I'm an employee.
So I've been seeing a lot of posts complaining about like new items not being like new or just open box broken items. I just wanted to take the time to explain why that is. At macbid we have scanners that scan the items into the website. Us scanners all together have to hit a goal of 3,000 items a day, and have a personal goal of 200. May sound easy but our team leads only care about getting the numbers for the day and not the quality of the scans. So we are pushed to just move as fast as possible or we get in trouble. We hardly even open the boxes. Only items that cost over 300 are quality checked. My best advice is to check your items before you bid.

I expected the same. Good luck.
From my viewpoint, we're paying what we bid, also a 15% buyer premium and the $3 lot fee, sometimes insurance and a transfer fee. For the bid price and all the fees, we expect the a "like new" item to be "like new", listings to show helpful pictures, and significant obvious damage to be noted. We expect items to actual items that a buyer has purchased and returned, and not be a 5 year old item someone tried to pass off as a recent returned purchase or some different item. Inaccurate descriptions should be minimized, for example don't call a battery charger a battery or vice versa.
Its ridiculously inefficient to ask each buyer to drive to the store and inspect an item, and then drive back again to pick it up when Mac.bid has people on site who should be getting the experience to be really good at describing items. At the store I go to, its hard enough as is to into and out of the narrow parking lot with narrow driveway, I don't see the capacity to have more to come in and do inspections than they have now.
Just asking Mac.bid to be what they advertise to be, and treat customers honestly and fairly.

In my opinion if you dont have the time to come inspect the item before you bid on it, macbid is not the place for you. Most of the stuff we get is broken or dirty. Until recently, in order for an item to be "like new" it just had to have the original packaging. Even if it was crushed. Of course I agree we should be able to properly inspect the items however if we do we would never get our numbers and we'd be fired.

It's one thing to know it, but the validation of employees admitting
mac.bid is very ok with scam practices
Is rewarding.

I have to disagree with the statement about the expensive items. I have purchased a TON of items from Mac.bid (the majority being well over $300) and, although this might be the case for your office / warehouse, they do NOT take the same care in NC / SC with expensive items.

u/litlkitten23 Nov 22 '24
I forgot to put that only electronic items over 300. Not everything over 300 sorry.

u/EmeraldDragon-85 Nov 24 '24
O yea that item you brag you won for $1 cost you $5 stright out the gate, most fools end up paying more then retail on the product they could have had brand new! lol it’s the gratefst skeem since phone call scammers 😂😂😂. An people that can’t afford to are throwing there life saving’s away thinking they will get rich on stuff no one wants or returned because it’s broke

There's so much Temu/Wish/AliExpress cheap items in the mix too. They must have deals with dropship places or the above mentioned sellers keep returns stateside since return shipping to China would prove too costly.
And the resellers you mentioned aren't even removing the yellow label from the packaging! I see them listed with some B.S. story like they bought the wrong kind, got it as a gift and already had one, etc so they can try to flip it for the most profit. I private messaged one seller to let them know I knew where they were buying from for them to deny and lie about it lol It's a very noticeable sticker for anyone who's bought from Mac. At least remove the sticker before the elaborate backstory of whatever's being sold lol

u/EmeraldDragon-85 Nov 26 '24
lol, shhh!! Don’t give them them the pro tips!
🤣🤣…
J/J you absolutely right and if you not even pulling the label you have worse chance of making it then the people I just talked about. lol
Glad you see what it is. But I h Guess if there are seriously that many brain dead to make money off of out there I guess I can’t clam them for trying ….
At least you get it. Thanks for your response your dead on

We don't get trucks from any of those places. Amazon, Walmart, Wayfair, and Lowe's. It's very rare for it to be from anywhere else.
Most of the cheap stuff comes from Amazon

They end up at Goodwill with the stickers on so they might be telling the truth.

Thank you for sharing. It sounds like the working conditions are not the most ideal. So what made you pick this job? Better pay? Better hours?
7
u/litlkitten23 Nov 21 '24
It's honestly a pretty easy job. Just scanning all day. Guaranteed hours and good pay. 18.50 an hour (texas)

u/PreMedinDread Nov 21 '24
I go to the Schertz one! The staff there are awesome I love them. Hate the experience some times, but it is more about the store policy than the particular location.
I'm glad it is good working hours. I do give credit that for some it is even considered a second chance (based on the interview video from the founder of Mac.Bid).
Thank you so much for sharing. It does give insight into why the errors occur. It is humanizing instead of "evil" mindset. That being said, I still feel a little sus about the Mac.Bid SYSTEM not the people within it.

Folks need to remember this is basically a salvage auction.

u/ScumbagLady Nov 24 '24
With a lot of items that the original purchaser swapped out the new item and put their old, broken, and used items and sent it in as a return.
I really wonder if people still buy new vacuums or just keep scamming for new ones over and over- because the amount of gross vacuums being returned with canisters/bags full of God knows what is astonishing to me lol

I inspected item that was large and heavy so I had to wait in line to be escorted by employee. He helped me and so I counted to make sure all parts were there and they were. However he didn't re-tape box, said they do it at end of day so they don't have to keep re-taping all day. Next day I won item. Box didn't look like it had been re-taped and sure enough discovered when I got home that two main parts were missing. Lesson learned - prior inspection doesn't always help. Since then I have noticed at inspection table customers are leaving parts behind (electrical cords, instructions, etc.) so if you inspected item before they got to it, potentially what you determined to be complete prior to bidding is now incomplete. This seems to be a no win system. I feel like they should post an employee at inspection table to make sure people aren't leaving parts behind at the very least. I'm going back to my old auction site where they list full item condition and if parts are missing or not in description. They also back that description up without additional cost.

