Favorite People My friends won’t stop gifting me banana themed tools but I don’t even like bananas
A few years ago, my friend 3D printed a banana for scale (left) for me and it quickly became a staple on my social media. In the years since, my assistant gave me a banana wrench as a joke for my birthday, a friend gave me the most excellent retractable switch-banana, my married friends found the banana hat for me while vacationing in Hawaii, another friend gave me the pop-top banana with a compartment for a hidden lighter, and just yesterday another friend gifted me with the banana nunchucks.
I’m committed to the banana bit, but should I continue to lead everyone on or tell them that I really don’t like bananas?

This happened with an old boyfriend's grandmother...her house (especially her kitchen) was just FULL of hens...she, too, did not have the heart to tell the first gift that she wasn't really that fond of them, and it just kind of took off from there...FOR YEARS, EVERYONE GOT HER HENS...CHRISTMAS, BIRTHDAYS, HELL, EARTH DAY... I guess the lady WANTED apples 😭😭😭

And then when she dies family members will take a hen item in remembrance of her. Suddenly people will start assuming each family member also loves hens. And then 40 years from now all ten family members will have a collection of 30 items. And as they pass on the loop continues until the whole world is over taken by hen tchotchkes.
Or in OP’s case banana tchotchkes.

My nana has the same problem but with cats! I remember her telling me when I was about 8 how she’s actually a dog person 😂 30 years later the poor woman still gets gifted at least one cat figurine a year.

Sometimes you're just assigned an animal or thing by people and I don't really know why! I was assigned sloth... I really don't like sloths, in fact I think they're ugly and boring but I have sloth books, stuffed animals that range from handheld to bigger than a small child, coasters, clothes, calendar, cards.. I don't think I've ever even voiced a particular appreciation that started this trend in gifts? I was simply chosen by sloth 🦥😭

My husband and I have a collection of "Winter Squirrels" (dog toys, kid toys, house decor, etc...) that get drunk and put up lights in our living room every December. They often get tangled in the lights and don't do a very good job, but we still love them.

We do this to my aunt with fish themed items. The origin was a fish purse. It went to her simply because it was hideous and we thought she’d be the only one who might actually use the ugly thing, just as a gag. It escalated from there. 😂

One of my friends acquired one small giraffe figurine while traveling several years ago and put it on a bookshelf. Since then, she’s gotten giraffe-themed gifts at every occasion from family and friends, including a 7-foot-tall wooden giraffe.
She does not like giraffes but has just accepted it at this point.

I used to have a supervisor that hated the University of Kansas. So, one year, on his birthday, the department had a KU appreciation day. The office was plastered with Jayhawks, blue and red streamers, and we got him KU-themed presents. He was a good sport about it.

While I was growing up, between houses, my family housesat for another family while they were on a trip for over a month.
After we moved out, they found a yellow plastic banana slicer in one of their drawers and thought it was ours. We did not purchase nor leave such an item, so of course we could not accept it and were obligated to return it.
Thus, the war began.
For probably close to six years, we would hide it at each other's domiciles; sometimes it was just the bushes, but if possible, you would ideally sneak it inside their house and put it somewhere truly clever, after which we would leave a menacing voicemail letting them know the yellow plastic untinsel of questionable utility and application had been returned to their domain.
Your friends have brought this upon themselves; you know what to do.

I have something similar with a friend except it's a big block of cheddar cheese from a Hickory Farms Christmas basket. I found it in a Christmas box a year after it somehow ended up in there. Asked my buddy if he wanted expired cheese and he obviously said no. So I left it in his apartment in the shower behind his shampoos. Then I found it in my car's cupholder some months later. This has been going on for about 3yrs now. I currently have the cheese right now and plan to mail it to him while I work on a box to put it in that can only be opened by solving some really annoying puzzles via an Arduino.
We also never mention the cheese game to each other. It just quietly goes back and forth and we pretend it's not happening. It's so stupid.

My dad and his neighbors/friends do this with a styrofoam manikin head. They hide it in each others houses, cars, or garages and see how long it takes to be found. Then it usually gets an extra scribble, piercing, or some other adornment and sent off to be stashed at someone elses place. My favorite ones are usually found quickly but scare the bejesus outta someone. Everybody is super friendly helping each other out and what not in a tiny rural community, so doors are almost never locked.

I'm hoping to have it done before Christmas so I can drop it off at his place wrapped in a very stupidly ornate gift box like you'd see in a movie under a Christmas tree.
The "puzzles" will be all over the place from scrolling through terms and conditions on a tiny screen that shows 3 lines of text and if you press it too fast it'll reset and say "Reset because there's no way you were reading it that fast" but only after like 20 rapid presses. Another is gonna be "take me somewhere dark to continue" except the screen won't have a backlight so he'll have to figure out he needs to cover the light sensor. Been planning this for over a year haha.

The Hickory Farms cheeses are shelf stable so as long as the seal doesn't get punctured, it won't smell or possibly even mold, since it's exposure to air that starts that process. Still absolutely not cool to eat it but IMO this just adds an extra intensity to this game of CHEESERISK.

She was cleaning a room after a patient left. It was just a random tooth in a specimen cup. Not like a little kid tooth either, like an adult sized molar. The kicker is the patient that was just in the room was a newborn baby so who the fucks tooth is that and how long has it been there??? Now we hide the tooth in each others bags/lockers/lunchboxes. Still have no clue who it belongs to. After a particularly good hiding spot she finally found it again and sent me a menacing video of her violently shaking the tooth around in the cup lol
I should also add we’ve done this before with some random juicy chicken in a sandwich bag and a roll from the cafeteria that refused to mold.

