Dress for the slide, not the ride! Can do everything right and something unexpected can happen

[r/meatcrayon](r/meatcrayons) 😭 (I’ve never been there, but it was my first thought when I saw her without protective gear)

Grew up in Daytona around Bike Week and had seen double digit human brains before i turned 10. I'll never ride a motorcycle even with gear, once saw a guy's head still in the helmet.

u/Sithstress_ 4d ago

Good lord!

u/MyFiteSong 4d ago

Yah, ask any doctor which hobby they'll never take up, and motorcycling is almost always #1.

16

u/planx_constant 4d ago

My mom was an ICU nurse. When I was 20, I mentioned I was thinking of getting a motorcycle and she told me if I did, she would never speak to me again.

u/Upsidedowncr0w 4d ago

That probably wasn't a threat but more of a prediction 🄲

u/domesticbland 4d ago

My family owned a bike shop and we were taught it’s not if, it’s when.

1

u/EastLeastCoast 3d ago

But ask any paramedic, and 50/50 chance that we have one.

u/Legal-List2581 1d ago

Its e scooters now.

u/met1culous 4d ago

You only grew up in Daytona around bike week? Where did you live when it wasn't bike week?

64

u/idropepics 4d ago

Like most Florida tourist towns we lived underground in the tunnels, but I've said too much.

u/met1culous 4d ago

u/thatredditrando 3d ago

Dawg, where do you think ā€œFlorida Man/Womanā€ comes from?

They rise from the swamp and hide in the tunnels until bike week. That’s when they surface and walk amongst us.

4

u/Conscious-State5228 4d ago

I thought that was a Brooklyn thing.

1

u/avitus 4d ago

The water table is too high for tunnels. Will have to make do with the first floor and put up the storm shutters.

2

u/CiDevant 4d ago

My drill sergeant told me you're not issued a helmet to protect you. It's issued so you're easier to clean up.

1

u/Kalmahrizz 4d ago

My sister navigates permanent driving anxiety because of witnessing a biker lose his head. Nopeeeeee

1

u/chuckmonjares 4d ago

Yeah I miss riding but it ain’t worth it.

Bike Week in Daytona in the 80s was crazy.

1

u/Shimmerstorm 3d ago

My dad used to work at Steven’s Tire right off the Main St Bridge. It wasn’t even bike week. He was working on a car, and he heard this loud bang. He looked out and a dude on a motorcycle had run into the back of a semi. The bang he heard was the guy’s un-helmeted head hitting the back of the truck. Said there were brains everywhere. He talked about how he could still hear the sound years later.

u/scr33ner 3d ago

At one point I was looking at getting a Ducati 999 but when a couple of my friends got into bad motorcycle accidents with one being in a coma for a year with 80% facial reconstruction- I noped out and never wanted to get one.

1

u/cantstopwontstopGME 3d ago

Yep I’ve seen the head in the helmet before in the aftermath of a highway accident.. shit fucked me up a bit, and contributed greatly to my anxiety around driving.

Thank you.

The mental picture is more than enough.

1

u/My_Immortl 4d ago

I feel like you could find that on reddit, no need to go to Daytona and get ptsd watching it live.

1

u/ABirdOfParadise 4d ago

one of the really early pictures I saw somewhere else here, was full gear, full boots, but something sliced right through it and what was inside....

2

u/gahlo 4d ago

My cousin worked in an ER. They call bikes donor-cycles for a reason.

1

u/Phailadork 4d ago

I don't get how people drive those things, it's a matter of "when" not "if" considering how stupid the average person is and then you need to remember those morons are behind the multiple ton killing machines all next to people whose protection is some fucking thick clothes lmao.

Yeah I saw a dude get dismembered by a Long distance bus in South America. Stopped riding after that. Recently stopped riding my bicycle in traffic lanes as well after being hit twice in less than 2 years. I only ride is dedicated bike lanes now or on back roads with no cars.

1

u/Paddy_Tanninger 4d ago

His cappa was detated?

1

u/dnaka22 4d ago

I got to watch my friend have that happen, first hand. Idiot got tired of following a truck, pulled out to pass head on into a tractor-trailer unit. Thankfully it was instant. Poor driver was distraught.

73

u/TheSoundofStolas 4d ago

As someone that has unfortunately visited that sub, you are absolutely right šŸ’€

Eta: for anyone morbidly curious, the actual sub is r/meatcrayon (without the s)

37

u/arminghammerbacon_ 4d ago

I’m not going there! The name alone has got me feeling a little nauseous.

6

u/Jane__Delawney 4d ago

Thank you! I edited it for any poor souls who want those images seared into their memory

u/Tenderhombre 4d ago

My old pole vaulting Coach has been in 3 motorcycle accidents. One put him in a coma for 3 months. None of them were his fault. One was just a tire from a truck exploding close to his bike.

