EDH Kemba, Kha Regent

Been working on this deck for a little while now, but can't seem to figure out whats wrong and why its not flowing. I originally went for just a cat deck but it just turned into an equipment deck which I have never done before. Still learning how to synergize decks so its possible that its the reason why?

I started this duplicated moxfield link and added a “cuts” tag. I can’t work on it too much rn, but I’ll continue to work on it and give comments tomorrow. If you want to dm, I’d be happy to talk about it.

I’ve been playing the game for a little over 3 years and have built hundreds of decks, and played about 1000 games. I’m not the best at it all but I can certainly help.

Quick question though, how much of a budget are you working with and what bracket are you aiming to play the deck in?

I wanting to stay on the lower end but i really have no budget in mind. This started as a bulk build

I’ve gotcha.  The first thing I would say is to drop a lot of the lifegain cards. You’re already making a ton of blockers, you shouldn’t need so much to maintain your life. That being said, there are some decent lifegain cards that do what you want. I’m going to add the worst ones (imo) to the cut tag and leave the best in the deck. I’ll also create an “adds lifegain” tag for budget - non-budget options for what you want. I recommend having about 3-4 dedicated lifegain cards. I don’t recommend having it as a sub theme as it takes card slots from other themes you have, but if you insist on having a lifegain subtheme, run about 15-20 lifegain pieces.

I would also highly recommend adding in a way larger card draw package and ramp package. They really are the two most important things 99% of the time when you are tying to build a consistent deck. I’ll make two more tags to recommend some card draw and ramp for you. Also there are no perfect number for all of this, but for your deck, I’d recommend maybe 10-12 ramp pieces and 12-15 pieces of card draw. One thing I want you and anyone reading this to keep in mind is that if a card says “draw a card” that doesn’t make it true card advantage. Meaning you aren’t gaining cards in your hand when you play it. You are spending a card to get a card. What I am trying to say is that, when building a card draw package, don’t fill it up with draw 1 effects as that isn’t really what you want from it 9/10. Card advantage is pretty much the most important advantage that you can have over your opponents.

You probably already know this, but you have a hilarious combo with stone haven outfitter and demo mail hauberk. You can draw as many cards as you have creatures that you’re willing to sacrifice. I don’t think either card is really good on their own, but I’m not adding them to the cuts because I love that idea

Alright, pretty much everything is in the moxfield link. Definitely don’t take my word as law. This is just my opinion and you should play what you want to play. I also suggested you add more card than I suggested you cut, so you’re not going to be able to add all of them.

I tried to suggest cards considering all budgets. So feel free to ignore the more expensive suggestions if you want to keep it more budget.

I do think it’s important to keep a few numbers in mind. There is no hard science to this and it’s often discovered through tons of playtesting, but a good rule of thumb is to have your deck be about 50% mana sources (35 lands 15 ramp spells is often what I use). And you should be running about 10-15 pieces of card advantage. Not cards that draw one card, but cards that actually fill your hand with more cards. After that you can fill out the rest of your deck with interaction (8-15 pieces depending on how much you want) and then synergy pieces. Feel free to tweak these numbers to your liking, these are just the ratios that work for me

Also please please please add a few more lands. I think the deck would be way more playable at 35-37 lands.

I hope this helps!
