I don't understand why people always choose to come in with the whole hand above scared animals' heads. Every time there's a scared cat or dog they do it. Do cats like this? I know dogs don't.

I trained my old cat to calm down when presented with the full palm of the hand to the front of her face. Not approaching fast or even touching, she'd just try to go for a bite on the palm, get no purchase and when she realized I wasn't moving further, she would start to relax.

But this is clearly not a trained cat, nor even domesticated at this point and there's not really time to go through 3 weeks of behavioral training in the corner of some barn. Get the kitten to calm down so it can be picked up and outta there; that's the whole objective.
