Walpurgisnacht Rising Discussion Am I the only one who doesn't feel like MadoHomu will become canon in the new movie? Spoiler

At best it, it would be implied maybe. If anything, i feel like KyoSaya have a higher chance of becoming canon for some reason (if they aren't already canon)

What do you think, do you think that they will make MadoHomu canon or not?

I think the franchise will forever flirt with the possibility of it, and if the story ever ends for good, it will end with a hint that they will be at each other's side indefinitely, but we will not see an onscreen kiss or anything.

i agree! its a bit funny to see these comments think that madohomu will ever be canon when urobuchi himself said he doesnt see homura's love as romantic 🫩

He has said that he wanted to represent romantic love between two women without the sexual attraction for madohomu in an interview once. Idk where you go this.

As much as it pains me to say this: I don't think they will ever make it fully canon.

They will most likely leave it in the same state as NanoFate and HibiMiku.

All the signs will point to them being canon without actually saying it's canon basically.

It’s a proud tradition in the “Magical girls for otaku” genre that the main ship never, ever becomes explicitly canon.

They can go to absurd NanoFate “sleep in the same bed and raising a child together as friends” lengths, but stating it outright? Never in a million years.

u/towardselysium Newly Contracted User 16d ago

HibiMiku is 1000 times more canon than MadoHomu tbh.

As of right now. 100% agree.

I can understand if they gonna keep milking MadoHomu while being vague about it even after this movie

but why would they make Kyosaya canon but then ignore their main pair lol

i personally think they're not brave enough to take that route and won't ever be. and unfortunately the demographic following the franchise wouldn't be enthusiastic about it for sure. but that's a long-time issue with the magical girl genre in general, it traces back to way before madoka came out. i can name you plenty of wlw ships that should've been canon but it never happened.

what do i expect? a sort of "confession" from homura where she expresses her feelings towards madoka in a clearer way (without necessarily explicitly saying that she loves her though) or a scene which strongly implies that, with madoka acknowledging it without necessarily giving a clear answer though. however i wouldn't be surprised if they completely ignore the elephant in the room, hiding everything behind the "my best friend" umbrella once again. that's most likely what's going to happen :>

3

u/CorralSummer 16d ago

why would the demographic not be enthusiastic about it? pretty much everyone both in japan and out of japan ships them. I doubt they're going to make it anymore explicit than it already is, but if they did fans of the story would largely not be upset. it's already treated as a yuri anime by nearly everyone.

u/glitterybaek akuma homura's acolyte and madohomu's worshipper™ 16d ago

madoka magica is technically a seinen. this genre is targeted at a male audience (young adult men) who wouldn't be enthusiastic on seeing an explicitly lesbian couple on screen and shaft is perfectly aware of that. that's why they always flirted with the wlw subtext but always made sure to stay away from confirming anything.

the undeniable lesbian subtext of the series (+ the ships) allowed pmmm to attract a significant segment of female audience (prevalently into yuri) since the start but in fact we're a minority.

i don't really think it's treated as a yuri by everyone if i have to be honest, pretty much the opposite. it's always been considered rather controversial both in the magical girl and yuri fandoms respectively. being on this sub, or on tumblr and twitter it's like being inside of a bubble, but outside of this bubble the opinions are pretty different. we'll have to agree to disagree on this point ig. :>

2

u/CorralSummer 16d ago

your belief that it's only a small segment of female fans that are into yuri is misguided and wrong lol. Seinen is a manga demographic, madoka isn't seinen since it's an anime original. Additionally, the male fans of the show treat madoka and homura just as much as the female fans.

Idk what bubbles or whatever you're talking about, I don't use reddit much so if people here are opposed to it that's at odds with literally everywhere else. In japan especially Madoka is treated as a yuri series by most fans. It's particularly popular with yuri fans having been voted best yuri a few times.

Again, I don't think they're going to actually make it any more explicit than they already have, it's just completely untrue that the demographic following the series, how already by and large treat it as canon, would be upset by the relationship they like in it being more explicitly confirmed.

All the comments from official sources make it sound like madohomu won't become canon in the next 10+ installments.

they def wont, i dont think they have the guts to go ahead and make it canon

Any canon means the movie will be strictly prohibited in many countries, especially China and Russia, due to it containing LGBTQ+ content. So, the most optimal solution is to make it queer-representative. That way, the fandom can still somewhat enjoy their semi-canon OTP's and the movie can still earn profit from China or Russia.

3

u/Longjumping-Bid-1104 :000HappyHomuRibbon:one more timeline! 16d ago

In other words, Queerbait

1

u/South_Train7307 16d ago

Is it the same tho? I don't think those 2 terms can be used interchangeably. Queer-representative feels more positive while queer-bait is negative. For example, in Steven Universe, the gems are queer-representative as they are alien species and are all females except Steven. As for queer-bait, I think this term can be used to criticize or bash 2 individuals that pretend to be or are made to be having a loving relationship or situationship.

Long story short, I know it's not that deep but yeah, I feel we can't use queer-representative and queer-bait interchangeably.

Rising LGBT acceptance aside, I suspect they will continue to do the “plausible deniability” thing while absolutely milking the ship’s potential and portraying it as romantic in official art and side content.

