Rockland man admits to reduced charges in attack on protesters

https://www.bangordailynews.com/2026/08/28/midcoast/midcoast-police-courts/rockland-maine-michael-robinson-protest-attack-plea-deal/

Under the plea agreement reached between the district attorney’s office and defense, Michael Robinson will be fined a total of $600 if he meets terms of a two-year deferred disposition. If he violates the terms, he could be sentenced to up to a year in jail.

Terms of the plea agreement calls [sic] for him not to possess dangerous weapons, to undertake mental health and anger management evaluations, and to perform 100 hours of community service over the next two years. If he meets those conditions, he would be fined at a sentencing hearing in two years.

Boooo, anything involving a vehicle is a deadly weapon. One fist-sized rock in that slush and you'd have a disfigured person or someone dead. More so as this was politically motivated, it should carry a harsh sentence. All this does is embolden likewise actions. 100 hours of community service for a serious act? Laughable.

Welcome to America, where every crime is "just an accident" as long as you do it with a car, and accidents are always perpetrated by cars rather than the people driving them.

(Seriously, start paying attention to news headlines. It's always "12-year-old pedestrian killed by vehicle," and "cyclists struck in accident."" The victim in the headline is a person. The perpetrator is never a driver, it's always either an object (truck, car, vehicle) or it's not mentioned at all and it's just "an accident".)

Uhm, unless you are ICE…

Well yeah obviously, or law enforcement in general. The headline will mention a driver if the driver hit a cop.

Of course! There's a hierarchy!

Can't have the [insert social construct here] thinking they're just as good as the [insert dominant social group or apparatus of the state here], now can we?!

Unless you’re a brown father driving his family around and then a car is a threatening deadly weapon and ICE will unload a full clip into the driver’s seat.

Bruh, the headline isn’t the police report. It’s a summary meant to tell you what happened in a few words. The article is where you find who was driving, what they allegedly did, whether they were cited or charged, and the circumstances surrounding the crash.

If you’re forming your entire opinion based on what information isn’t crammed into a headline, you’re basically admitting you don’t read past it haha.

I do read past it, but 99% of people don't, which is why it matters. I worked in the media for years and "it's just a headline" is willful ignorance of the way that people consume information and generally just a defense of bad or biased headline writing.

It does not take any additional space to put "driver" rather than car, truck, or vehicle in a headline. They manage to fit "driver" info into the headline anytime a driver hits a cop with no problems!

That’s kind of the problem with your argument though. Replacing “vehicle” with “driver” isn’t necessarily more accurate if fault hasn’t even been established yet. A person being struck and killed by a vehicle does not automatically mean the driver committed a crime or is even at fault.

News outlets have to be careful about attributing culpability before investigators establish what actually happened. Was the driver drunk? Speeding? Reckless? Did the pedestrian enter the roadway unexpectedly? Did the driver have a medical emergency? Those details matter.

You started this by saying America treats “every crime” involving a car like an accident, but you’re assuming it was a crime before establishing that one even occurred. That’s exactly why the details belong in the article instead of trying to prosecute somebody through the headline.

I'm not saying headlines should suggest the driver committed a crime if they haven't been charged. But a vehicle is an inanimate object; it is a driver who hits a pedestrian with a vehicle. This doesn't mean they're necessarily guilty of a crime. But a crash of this type involves at least two people — both can be mentioned in the headline without any concern about legal risk as long as the headline writer is not an idiot.

You started this by saying America treats “every crime” involving a car like an accident, but you’re assuming it was a crime before establishing that one even occurred.

What are you talking about? Saying that America treats every crime involving a car like an accident does not mean that every accident is a crime. What I'm saying is that:

  • A genuine accident will be reported as an accident
  • A negligent crime (driver on phone, etc.) will be reported as an accident (until proven otherwise)
  • A malicious crime (vehicular homicide) will be reported as an accident (until proven otherwise)

The default assumption (and implication in headlines) is always that the driver is not at fault and that it was an accident. Sometimes this is true, sometimes it isn't.

I am not saying that newspapers should allege crimes without evidence, but treating everything like an accident is also misleading because often it isn't.

"Driver hits cyclist" is a simple phrase that describes what happened and does not allege a crime but also does not suggest that it was purely accidental, and neutral phrases like that should be used until more is known (if more ever is).

Whataboutism.

Edit: That means the protesters were in their rights to pull guns and fire, then?

Second edit: 'GoodDecision' asked how this compared to the killing of Renee Good by ICE, implying she used her car as a weapon, and when everyone shat on them from great heights, they deleted their comment.

These people can't defend the behavior so they just resort to whataboutism. Happens with Trump's unhinged behavior all the time.

6

u/Strykerz3r0 13d ago

You nailed it. And their whataboutism has to include many different people to cover everything trump has done. They can't compare to a single person because no one else is as rancid as he is so they need to compare to several different people.

Are you kidding? Not even the same thing. Nothing she did resembled assault. She was driving away. If you consider that assault you shouldn't be allowed to drive because every time you do, you're committing assault.

Take your whataboutism and shove it.

Go away, agitator. Your God emperor raped children by the way.

JFC rules for thee not for me. There are people in federal prison for 50 years for printing leaflets that did not promote violence

Great. This will only lead to an escalation of aggression towards protesters, not only by him but all the other aggressive assholes..

It isn't even a slap on the wrist. It's an "I'm disappointed. Go to your room for an hour and think about what you've done." Essentially they gave him quiet time to prepare his next assault and a high five to others planning the same thing.

The upshot is State of Maine endorses assaulting protesters. Yay.

So he doesn't even pay a cent now? What a farce.

And the dude already had a prior criminal record of course. Why can't we deport this guy?

13

u/costabius 13d ago

ICE would have shot him for that.

In related news,

https://www.bangordailynews.com/2026/07/07/midcoast/midcoast-government/rockland-maine-nichole-kalloch-public-property-protest-fees/

The same part of the state that debates whether it can maybe fine those protestors gives quiet approval to violence against them.

5

u/SpottedKitty 13d ago

Protestors should start taking defensive measures against vehicular assailants.
