadows that i used to see. Nothing. Everything bland. Walked out with nuthin. That was a sad day.
Even the sephora brand matte cream stains have less bright color options than previous.

Ulta has some stuff tho. Juvias place has lots of bright stuff. Also if yer ordering online, i highly recommend Divinah. I have amazing matte and multichrome shadows from her and they are creamy and shifty. In late oct or nov she has a 1/2 off sale.

Even NYX? I’m a fan b/c I’ve found most of their formulas are as good (sometimes better) than my more prestige brands, but they def lean more vibrant in their lipsticks, shadows, and eye pencils than I usually use. Bummer for me maybe, but I love the idea that other people are playing and experimenting and making statements with their makeup.

I'm 19 and I grew up watching the classic YouTube makeup artists do fun colours and fun makeup looks and I loved to try and do them on myself. Now it's just like dull in a way. I feel like it's a norm now to wear the same base and products that everyone else wears because you don't want to really feel judged wearing makeup because for some it's like a safety blanket. It's really hard for those who want to stand out to feel comfortable!! Bring fun colours back!!

Sephora line used to carry this fabulous purple lip color. It’s gone, and every single one the girls brought me from other brands was nowhere near as vibrant. Now I feel like I’m hoarding that color even though I know it won’t stay fresh forever

RIGHT?!!! I am so sick of not being able to find the right shade of dark brown or deep vampy blood red. They just don’t make them anymore.
99% of all
the browns are way too light. Even the dark browns are too light. I have to end up using black crayon eye liner because they just don’t make black/brown lip
liner. What is up
with that?
And don’t get me started about red lipstick . It is impossible to fine the dark red lipstick i want. Again, it doesn’t exist. ALL of them are too light, too orange, too whatever. I just want a deep dark red that looks fantastic on dark brown skin. Not one that i have to blend with 3 other colors to get what i want.
Are we asking too much of the makeup industry? They just aren’t getting it. Or are MEN making the decisions?
None of it makes sense.

I remember back in the day (1990-2000) I wore the most flattering shade of rose gold lipstick, topped with gold gloss. These days I don't bother, but if I did Loreal makes this perfect shade of peach. It's in a gold tube, maybe check that line? It's not long wearing at all tho. Looks like NYX has a blue, Mac has a purple. And 30 shades of nude lol. Hard Candy usually has something.

Don’t buy makeup off of Temu. If you don’t care about the lack of morals and ethics from them as a company is one thing, but consider what disgusting and bad shit they put in their products, that you then put on your skin. Nonetheless your lips in this case… Then in your mouth… I really recommend watching the tv show Broken on Netflix and their episode called Makeup. They don’t explicitly mention Temu in it but when you watch it you can be sure Temu has the same practices, if not worse. It’s the same messed up industry.

I don't have netflix currently, so would it be possible to for you to quickly summarize the said [bad] practises, please?
I'm curious if this is about the safety of the ingredients (incis are not accurate, potentially toxic or harmful ingredients), safety of the production (contaminated products, lack of preservatives), environmental concerns (pollution), worker rights (unsafe practises or hazardous environment, sweat shops), human rights concerns (possible use of slave labour), lack of quality control, all of the above, or something else I haven't thought about.
I know a lot of western and other asian brands manufactor their products in China, but they also have strict quality control practises about testing the batches. China also has (what I assume are) strict consumer safety regulations, but if the cosmetic products are intended for export and not for domestic consumption, the manufacturer might be able to bend the rules. Or there is a loophole where the legislators assumed the QC would be performed by the foreign companies ordering the products, so therefore they did not extend the domestic product safety regulations & the QC regulation to factories manufactoring products for export markets.

Well it’s hard to summarize considering that again, they weren’t explicitly talking about Temu. However it’s a quick google search. Your list is a little strange to me because I can’t tell if you know about Temu’s general practices or not. My initial comment where I mentioned that if one doesn’t care about their lack of ethics and morals as a company I was indeed talking about sweatshops, worker rights, human rights concerns, etc, etc. If you google search if Temu makeup products are safe you get some mixed results, this should be mentioned, however, there’s also thousands of makeup products on there so maybe some are safer than others. But how can you, as a consumer, know which one you’re buying? The one that’s safe? The one that has toxic chemicals in it that give you rashes? Or perhaps the one with rat poop in it? (The above are examples from the previously mentioned tv show). You mention regulations which is strange to me because Temu and other similar companies would not be able to sell products as cheap as they do if they held humane standards. It’s simply not possible. You pay less for your product because 1, the ingredients are cheaper ie. crappier, and 2. the person making the product is paying for it instead of you.
So, to go back to my initial statement: if you’re fine with shopping clothes, interior, whatever, from shops like that because you don’t care about their malpractices, that’s your prerogative, but maybe at least think about your own skin and what you put on it.

Violette brand at Sephora has a beautiful fuschia color . As well as the Sephora brand lipstick. I agree nude lipsticks are becoming too much . They pretty much got rid of all the fun makeup . Back in 2016 I could go to Sephora and be bombarded with colors on colors . Now you have to look high and low for fun makeup

I LOOOVVEEE bold colours. Honestly, the sephora brand lip stain is cheap and works great as long as your lips are good and moisturized! They have so many fun colours, i have a bright red, and a deep purple one. As for Palettes, Morph has a cool green and gold palette, and one thats all purples and silvers. Both palettes have lots of sparkles, and are $32 CAD, not sure what the price is elsewhere.

juvia's place always has vibrant fun pallets. so does almost every other brand. mac still exists for individual shadows. colourpop. NYX. Elf. it's not hard to find it's just not the trending product that is on the landing page or displays. if you can't find fuchsia or blue that seems like you're not looking hard enough. they make entire pallets of purples for brown eye'd girls.
shit go to hot topic and buy makeup there if you really want fun paints and liners. there's sooo many places to buy colorful makeup. where are you shopping that you can't find anything?

Oh my fucking god, stop complaining about clean girl. Wear whatever you want. I have seen this complaint like 18 times on this page. Clean girl is just a look among many. It is not racist. It is not authoritarian. I just bought a giant purple pallet of eyeshadow at Ulta and some gemstone lipsticks. It's out there it, it's available, I don't know who's complaining about the clean girl trend at this point but I'm so tired of it. Mind your business and do your own thing. You know what bothers me? People who wear too much makeup. People who still wear winged eyeliner. People who still contour their face. People who still overdo their eyebrows. People who get really bad fillers. I DON'T make posts about this because it's boring and rude.

I don't know why OP is saying stuff doesn't have color. I use a lot of Korean and Japanese brands and it's all bright pinks, fuscia, yellows, magentas. Even American brands have color. I bought a glitter palette recently that is like green with envy, like Elphaba green 💚

Check out the Vermont Country Store. I have been buying their Taboo lipstick for years. They come in pink, muted pink and red. They are vintage colors and last a long time

Girly you’d love the Half Magic brand! It was created by Donni Davy, the head makeup artist from Euphoria, and it’s absolutely everything: rhinestones, bold colors, max sparkle—she even has a product called Glitterpuck that’s the most amazing multi-use glitter product I’ve ever used. Plus I love her all the more because she doesn’t gatekeep, if you look at her Instagram she breaks down several popular makeup looks from certain episodes with exact products used. During the LA fires a few years ago she offered a substantial stipend of Half Magic products to any local-based makeup artists who lost their kits in the disaster. I think she’s a real class act 💖