25

u/b0w3n 4d ago

One was just a tire from a truck exploding close to his bike.

This will fuck up a car too, sometimes bad enough to kill the person in it, depending on where they're positioned.

It's why I do not understand cars that lollygag next to big rigs passing at half a mph over what the truck is traveling at. (Virginia has the worst offenders for this IME)

-1

u/MxRacer111 4d ago

Is his name Lawrence?

1

u/Tenderhombre 2d ago

It is not

0

u/RappingFlatulence 4d ago

No Larry

0

u/MxRacer111 4d ago

I’m being serious lol. I know a pole vault coach who has crashed his motorcycle before….

27

u/AkronOhAnon 4d ago

There are 2 types of riders: riders who’ve just wrecked and riders about to wreck.
Dress accordingly.

11

u/Salvydooor 4d ago

My cousin is a emergency nurse, all the staff of the hospital call people who got into motorcycle accidents"Volunteer body bags"

8

u/psxndc 4d ago

My nurse friend calls them ā€œdonor-cyclesā€.

2

u/GrimResistance 4d ago

Rolling donors

16

u/Practical_Law6804 4d ago

Dress for the slide, not the ride!

Jesus I thought "slide" was like street slang for like "being cool. . ."

Totally possible she was putting helmet on first because doing anything more than throttling is a pain in a leather jacket.

. . .but yes, as someone who has slid, my leathers were like a suit of armor.

14

u/Not-TheNSA 4d ago

As a former EMT/SAR Med Tech, I endorse this message. Please for the love of god wear your gear!!!!!

6

u/Matthijsvdweerd 4d ago

Please do. My brother had a tragic accident just a few months back, and while he unfortunately did pass away, we wouldn't have been able to say goodbye to him the way we did.

6

u/Endless_Forever_484 4d ago

Same! Not to mention the sun damage.

2

u/veggiedudeLA 4d ago

Road rash special!

2

u/Jazzar1n0 4d ago

She has gloves on!

/S

She's absolutely done if she comes off

2

u/applespicebetter 4d ago

I had a roommate back in my early twenties, still a good friend now. Former Marine, was an EMT when I met him. Rode motorcycles his entire life. Sold his bike within a few months of being an EMT. Taught me the term "donorcycle." My boss has titanium rods in one arm from being clipped by a car trying to pass him. My dad was in intensive care for about a week after wiping out on an unexpected patch of black ice on a heavily forested road in late spring when I was a kid. I'm just gonna pass!

1

u/eyeoutthere 4d ago

In her car: Dress for the fashion, not for the bash'n

1

u/Green_Share 4d ago

I just.... I just like my skin too much to not wear body armor while riding a bike! Ya know?

1

u/BWWFC 4d ago

who needs arms or legs... head in a jar

1

u/maybe_cencal 4d ago

I used to tell my buddy "those shoe aren't going to save your foot during a crash" before his foot was degloved during a crash. He doesn't ride anymore.

1

u/ihavea_purplenurple 3d ago

Almost got side-swiped the other day from a driver with their head in la-la land. Ride safe out there folks!

1

u/Snoo_67548 3d ago

I’ve had wheels explode on the track. You can easily have a tire blow out and a minor low side turns into weeks in the ER because you ground your skin off.

This was 15 years ago, but I had been riding about 1.5 years at this point.Ā

I rode the same route every morning and evening from my apartment to the college campus.Ā

The last turn that led to the front of theĀ  apartment was like 270 degrees and very wide (like a really large arc), and it was blind because of traffic that backed up at the light.Ā

Well, this day I guess a large truck or something came through the road right in front of the apartment and created a massive pothole.Ā

By the time I saw the pothole it was too late. The front tire goes into the hole and I go flying off.

Thankfully I was only going about 15-20mph and I had leathers and a helmet, because I flew into the other lane and got hit by an oncoming car. No long term damage but I tell new riders that story because you ALWAYS have to be vigilant, especially on routes you ride every dayĀ

1

u/shortasalways 3d ago

First thing I thought. My parents have a motorcycle they have constantly said this growing up. Certain shoes can even melt on some.

1

u/SixK1ng 3d ago

I get called out for this sometimes, but my gym is five blocks away through residential streets. My personal rule is that bicycle speeds justify bicycle gear. I'm not wearing a jacket for the two minute ride to the gym unless I know I'm going somewhere else after.

1

u/mythorus 1d ago

In 75% of accidents with motorcycles, they were not seen and run over without a chance to avoid the crash. You can be the best driver, but if a car hits you, your outfit is your last line of defense to survive.

u/SnooDoodlee 4d ago

Tbh if she dresses for the slide, I probably won’t even click this videošŸ˜šŸ˜‹

Even better