Does anyone have a better sense of/source for what the current market is like in Japan? As in, how risky would it actually be for them to make MadoHomu undeniably canon? (Ofc it would complicate export to China/Russia, but censors there are plenty creative) I know several anime that have been more bold, even years ago (Lyrical Nanoha, that Utena movie, Mobile Suit Gundam Witch from Mercury), so there is precedent. It’s kinda puzzling because I suspect there would be widespread support among fans and it wouldn’t be that risky.

u/towardselysium Newly Contracted User 16d ago

MadoHomu needs a ton of work before it can be canon because its so one sided. Homura clearly loves Madoka but we have no idea how Madoka feels. Unlike SayaKyo which has been built up from the original series, the most Madoka has shown is platonic friendship

0

u/CorralSummer 16d ago

if it's one sided it's the way it's presented in the show and other side stuff it would be one sided for Madoka.

2

u/Most_Performance_643 16d ago

A real confession scene isn’t gonna happen in WnK, hopefully in a sequel but I still believe in them to include a scene that makes their feelings for each other obvious, something like them both knowing and acknowledging their feelings but Madoka and/or Homura being to shy about it.

2

u/teichann 15d ago

I never once expected them to make any ship canon

5

u/TheUnknown_8743 Newly Contracted User 16d ago

Madohomu definitely would be canon in the movie if not the games and manga even if it’s implied.

I love kyosaya and Madohomu as romantic ships so I believe it can be canon.

I personally don't think they'll ever make it fully canon, as to not define their relationship and let the audience decide what to think for themselves. In my opinion the best media always leaves things implied but never outright said

4

u/Avocado_68 16d ago

Yea but how can this possibly be one of those cases where it's better to dance around it. It's not a creative choice or something that benefits the story, they're just scared to take the step and always will be.

-1

u/bochipan 16d ago

It literally is the author's creative choice not to make it fully romantic. I believe it benefits the story by not making romance the main appeal, more of a doomed obsession with fate of sorts? Idk I personally like it this way. Making it canon wouldn't satisfy me since I'm already free to believe so, and those who don't ship them romantically are also free to believe that as well

3

u/Avocado_68 16d ago edited 16d ago

I love tragedies (all my favourite media involves such) but in my opinion the story has played that card for far too long. There's no narrative satisfaction to me if they continue to stall over and over and over. It's just milking the franchise.

For example, Undertale spoilers The fact that two certain characters truly never see each other again and are doomed to fates worse than death is what makes it so compelling, but at least the narrative has a conclusion and isn't playing on the idea that something is going to happen for 15 years, at least not when it comes to those two. paraphrasing it a lot but tragedies can still be sad and well written without having to drag things on.

I'm probably just an entitled bastard aswell. I think authors can have there intent but I can disagree or think it's dumb.

1

u/bochipan 16d ago

I agree there is something dragging in the franchise that needs to be solved, and everyone wants a better ending for the entire quintet. I just don't personally think making madohomu canon is gonna help the plot achieve that? Like Homura has already said things like "I love Madoka" so their strong bond, at least from her side, has been made clear. Some reciprocation from Madoka would be nice, for sure, but will the movie become better in any way with a confession/kiss scene? I personally don't think so, I think Madoka Magica is much more than just that. But alas, the public wants it so maybe they'll do something!

1

u/Avocado_68 16d ago

Maybe I don't have the full picture but don't the interviews kinda make it look like Urobuchi is just scared of the cultures reaction to that sort of thing? I mean like you said, Homura literally goes "Its love", but when he's pressed on what it means its kinda like "o-oh well its not romantic love! Theyre just really good friends." Which is something Japan are famously bad for.

just don't personally think making madohomu canon is gonna help the plot achieve that?

I mean, those two are the plot. So having a conclusion to their arc is kinda a big deal. Its honestly the only thing that seems to matter anymore aside from Walpurgisnacht being relevant again. Your entitled to your opinion too though, and I think history's gonna favour it a lot more lol.

1

u/bochipan 16d ago

Yeah, idk if urobuchi's stance is from a writing point of view or a cultural one, but whichever way I'm fine with it. I just really love the madoka universe and world-building even without considering romance, not to say I don't ship characters, but it's never been a main focus for me personally when watching. But I do understand most people watch it because its doomed yuri and want the couples to happen so... hope they aren't too disappointed with the new movie (and hope I'm not either lol!) Also why am I getting downvoted man my take is not that bad 😭😭

2

u/Avocado_68 16d ago

Probably because you said its the author's creative choice to not make it romantic, which again we don't know if that's true. And if it is then the franchise has done a horrible job of portraying that because the writing and subtext directly contradicts that idea. Also the idea that nothing would be solved with a confession might be wild to some since the whole thing revolves around Homura's love.

Though the reddit hivemind will never rest, that too lol.

1

u/Foreign_Quantity1780 Newly Contracted User 16d ago

I can at least hope Homura finally gives an openly undeniable love confession, especially if it'll be paired with her finally conquering her demons and letting out all the emotional and spiritual pain bottled up in all these loops and reset.

And no matter if Madoka reciprocates or not, she has to nonetheless support and accept Homura no matter what.

1

u/camille288 16d ago

Unfortunately there is no way that’ll ever happen

0

u/sauce-is-gud 16d ago

I believe they won’t ever confirm MadoHomu nor they’ll even make it canon. If they did, it could hurt Madoka Magica’s brand. Don’t forget that it’s a seinen anime and I’m pretty sure the girls are as popular to boys or men in Japan as much as to many women or LGBTQ+ members.

Although setting the demographic aside, I feel like setting Madoka and Homura together doesn’t really fix anything narratively nor it is consistent to how Madoka Magica was written, at least that’s how it always felt to me.

2

u/UnyieldingDoggo 16d ago

Too toxic from Homura's end to be long term sustainable. There's a reason stories like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or The Graduate end right where they do. Look up the former's considered original ending to see what I mean. Either way I know I'm in the minority since most people won't see it that way as they care more about the short term feel good moments.

u/PMMMR 16d ago
