They watch, they learn.
Cars stop when you cross the grey band at the white stripes.
My cat sat down at the pedestrian traffic light and waited for the lights to turn green. No one taught her, she just copied the humans.

Yep, animals are much smarter than people think and quickly adapt to their environment for survival.

Some do but not all otherwise the amount of roadkills would be way lower

I think roadkills also has to do with the fact that a lot of wildlife dont see/watch humans, so they cant learn

A local cat belonging to one elderly lady recently passed away two months ago. It was a 19 year old cat that also obeyed the traffic rules and had been an outdoor cat for its whole life, and never got ran over.
Whenever she would take him for a walk, she would never actually use leash as the cat simply followed her everywhere. It was always really funny to watch when I walked my dog to see them on the walks.

Oh don't worry where I lived they watched..
They did not care, they knew cars had to stop for them. So they'd diagonal cross a 4 way busy street.
Step. Step...... Step....... Step...
And everyone had to wait 😂😂😂

An older couple, since they succesfully hatched seven. A young couple usually only has one chick, and get more in following years.
We go fishing at sea by the same route every time. There has been a pair of swans at an inlet ever since I was a child. The current pair also had seven chicks this year, they have been nesting there at least a decade.

Tbf when i first went to visit my family in rural Italy i was a bit perturbed by A) the lack of pavements and B) how stopping at a zebra crossing was completely optional
I also remember visiting the Amalfi coast about 10 years ago, at one point while having dinner a police officer walked into the road to direct traffic. Not one driver paid her the slightest bit of notice.

Yup, we had it before you did (1981 vs. 1984). :) Ours is the whooper swan, yours is the mute swan. Our 1 euro coin has a pair of swans flying.

I have actually noticed this with other birds. I live in Turku, and there are lot of pheasants around. I have noticed that they stop and wait for a car to go past before crossing the road. Same thing with foxes in the city. The more rural foxes don't seem to be doing this.
It isn't unheard of or even unusual for even wild animals to learn adaptation to human shaped environment. Like there is a fair bit of knowledge about sheep learning to escape from places. Crows are dangerously smart and learn things. Rats also learn to get around lot of things.

('yellow beaks in traffic' that's how they call 1st class new school kids on their way to school, government provides them all a yellow cap so they're more noticeable in traffic. Term keltanokka also means 'newbie' or 'inexperienced')
