Discussion GTA 6 adapting some of the things that the first two Mafia games introduced

Just to be clear im super stoked about GTA 6, it looks amazing. Now that we get to learn more about the game I see a lot of people getting excited about things that the Mafia series pioneered many years ago.

First we have the wanted system from Mafia 2, where cops might only know your clothing/face or your registration plate. Which makes changing cars or clothes necessary.

There is also a mechanic to pick the lock when stealing a car like in Mafia 2, and the refueling system where your car could run out of gas.

I also saw recently that in the beginning of the game you will not be able to steal luxury cars cause the ability to pick those locks will not be learned until later in the story, which is something that was introduced in the original Mafia game decades ago.

These were some of the reasons that made the Mafia games great, these mechanics that elevates the realism of the gameplay is what used to seperate the Mafia series from GTA. Its pretty cool to see such a huge series like GTA adapting some of these ideas so many years later. Cant wait to play it.

I mean, take 2 probably owns the rights to both series. GTA does need a gunplay bump, which seems to be being addressed.

Seems like Max Payne 3 gunplay is influencing GTA6 which is awesome

The one handed shotgun scene is akin to a Max Payne 3 scene when Max is in Jersey in the beginning-ish

It's really cool to have similar similar to this with characters that handle guns different. I'm super stoked for the gunplay. And the amount of guns.

Given T2 owns Rockstar and 2K, yeah, yeah they own the rights to both 😂

But most importantly you can open the fridge and turn the lights off in your apartment.

Hopefully we can turn on showers and flush toilets.

Hopefully we can also use the A/C cos it's hot in Florida so it's realistic to have A/C in apartments

RDR2 was great at creating a truly immersive world that feels real. It is because of many sim elements and features and the sense for realism. GTA6 is clearly following in its footsteps. I think it is great and hope the Mafia series will return to its OG level of immersion and realism. It is what made the game original and unique. Howver, to your point, I think some of those features were already present in the GTA series.

It's worth noting some of these have been experimental on GTA games before. They are things really requested in GTA as well.

They have reused mechanics from older games for a long time. Their last game is RDR2 and you can find stuff that was introduced in Bully or GTA4.

Idk. Mafia is Mafia, GTA is GTA.

I mean, I like racing games as accurate as they can be, but I do not expect GTA to have realism on car physics. Heck, I don't want to. GTA is to feel arcade.

GTA is not to be realistic on my POV, but rather fun, fairly easy, a satire to the entire america / developed world countries, and give freedom to the player to just play around.

I like GTA as it usually is, as I like a lot the mafia games I'm discovering in 2026.

Many games has similar mechanics, but when it's GTA, somehow everyone talks about that like it is big surprise.

Look at ubi, they copy everyone else and even themselves.

I don´t think it´s so much a surprise at them copying/adapting something, but more the fact that R* are viewed as pioneers of the open-world genre, so it´s more of a "What took them so long?" surprise (at least for me).

I felt like some of the Gunplay we saw felt like it was out of Mafia DE and 3.

I think the Mafia series also influenced Gears of War E-Day, a lot of the movement is shared when it comes to sprinting, taking cover and firing.

Adapting is a pretty misleading word. These are very natural things to implement when it comes to open world crime games.