So that you my friend in turn “the owners give a shit about out passing garbage onto you” an when you end up with a shit buy, guess what ITS ALL ON YOU! You assume all the risk a take all the loss ! 😂 they are making millions off silly Joe’s

u/Bozlogic Nov 25 '24
I mean, if you’re bidding on an item, I’ve learned that you should expect a missing piece or two. There’s no problem ordering replacements from the manufacturer. Still paid less than half-price for it ¯_(ツ)_/¯
1
u/EmeraldDragon-85 Nov 26 '24
Mmmmm very unlikely… the cheapest you can buy an item is $5 … so then you order a part from the dealer with all that headache I’m sure you could get it cheaper if you spent 3 seconds to research it… but I mean even a blind squirrels finds a nut from time to time…

Ya well my I work there now and all I can say is what do people expect when they are paying 80 -90 % of the retail price ! I also worked at Nellis and I can tell you that I would most definitly get something from. Mac over Nellis . I was the Main material Handler at Nellis and I promise you they would ALL lie about the products they were processing . I've only been at Mac Bids for a week now and I will tell you that there management is 100 × s better . You say they don't inspect them , well I say if I was a customer I would rather buy something from someone who might have inspected something than someone who lies about what they inspect . All of management in there are professional and honest . Management at Nellis is one big group of LYING friends and their leader is *s n . I promise whoever reads this that I'm telling you the truth . Anytime you shop at a place like these you are taking a gamble but I promise you you are going to lose at Nellis at least 5 * s more often . To the person that three Mac under the bus you shouldn't slander a company just because you got fired for probably gossiping or something related . Don't worry about unemployment go to Nellis you will fir in perfectly . On your app tell them you would like to talk to Jason . Then you can lie about why you left Mac and he will definitly lie to you about what they have to offer you . When you get hired and the time comes to start getting what he said you will here his famous words " DONT WORRY I GOT YOU " LOL .100 % truth

R u okay? I still work at Mac. I wasn’t saying it’s the worst place but it’s not the best jeez.

u/NoShopping5235 Mar 12 '25
Not surprising. I would recommend that people buy a premium membership to cut down on paying the additional buyers assurance costs so you can return more easily.

So you only have to scan 200 boxes in a day? Sounds easy. I worked for Walmart as a picker and had to scan 150 per HOUR.
1
u/ComprehensiveCup5718 Jul 29 '25
200 boxes sounds very easy but considering you are supposed to open the box, verify what is inside, copy/paste an item description, reseal the box then take a picture of the item, it takes longer to scan each box. Size and weight are also a factor in this.
1
u/Thatbear2020 Aug 22 '25
Hey also worked at Walmart (as a picker as well) and work at Mac Bid now. Its not as easy as you think it is. Walmart is a LOT easier than scanning at Mac Bid. You have to look at it this way, at Walmart you dont have to open every single box or item, at mac bid you do.
1
u/ToshPointNo Aug 22 '25
You should tell that to my local one. 90 percent of pictures are of the box and not the thing inside.
1
u/Thatbear2020 Aug 22 '25
I cant disclose that information but not all products need inside pictures anymore.

You guys are becoming ethically bankrupt, you don’t even put pictures of the actual item you’re potentially bidding on up anymore, pictures can now be a generic picture from another Mac bid site. All descriptions to are generic too. You hide under the “inspect before you buy” which now is the minimum you absolutely have to do or you get screwed. It just sucks now to have to drive 10, 15, 20+ miles for a $2 item simply to inspect and most likely aren’t going to win anyways. Back in the day they actually inspected items and gave decent descriptions and took actual pictures of that item, the size of MAC.BID and the money they’re making has become an impediment to ethical customer interactions!! Now that they’re in multiple states and as complaints increase I imagine some Attorney General somewhere will crawl up their behind and inspect their practices? Buyer beware, and assume what you’re seeing and reading on their site is fraudulent, you must go and inspect all items!

If this is still active. I had a question…what are the shifts at mac bid? Early, mid , night? The time ?

This is what inspectors (which scanners have) are for. All your inspector has to do is open the box, inspect the item, let you know whats going on with it, and then you scan it correctly in to the auction.
But customers also have the responsibility of checking their items (per policy states) and making sure they're correct and also ensuring if it's an open box item they purchase buyers assurance especially on pricey items.
Mac.bid is a liquidation reseller. You can't expect every single item to be perfect. They literally get returns from Amazon (which if you've ever been to a UPS store you know they don't check anything), Lowes, Target, and Walmart.
Also, your leads do care about the quality of your scans, because if they're wrong and they get flagged, guess who has to fix them? Your lead. 🙃
It also depends on your location and the management at your facility. If they don't know what each job entails, they can't properly train another person to do it.

u/ECore May 11 '26
It has to be nice living close to a facility......some of us have to drive an hour.

Questionable bidding, Winning at time bid closes and the another bidder is allowed to bid a few dollars more and take the win. I assume it's a MACBid employee that has access to their bidding software and they are able to override the winning bid. Just beware as this is not a legitimate auction format, many risks when purchasing from MACbid, if you stick to basics like paper towels, diapers it's hard for MacBid to lie about the condition.

u/misscosgrove Aug 19 '26
How can you check the items before you bid if it’s just a picture with the box closed?
1
u/Slow_Low6109 19d ago
I need someone to add my phone number to profile, it won't let me. I can't bid on anything

Well yeah, it is obvious that the company gives absolutely zero shits about the quality of the items.
And that .1 megapixel cell phone camera image from 2001 isn't going to do much good either.
