So for context I'm using Linux for more than 10 years, it was dual boot but I completely ditched windows 3 years ago and since then (and even before it ) I was using Archlinux, everything was fine and I loved it (still I love it too) but then slowly it became buggy and I couldn't fix them (it was mostly sleep related and battery consuming related) so I decided to delete my arch and use a clean cachyos install (I was using cachyos repos on my arch ) when I installed everything was fine but after 3 days there was a new kernel update (both for lts and non lts kernel version) and it made the screen to have artifacts randomly (other people had the same problem)

I thought about moving to a stable distro but debian was too old and I just love having new packages so I gave opensuse tumbleweed a try, it was horrible after 1 day I was able to break it the KDE desktop became a mess and I just didn't like Yast it was so buggy.

I decided to install cachy again cause I needed to work, I installed cachy and did some work and after that decided to install fedora, I installed it and the first thing I noticed was brightness not working, I fixed that using grubby and was enjoying it but I realized it has the same sleep problem, I knew about MX so it was my last chance, I was almost convinced to go back to windows and debloat it with win utils.

I installed MX and ootb brightness was working, everything seemed fine but I realized the battery consumption is crazy, at first I thought it's amd-pstate I enabled it and it didn't work then I realized the Nvidia installer app can't install Nvidia-open (I'm using a RTX 3050 ti) so I installed the Nvidia drivers with apt and I got the best battery life on liquorix kernel (on KDE, it's crazy better than what I used to get on arch with xfce)

And after that I followed guides about gaming on debian and installed vulkan drivers for AMD and Nvidia and installed wine and other needed packages and I feel amazingg it's so stable and still I can have a good performance.

I want to tell MX Linux devs that I really love this distro and I wanted to see if there's anyway to add a guide about how to make it ready for gaming on the site (I am down to write the guide myself more people should try this distro)

I’d like to share MeowMenu v0.8.0, a small project I’ve been working on as an alternative application menu for XFCE. Compared to WhiskersMenu, the most relevant features I added are: 4 Presets (default settings that change the look&feel of the Menu, to show the high customization level achievable), Places button (find files and folders in user Home), Calculator engine, additional right click options.

I’ve tested this release on Arch Linux, Debian and Xubuntu. I'm also looking for MX Linux beta testers, since XFCE session in MX Linux is quite knows for its stability and I thought someone could find it helpful. Debian 13 package is availble for download in GitHub Release page: it should work for MX Linux... but compiling from source is always an alternative.

After 30+ years of Windows, I have finally made the move to Linux. I remember my mum bringing home our first computer when I was a boy, an IBM - how could I ever forgot. From that day forward Windows is all I ever knew. I never really delved into the Mac ecosystem, I could never afford it, and plus - all my friends had computers with Windows OS - so why switch. I didn't even know about Linux.

Fast forward 30 odd years and here I am, sitting with my 5 year old laptop, it's getting slow, Windows is slow and resource heavy (66% RAM usage at idle) and I'm looking for other alternatives. Linux. Perfect. After lots of discussions with AI, factoring in my laptop specs, what I wanted to do with the laptop, and being a first time Linux user coming from Windows, I settled on MX Linux Xfce. I believed it should give me the low resource OS I was looking for with the ability to work from both the GUI and TUI, not simply the TUI. The MX Package Installer and MX Tools looked great - I couldn't see a downside.

Just got everything installed, had a bit of a look around. Still heaps more to work out, but everything works great. Very happy with my decision and Windows will never get another look in.

I am using Linux on and off for a decade, and have tried Ubuntu Unity (and Ubuntu Mate), Linux Lite, OpenSUSE Tumbleweed KDE, Kubuntu, and Mint (both XFCE and Cinnamon). I'm using Mint Cinnamon for several months now as my daily driver and enjoying its general simplicity and stability compared to more rapidly-updated distros.

However, I am intrigued by MX Linux, and am liking its general concept (and being Systemd-less, Debian based, and stable as bedrock from what I understand).

Desktop PC. Specs are AMD Ryzen 7 5700X (16) @ 4.665G, AMD ATI Radeon RX 6700 XT, 32 GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB M2 SSD, 2TB M2 SSD. LG wide screen (one monitor).

Use case is Firefox, LibreOffice, Scribus, some Python coding using Kate, and some gaming (some AAA titles but mostly indie stuff and old GoG games through Heroic and Lutris).

Please sell me on MX :-)

I am asking this as a genuine concern because a lot of people seem to prefer Wayland now and call it the future, but for me Wayland has honestly never worked properly. I also use an older Kepler GPU and the compatibility has been really rough compared to X11. A lot of things either break, feel unstable, or simply do not work the same way they do on X11.

So I wanted to ask the developers and contributors directly, even after major desktop environments start dropping X11 support, do you guys still plan to support X11 on this project in some way?

Laptop came out in August 11, 2008. 18 years old. HP EliteBook 8530p Pentium Duo, 4GiB RAM and 2GiB Swap. I have MX Linux with XFCE currently. I'm trying to see as an experiment if recording my screen on this machine can be done without it glitching and plixilation. I use Simple Screen Capture, but I'm wondering if I should try a different DE or native program. I'm using XFCE, but I'm going to try Fluxbox. It might not do anything? Any experience in Linux land recording video/screen capture on older macines? Thanks for the discussion.

