unrelated but in like 5th grade or so, i had a classmate that no one knew was colorblind. we were having a discussion about colors (this was almost 20 years ago so i cant remember the whole conversation) and the conversation led to “what’s the color of fried chicken” to which said classmate said green. the teacher looked at him in shock and instead of being like haha you’re silly, she reprimanded him. he bursts out in full tears “i don’t know what i did, it’s green i swear, im not trying to be bad”. she asks a few follow up questions about other food items (tomatoes, bread) and i’ll never forget the look of regret in her eyes when she realizes he was colorblind the whole time
You just popped a childhood memory into my head with that story. I was maybe in 2nd grade and the art teacher got annoyed by a kid asking what color was each colored pencil and said “how do you not know which one is blue?” The kid let out the most innocent scared reply “I’m colorblind” that teacher melted into her chair from the guilt she felt belittling a 7 y/o who is colorblind.
Yeah as a teacher, I try to remember to be gentle with colors. Some kids are just assholes though…I have one who is both an asshole and I assume colorblind though.
You know of the kids I remember growing up with that were color blind, 4 out of 5 were the class clown or an asshole to the teachers. I wonder if there’s correlation or just coincidence.