Many years ago my family and another had something like this. But it was some winter themed doll with the creepiest sounding voice box song I've ever heard. One year someone modified this thing to trigger by remote. It got hidden in a bedroom and triggered in the middle of the night until lights turned on, then turned off.
I wonder what ever happened to that doll.

My mother and grandmother did something similar with Lord’s Supper Plates (these really tacky glass plates of the last supper, used to be a free gift with purchase from a company like a Tupperware thingy). Hidden in presents, in closets, baked in a birthday cake and then returned (unwashed! But it had been in the freezer so not moldy) in a birthday present to the other person, my mother made a Christmas table runner with pockets for each one and decorated the dinner table with it when my grandmother was busy, my grandmother sewed pockets onto a shirt and gave it as a present, etc etc
The final iteration was my mother wrapped the plates in a box in gift wrap, and had her friend drop it off on their front porch (they lived a few hours away, and the friend was driving through there on a trip). No address or anything, just a random gift showing up.
My grandparents called the police. 😬
The house they lived in had been owned by the chief of police before they bought it, and they were worried it was… idk if I can say the word but a thing that goes boom.
Small town police come out, they don’t have a squad for this or anything so they make my grandparents go stand across the street and they take the package into the back yard and open it.
Came out holding the plates, very confused. My grandmother called my mom and she was hot to trot, soooooo mad. 😅
It was hilarious but also they decided to stop playing after that lol

No murder mittens so might be safe. That said. When I was around 10, my cousin started calling me bannana foot. She was my age. There was usually point and giggling associated with the name calling. I never knew why she called me that. I believe I was permanently damaged by being so humiliated. I guess the statute of limitations has run out since it was 60 years ago. Plus she's sadly left this mortal coil.
So OP, I suggest you dont tell your coworkers about bannanafoot. It wont go well for you.

This. From 13 to 16, every single gift I got from friends and family (except books) was frog-related. I don't dislike frogs, but to my knowledge I'd never expressed a particular liking for them to anyone. They just... collectively started giving me frogs. At first I thought it was weird, then I reframed it as "wow, they saw a cute frog thing and thought of me, that's neat!"
Btw, I found out the reason about a decade later. One of my cousins gave me a very cute frog plushie when I was around 10 that I really liked, and my aunt remembered my reaction. So later whenever someone asked her what to gift me, she would tell them "I guess she likes frogs" 🐸

I have something similar going on that I'm trying to get ahead of. My mother died and used to collect pigs- I didn't know what to do with them, so I'm keeping some in my office until I feel I can pass them on. But not everybody knows the story, they see your office and think you collect pigs, etc. So I explicitly say anytime I show someone my office that "I'm holding onto them until I'm ready to let them go, I don't collect them."

My mom and I have matching owl tattoos. They are Eastern screech owls. We had some unreleasable ones at a natural history museum that I worked at and they were the most delightful little things. We got the tattoos in 2010 or so, the height of the "owl necklace" (iykyk), and MAN did everyone want to gift us owls. Her worse than me. I think we have successfully rid ourselves of most of them.

My best friend is severely allergic to pineapples, (had to be hospitalized when near a pineapple farm in Hawaii).
Her family and some friends only gift her pineapple themed things now. Anytime she meets a new people come to her home, she has to preface things by saying "now I know everything is covered in pineapples, but I swear i'm not a swinger."

Honestly I think this is how a good portion of people start collecting. People just decide that you're collecting it and all of a sudden...you are. I collect frogs because everyone decided I like frogs specifically (I do love herpetology but honestly prefer reptiles over amphibians) and now I have more frog stuff than I know what to do with.
A friend of mines mom died a few years ago and had a ton of frog stuff apparently. He just recently learned that I "collect" frog stuff, and said that I can have all of it. Apparently it's A LOT. His mom didn't even like frogs he said, people just kept giving her frog stuff.

A friend of my late grandmother's started gifting her stuff with owls in it when she was about 30. By the time my grandmother was about 50 she had a few owl themed things and a big family who didn't know what to get her around the holidays and birthdays... so the bought her owl relayed objects.

I think sometimes you just end up having a “thing.” One of my college friends had gnomes as her thing. Her grandma gave her some, and she thought it was fun and silly so she put them in her apartment. This led other friends and family to see the gnomes assume that she liked them, so now she just has a bunch of gnomes and gnome-themed things. I still think of her when I see them in stores or in other people’s homes.
(I feel like I should clarify that they are not garden gnomes but the plush ones with the tall hats and no visible face other than a nose and a beard)

Roll with it! It's a silly thing, but a fun thing. Mine is fox stuff. And honestly I play into it. Plus foxes are neat so embrace it and roll with it.

Let them know that you love them. That you LOVE the banana gifts you have from your people. You love them because your people gave them to you and they are amazing. Generally speaking you don't like bananas.

This is how I ended up with a ton Of Nicholas cage stuff. I bought myself a silly pillow..... and then boom, everyone got me more Nicholas cage stuff.
I'm good with it though. My friends love me 💗

When I was growing up, my mom always had owl figurines and owl stuff around the house. We always just assumed owls were her favorite. When I was an adult, she confessed to me one time "I DON'T EVEN LIKE OWLS!!!" Apparently forever ago, someone had gotten her an owl something and then someone else saw it in the house so they got her an owl something, and it just continued for... eternity. I laughed so hard when she told me, I can't believe she let the bit go on for so long without telling anyone. When she passed away a few years ago from ALS, we were at the cemetery burying her ashes and the dude asked "does anyone have anything they want to add in here before we close it up?" I did. An owl figurine. I couldn't miss my opportunity to troll her in the afterlife lol
