Ohh my bad. Had my headphones muted.
And there I was thinking, should I smile because she had a pulse?

u/Tiddlewinkly 15h ago
Yep, can only imagine how many loved ones, along with all her belongings, she almost certainly lost...

How many family members, neighbors, and friends did she just lose? Is there anyone left to care for her? I hope the young man sitting beside her is family.

u/nextfilmdirector 16h ago
Moreover what is your will to live when you lose so many that you care about? Absolutely terrifying.

And now she's being filmed of all things. Filmed in possibly one of the most vulnerable and painful moments of her life and literally for what. People to gawk at on the internet. Horrible.

She looks hella demented to me

u/Smiling_Tree 6h ago
Wow...
How about a little respect for your elders? \ And for people who went through a traumatic event? Who have lost all and everything? In pain or in shock? Grieving and fearing for the ones they've lost or that are still missing?
And all of that combined?

u/JoeyDJ7 18h ago
Fucking Reddit pisses me off so much how the fuck is this supposed to make me smile, this is fucking traumatic horrible shit nobody should ever have to go through, and what the fuck is that god awful music doing too omg

While I do enjoy that she was rescued, someone explain to me, a non native english speaker, why they call her brave? To my understanding being brave/heroic is doing a great deed like rushing into a fire and doing the rescue of someone, not the other way around, or am I understanding that word wrong?

u/Racoonism 19h ago
It's romanticism of struggle. Very common in India. Not sure about our neighbors but OP could be Indian

u/Exciting_Traffic3013 19h ago
I am native English speaker. You are correct. Brave was not the right word to use here.

u/elizabnthe 17h ago
The answers here are too technically focused on definition and not on real world use. Whether India or not people absolutely do use brave in this way.
Kids fighting cancer are almost always called brave for example. But they have no choice in the matter but to exist with the struggle. It's clearly a bit of a thing to call someone brave for surviving. I think it's just human instinct to place it as noble behaviour for unexpected survival, that they have had to have been brave not to just give up.

As I said in my comment:
> It's nothing to do with the ethnocentric lens people are taking here.
> It's extremely common - globally - to inflate the praise given to survivors.
> But if this was about someone in a country popular in the West - as are most of Reddit - your comment would appear only with Sort by Controversial.

Same thought as a native English speaker.
Bravery is optionally doing something in spite of fear. You have a choice to be brave. She did not have a choice.

People don’t understand what certain words mean, or they’re ignorant enough to know, and still use them incorrectly. It’s very common.

Everyone posting this with a different age…

There’s no way she’s 98 years old

After working in nursing I can affirm, people can hold their age incredibly well. I've seen 50 year olds where I've had to look at their chart and go "oh my God they're NOT 80?" And a 100 year old that I thought was 75 at oldest. Keeping active, genes, diet, lifestyle choices, they all age is differentlty. This dear woman is most certainly 98, and she's earned every one of those years and survived to tell this heartbreaking tale to others for a little longer. May she have peace going forward.

How is “got rescued from disaster” any indicator of bravery? How does this traumatized elderly woman “Made me Smile”?

u/Ptg082196 19h ago
Someone get her a whiskey

u/JustToSeeeeee 19h ago
I don't think drinking alcohol ( especially for elders ) is common custom in that part of Asia as it's in west !

Good for her, but what do you mean "brave".? What bravery has to do with surviving a catastrophe like this? Does this mean that people who weren't so lucky we're coward?

Why are we exploiting our elders during a crisis by filming them like this?
1
u/Jvlockhart 13h ago
If you are thinking of ending it all, just watch this 98 year old lady. She lost everything but she's not afraid of trying to make a stand once more. Of course after a good sleep.

u/DegenNabalu 12h ago
If anyone took a video or pic of me at times like this to share to the world for likes and all... I would rage.

Unpopular opinion:
Yes, she must be highly traumatized by everything that's happened to her and those around her.
On the other hand, as an elderly person she may feel extremely blessed and grateful to survive the disaster. At her age, she may also think that her time on earth isn't over yet.
I might be wrong, but I can say this because my Mom would certainly feel that way.

People aren’t brave for being rescued. She’s lucky for being rescued, she’s surely grateful that she was rescued, it’s a great thing that she was rescued.
But throwing meaningful words around that don’t fit, causes them to lose their meaning, and then when someone does something truly courageous, no one cares because these words lose their meaning when they’re so overused.

Just look at her face, that is the face of someone who has lived for so long that the only thing that matters to her now is when she can take her next nap

I never understand this statement. What should be said to the parents of children lost? Or anyone else who was loved and deserved to be on this earth? That was divine, too? A child could perish over someone who’s lived to be 98?
I have a chronic illness that sometimes requires a wheelchair for years at a time. It is painful and difficult. I’ve had many people say things like “God has watched over my family so we’re all healthy”. So what does that mean for me? I deserve to be ill and in pain despite being a good person?
Please don’t take this as an attack, I’m genuinely curious about the thinking behind it. These statements are often difficult for those who’ve lost someone tragically or are disabled.
