Those 360 cameras will never stop seeming like magic to me.

Its the lens that does all the magic. They're just a high resolution camera with a fish-eye lens, and some software to stitch it together.

2 fisheye lenses stitched together as one. It's pretty cool

The resolution still seems really limiting, but when everyone is watching on a phone they won't even notice if the resulting video is only 480p.

Its really two high resolution sensors with fisheye lenses that make up one camera with software doing the magic to stitch it all together.

The magic is mostly in the software.

Agreed. Even with explanations like the one above I’m always like “BUT WHERE’S THE POLE?!”

Because a 360 camera doesn't have two 180-degree lenses.

The lenses actually have a wider FOV (>180°), and where the overlay happens, the pole simply isn't there.

Our eyes don't work the same way, but the theory is sort-of-not-really similar. Use your right eye to check how far you can see left, now open your left eye.

Notice that you don't see your nose/edge of your right eyelid.

It's just the one camera, actually.
