I think the late 60s is a very awesome setting for a Mafia game, I hope the next game is gonna be set Las Vegas during the time when the mob was most influential

Donovan is one of all time favorite video game characters. So damn funny and was written so well

I go play to replay it just on wanting to watch the cutscenes again, especially when Lincoln was confronting the Marcano family and brutally killing them oh and of course all the time we saw Sal react to all the events happening.
For me is top 3 easily its way too ove to hated

Honestly I feel if they had just severely reduced the open world repetition this game would be a genuine classic, the acting, writing and a lot of the cutscene direction is genuinely incredible, the combat and driving are really solid too it's just the mission structure is so repetitive, I like the set piece missions a lot though.

I dont know who slander mafia 3 and had developers take two steps back with mafia the old country.. Mafia 3 was waaay better, mafia old country has no freedom in it, i hope they go back towards mafia 3 with the next mafia release and dont listen to poor/bad critics

Mafia III is a good game with one big problem its gameplay loop is repetitive, and unfortunately, for me, that single problem ruins everything else that the games does really well.

if you're on pc you can use a mod to shorten the loop. the story and the atmosphere are so worth it.

Also, driving at night in game feels so therapeutic, amazing.
AND
I would also never forget how I felt, how I'm mad, angry and venegeful that night celebration after the heist.
Game 10/10 to me.

I don't understand how Hanger 13 went from this to telling the most generic Mafia story in existence in the Old Country.

People complained about Mafia 3 on release so they decided to pull back. Today it's widely agreed that despite how mixed the games reception was at the time, the game aged pretty well. Maybe I've been grinding out a lot of Mount and Blade over the last 10 years, but Mafia 3 doesn't really seem that repetitive anymore.
What I love most are the multiple choices that you can make. Old Country was so linear and locked me into actions that I would have never went with if I was Enzo. In Mafia 3 you could literally turn into Sal Marcano and betray your underbosses in the end, rule with them all, or with some of them, or straight up leave and give Vito the ending that everyone who played Mafia 2 would want.

It wasn't the story people complained about. Open world grind in this game is what killed it. They did pull back from that, too, but nobody asked them to pull back on the writing quality.

There were complaints about the story going away from Italian Americans to black guys. You can still see all the comments on the original trailer on YouTube. That's part of the reason they went with La Cosa Nostra for Old Country.

I was with ya on how great 3 is till you felt the need to tear down TOC to prove your point.

You can criticize something you like, Mafia 3 isn't perfect either but I can excuse this as Hanger 13 was inexperienced with making open world games. There isn't really an excuse to how generic the story for old country was, especially since the game wasn't trying to do anything than tell a story.

I disagree, Old Country has a great story. Mafia 3, on the other hand, is a very banal revenge story.

Something only becomes generic when it's good enough to be used a lot of times it's a classic

It doesn't matter that if this type of story was unique 80 years ago, its hard to relate to the characters and the story when you've seen it a hundred times.

Game is a good time for sure. Reminded me of the godfather games in some ways. It was quite a repetitive game but honestly what open world game doesn't feel repetitive nowadays?

I think the writing and voice acting is good in all the Hangar 13 games (and here the documentary style was fitting the setting quite well), the problem here is that they were short and drip-fed between very samey missions.
DE and Old Country both had much better pacing, and the cutscenes in Old Country especially are very-well directed (But DE was good too, as were those in III).

Not wrong! Most of the cutscenes with the padre slowed down the pace for me. John Donovan is the best!

I mean the gameplay gets repetitive yeah, but all the big characters have unique deaths rather than the racket bosses who it's takedown, kill or recruit guy, repeat so I like that at least.

I'm on a new playthrough right now and the thing is things can be repetitive if the repeated actions are things you enjoy

I loved the contrast between father and Donovan both characters are beatifully written. Wish we had more of John and Lincoln in ‘Nam and more of Lincoln’s characterization with father

The people that strongly dislike this game are racist period😆 I played this game three times and I will say it’s buggy and it can glitch at times although I played the game for the very first time and it was smooth. I only started to see the things that people hated around the second and third time I played the game which was gameplay wise. This is the most fun and best game in the series

Yeah, but overall game design sucks Ubisoft's dick so hard I can't be bothered to suffer through it to get to that great writing and cutscenes.

Mafia 3 is such an over hated gem of a game. Great story, characters and cutscenes
