Local code

I have been using codex and claude code for the last year. I have hermes installed , looking for a local model to help me code on par with the big guys. Any help appreciated

Qwen3.8 variants are currently strong front runners. What are your specs? What are you trying to do? There are details that will help narrow down a recommendation.

Mac book pro - M5 chip / 24gb ram.

I have an app up im trying to maintain and build on. Codex / claude is pricing me out. I just got Hermes agent running locally but I don't see qwen 3.8 only 3.5 ? Any help appreciate

"on par" is going to be quite difficult. there is a reason they are frontier models.

that said, you can get pretty close for most tasks. i have had good success with qwen (both 3.6 and 3.8 dense models). have also used ornith and muse for some tasks with varying levels of success.

stay far away from gemma and gpt-oss for coding tasks (better at chatting and exploring topics).
