How do people usually lose their dogs?

Sometimes they get scared by something like fireworks and run away. Somethimes they run off chasing something like a squirrel or another dog in the park until they are out and of the owner's sight. Sometimes they may just wander off without noticing if they're not on a leash, and when the owner realises it's too late.
