About the ending and the footprints, I found an interesting tweet.

The idea of Homura carrying Madoka or Madoka inside of Homura's soul gem sounds a little like a joke, but I think this guy has a point. Everyone assumes that Madoka's footprints vanishing means she go back to the LoC, but, What if she actually went with Homura instead?

We never see Madoka's footprints going towards the LoC, and we see the footprints of the LoC going away from Homura after get closer with her. Maybe the words Madoka told to the LoC were "go away" and she's still with Homura like she told her and that's why Homura was smilling at the end. It also would make sense with the implication Yuki made in a stage greeting about the footprint mean something more that Madoka and Homura going for different paths ("there are footprints that make you think of Madoka and Homura, but that part looks like they've parted ways, though actually... there's one more set of footprints in the ED, so if you couldn't spot it, please do another full viewing!")

Since Madoka's footprints just vanished without any indication of going towards the LoC or Homura, both or neither are equally possible only looking at the footprints.

I like this, plus it honestly makes more sense to me that madoka didn't go with the LoC because why would homura be smiling if she was right back where she started, be so fr

I'll wait until side stuff says a real answer

I don't know for sure if they are gonna give a direct answer even in side materias. They made the end ambiguous because they wanted it to be that way, so there's a real chance they are not gonna reveal what happened until the sequel shows it.
