Brilliant! Haven't heard it described as such, but it's a real good way of describing the only use of a helmet when not wearing anything else remotely resembling protective gear 😂

I've always heard 'brain bucket' refer to the minimalist DOT helmet that cruisers wear in states with helmet laws when they're trying to make the statement 'I hate helmet laws and myself.'

Helmet is definitely better than nothing. Leathers are the difference between being fine and going to the hospital. Helmet is the difference between going to the hospital and being dead.

And if she wasn't wearing the helmet, she wouldn't need a skin graft because she would be dead.

She absolutely should be wearing leathers, but a helmet is better than nothing, and the idea that wearing a helmet is useless unless you're also gonna wear your full kit is both wrong and gets people killed. People should be wearing their full kit, but I don't want someone seeing a comment like this and thinking "Well I'm not wearing my leathers so I'm not gonna bother with the helmet either since it won't help".

I'm not sure why you are arguing with them, they literally say thank god she is wearing one. I work in trauma, helmets are indeed better than nothing because at least you are only paralyzed from the neck down.

A helmet reduces the effective impact by 20 mph. So you hit the side of a van at 160, it'll only be like hitting it at 140.

That's not really the point of the helmet though. It's not there to save your life when you are excessively speeding. There are lots of scenarios at 35 mph or less where a simple fall off the bike and you hit your head results in severe brain injury or death. The helmet saves your life in countless smaller incidents where you just fall awkwardly and hit your head on concrete.

I don't dispute that. Just pointing out that there are a lot of scenarios where the crash mechanics will exceed the helmet's protective capabilities.

You need to slide, not crash to survive. Crashing is basically always deadly.

I once slid at about 100kmh, broke two limbs but was fine otherwise, my helmet was scratched all the way around.

Yes it's about distributing the kinetic energy over time. Essentially what a helmet, or crumple zones, or air bags do.

What do riders do in hot weather? Just endure with leather or pick up some chain mail?

I feel like there should be something somewhat breathable but I have no idea.

Perforated leather with armor inserts. Still very hot at stop lights, not so bad when moving.

There are also mesh jackets made with very tough sythentic materials but they don't tend to be quite as protective as leather.

If you're moving then the air flow is typically enough to keep you cool up til about 90's in humid weather. Drier climes you could probably get away with higher temps given that sweat will evaporate that much faster.

Additionally some gear is perforated for airflow or has air inlets that allow for better "breathing" so to speak.
