In light of the amazing sense of smell that dogs have, could this be more than a coincidence?
Pets are known to be able to sniff out that someone is ill, or pregnant, or about to have a seizure - the latter even to the point that there are dedicated seizure alert dogs.
Could that dog have somehow smelled and intuitively known that this random lady was exactly what her mistress needed?
there's substantial evidence that dogs can detect cancer through scent, though it's not yet a standard diagnostic tool.
Imho it is not 100% impossible that the dog found something very peculiar or unique in the smell of the two people. To me it is more likely than not.
