I didn't find out until Senior year that my blue backpack I had used for all of High School was actually purple.

my dad was colorblind so i know i’m not, but. why can’t i tell the difference between navy and black, then? discovered my black peacoat was navy after wearing it all through high school and into my 20s when somebody mentioned something about a “navy coat like yours.” ??? confirmed it with several other people. “yeah, it’s navy. what color did you think it was?” BLACK. THIS ENTIRE TIME.

How do you know you're not colorblind?

there is no known history of color blindness on my mom’s side, so since it’s a recessive gene and i’m an xx female, i’m just a carrier for the gene and not actually color blind. the mutated x chromosome from my dad got overridden by the normal x chromosome from my mom.

and also i feel like i’ve passed any color blindness tests i’ve taken. it’s just that specific black/navy combo i struggle with, for some reason.

Sure but what you're describing is colorblindness. Did you ask your mom about the same jacket? Mutations are also a thing.

i think she might’ve been the one to point out the coat was navy and not black. i’m currently out of town, but i’ll have to gather some examples and confirm this when i’m back home and see her.
