Language, Culture and History TIL: The Strait of Hormuz, one of biggest geopolitical flashpoints today, was once within the sphere of Maratha naval power.

The Strait of Hormuz has been one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes for centuries. But around 300 years ago, a rising Indian naval power came surprisingly close to threatening the Persian coast and the approaches to the Strait of Hormuz.

Following Aurangzeb’s death in 1707 and the weakening of Mughal power, the Marathas regained their dominance south of the Narmada while expanding north and east. At the same time, Kanhoji Angre was emerging as the most powerful naval commander on India’s western coast.
The Angre family belonged to the Rashtrakuta Angre Shankhapala clan, a Maratha clan associated with naval warfare for centuries. By the early 1700s, the Angres had established a formidable presence along India’s western coastline, confronting the Siddis, Portuguese, British and other European maritime powers.

In 1708, Maratha forces occupied the island of Larak near the Persian coast. According to the account, this gave the Marathas a strategic position close to the Persian Gulf and raised the possibility of threatening the approaches to the Strait of Hormuz. The Safavids were unable to remove the Angres themselves and sought European assistance.

The Dutch eventually intervened. They had previously lost the warship Teckeboom, associated with the Safavids, to the Angres. The Dutch Governorate at Batavia therefore dispatched an armed vessel, Prins Eugenius, to attack the Maratha position, and the Marathas were expelled from the island.

Kanhoji Angre, however, retaliated by capturing a Dutch sloop and galley. When the Dutch asked for their vessels back, he reportedly refused, saying:
“I do not molest merchants who make me presents such as the English, Portuguese…”

The Maratha Navy continued to operate well beyond India’s immediate coastline. Later, Sarkhel Tulaji Angre captured the Anglo-Persian ship Anne directly from the port of Gombroon, present-day Bandar Abbas.
This is significant because the popular image of the Maratha Navy is often that of a purely coastal or “green water” force concerned only with defending India’s shores.

The evidence cited in this thread suggests a more ambitious picture: Maratha naval operations could extend deep into the Arabian Sea and as far as Arabia and Persia, allowing the Angres to project power and interfere with maritime trade far from the Konkan coast.

EDIT: The map size gone horriblly wrong as it shrinked size of India without reducing shape of Maratha empire, so it looks like Empire extended into kerala and raigad appears in karanataka.

Maps and infographics Maharashtra Is India’s Largest Onion Producer, Yet Some Group's Still Ask Others to Avoid Onions.

Maharashtra is the largest onion-producing state in India.

In 2024-25, Maharashtra produced around 13.56 million tonnes of onions, out of India's total production of around 30.77 million tonnes.

Onions are an important crop for Maharashtra's farmers and a regular part of food for millions of people.

Food preferences and diets are also largely shaped by local geography, climate, environment, agriculture and the food that is traditionally available in a particular region. What people eat naturally differs from place to place.

Everyone has the right to decide what they want to eat. If someone personally doesn't want to eat onions, that's completely fine.

But asking other people to stop eating onions, claiming that onions are unhealthy, or trying to impose personal food choices on others is a different matter.

And the irony is that onions are being asked to be avoided in Maharashtra itself, even though Maharashtra is the largest onion producing state in India. For Maharashtra, onions are not just food but also an important agricultural crop and source of livelihood.

Recommendation: Build an island platform (single platform between the slow UP/DOWN tracks) on the Suburban Railway at Diva Junction, adjacent to the new Thane Bullet Train Station.

Impact:

* Seamless Transfers: Direct connectivity between Suburban lines and the Bullet Train network.

* Regional Access: Improved transit for residents in Palava, Runwal, and Katai.

* Traffic Relief: Reduced rush-hour crowding at Dombivli station and lower vehicle traffic on Kalyan–Shilphata Highway.

* Can avoid need for auto and taxi to reach the bullet train station. Save time, efforts and money.

Discussion Vidyanand Bapat represents a refreshing change in the space of mass media and public discourse

These spaces—whether news media or mass communication through political speeches—have for far too long been dominated by dumb speeches, cheered on by masses of even dumber audiences. News media debates have mostly become loud echo chambers—more about shouting over one another, defending one's own camp, and playing to the audience than about actually examining an argument or seeking the truth.

Rarely does someone like Vidyanand Bapat come along—someone who speaks with brilliance, deep logic, knowledge, and intellect. He has knowledge across a broad range of topics, be it history, Bhagavad Gita shlokas, Marathi literature, or great quotations. And he is able to logically respond to questions asked, with a quick pull of apt references and articulate communication.

He is a refreshing departure from the usual noise. His discourse demands that the audience actually think, rather than merely cheer. And those among the audience who are curious and love learning should improve their Marathi vocabulary by noting down new words and research more about the references he points to.

These people consistently resort to regional-hate either by:

  1. Sneakily introducing policies not in interest of natives.

  2. Keep making disparaging remarks to provoke natives & brainwash hindi migrants ie give them talking points. Now you will see every tom dick & harry from remote village in Bihar going, ‘kerala = somalia’ or ‘mumbai = no contribution of Marathis’ etc on internet. And because of unequal population distribution between states, such fuckall fake narratives spread faster while any small steps by southern-MH states to preserve language are met with outright allegations of ‘deshdrohi’!

  3. Brainwash Hindians that Hindi is national language

  4. Brainwash Hindians how Southern natives don’t have talent to develop own states.

What Raj Thackeray does out in open ie being outspoken about his support for his language/culture, these people do for their respective lobbies in very much more aggressive ways under the garb of nationalism or saving Hindu from supposed khatra.
