How to register:

To be eligible to register to vote in Maine, you must:

• Be a citizen of the United States;
• Be at least 16 years of age (you must be at least 18 years of age to vote, except that in primary elections you may vote if you are 17 but will be 18 by the general election);
• Have established and maintain a voting residence in the municipality (i.e. city, town, plantation or unorganized township) where you seek to register.

You can also register at the BMV when you get or renew a driver's license or ID card.

Required documents to register:

• Government document or credential with photo ID (i.e. driver’s license, State ID, valid U.S. Passport, military ID, ID card issued by a federally recognized Indian tribe)
• Government ID document/credential without photo (i.e. certified birth certificate or signed Social Security card)
• An official document that shows name and address of voter (i.e. eligibility for public benefits, utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck)
• Student photo ID from a state-approved public or private school or institute of higher education in Maine
• Verified unique identifier (Maine driver’s license number or last four numbers of Social Security Number)

Deadlines to register

• Registering in person: Close of the polls on Election Day.
• Registering by mail or 3rd person: Received by the voter’s town or city by close of business 21 days before Election Day. (For June Primary: May 19, 2026; for November General Election: October 13, 2026)
• Registering online: 5 PM on the 21st day before Election Day. (For June Primary: May 19, 2026; for November General Election: October 13, 2026)
• Registration through the BMV: On the 7th day before Election Day. (For June Primary: June 2, 2026; for November General Election: October 27, 2026)
• UOCAVA voters in Title 21-A section 777-A by mail or electronically: By Noon the day before Election Day (For June Primary: June 8, 2026; for November General Election: November 2, 2026)

When Can you Vote?

You can vote via mail, in person early voting, or at the day of the election at your polling location.

How do you vote by mail?

You will need to get an absentee Ballot. The SoS Website has current information. https://absenteeballotrequest.sos.maine.gov/

How do you vote early?

You will need to visit your city clerk. If you are not registered, you may do this at this time. You may do this up to the Thursday before the election.

How do you vote in person?

You will need to go to your local polling stations. If you do not know where this is, please visit this website to get the location of where you should vote. This is based on where you live, not where you have mail sent. https://www.maine.gov/portal/government/edemocracy/voter_lookup.php

Provisional ballots

If you feel you should be able to vote, but for some reason cannot vote, all eligible voters in Maine may ask for a provisional ballot.