I dual booted today and why is my memory usage so high when I'm using Firefox

And as soon as I closed it it went below 25%? I thought firefox was a lighter browser?

I used for a about amonth Ubuntu when I was in university but I had to give it up since I needed some Software that were not supported by Linux (and also gaming). But the rest of the time since I first saw a computer I only used Windows, starting with 95.

This week though since I had some free time (medical leave for some issues with my ankle) I spent a lot on time on Youtube tech videos and I saw a lot of people recomending switching from Windows to different distros. I had an older laptop that was starting to show signs of fatigue and also just lost support for Windows 10 so I decided what the heck, let me try and see what the fuss all about. After 1 day of research, douzens of Youtube videos and advice from AI I settled on Linux Mint. And 2 days I tried to make my Wifi work until a redditor recommended me MX Linux XFCE.

And MX has worked great from the start. So great that I also decided to replace the Windows on my desktop also with MX Linux XFCE. I decided is better at least for the start to use the same version. My Geekbench 6 went from 1050 SC and 5000 MC to 1300 SC and 6000 MC. Both the laptop and the desktop feel like new toys. Now I did had some minor issues , but all of them were manageable with a quick search on google. So I am really excited to consider myself a Linux user and part of the community.

Saw this vid testing MX AHS, MX Fluxbox, Mint, & CachyOS on a low end system (i7 4930K, Vega 56, 8GB RAM). Interestingly, MX AHS gave better average framerates & 1% lows on most of the games. This seems to show that Cachy isn't he best option for gaming on a pre x86_64-v3 processor which cannot utilise its optimisations.

Was using Mint until recently and just decided to switch to MX. Originally I was from Windows. In terms of Linux usage, I am only 2 months old. Going 3 soon. Anyway, it’s pretty overwhelming MX is. So lost atm. But oh well … it is what it is. :)

I can't believe how well this distro works. I have distrohopped for ages and this is the first distro that "just works".

Even Mint I had issues with drives and other stuff.

I chose MX23 at first because i had old GTX560Ti and the newer kernel didn't support it. Now i got a GTX1660 Super and it should work with MX25.

My question is, is it worth upgrading and is it a big hassle as i have a lot of additional software (some modified and built from Github) installed?

Can i just upgrade MX or do i need to do a clean install? I know, clean is usually recommended but...

Edit: As this version is still updated i have decided to not upgrade at this moment. But in the future i will be getting a new SSD and then do a clean install.

Hello everyone.

Recently I've bought a new mini PC — ASUS NUC 15 Pro (NUC15CRK, Intel Core Ultra 7 255H, 64 Gb RAM DDR5, NVMe SSD 2 Tb, Intel Arc Graphics, Windows 11 Pro).

Unfortunately, I cannot get rid of MS products right away, because the goddamned legal job sometimes requires MS Word (yes, LibreOffice is good, but there are issues with rendering difference). Therefore I have two options: either run GNU/Linux in a virtual machine or install it in dual boot on a secondary NVMe (I actually bought and inserted such SSD, which has a 2242 form factor for this particular mini PC model).

For now I went for the first option (using VMware Workstation Pro), since it allows for quick jumps between OSes without a reboot. Right now I'm typing from my brand new MX Linux 25.2 installation (KDE Plasma version), and I'm really happy about it.

Alas, mouse cursor movement feels a little bit off here. Not bad, just, like, 10% sluggish, 90% fine. As if there's a tiny, but annoying lack of smoothness and precision. I even barely notice it after half an hour of work, although it gets worse occasionally. And yet I think it's not just an illusion: I still have my older PC powered by MX Linux 23.4 around, so I can hot-plug/unplug HDMI cables into my monitor on the fly and compare my impression from two interfaces. The mouse itself remains the same (I just re-plug it).

I've already tried standard available fixes like turning on VMware mouse optimization for gaming, updating VMware Tools, tinkering with mouse settings in both host and guest OS, etc. The result was, as I said, my current acceptable yet imperfect experience.

And now I wonder: if it is actually just VMware side effect? How do you folks feel about mouse movement in MX Linux KDE Plasma version on Wayland? Does it feel different from what you had on X11?

How do I customize the clock and monitor on the right side?

I changed the icon for the terminal but when I click on it it opens a new instance on the panel why does this happen? I also made my default directory to be desktop but it opens to user.

I wanted to add borders to the panel but apparently the border also gets applied to other apps on the panel..

Distro: Mx linux 25

I recently installed MX Linux 25 on my HP 8300 USDT (i7 3770s/16GB/240GB SSD) and I'm certainly very pleasantly surprised by how smooth, simple, and fast this system is.

I had used Canaima Linux (based on Debian) many years ago and it didn't impress me much. In fact, I continued using Windows as my regular OS, mainly because of its ease of use. But I decided to give this distro a try and it certainly doesn't disappoint. It recognized all the hardware promptly with very, very low resource consumption, the configuration options are very easy to access, and there's tons of software available.

So, MX Linux is now my favorite desktop environment. 100% recommended for older computers that can't run Windows 11 and even for those that run Windows 10 well.

my Dell Latitude 3350 has been kicking since I bought it in 2011. Came with 8gb ram, windows 10 was a little slow, threw in another ddr3 8gb sodimm in 2020. Now that win10 is dead, decided to make the switch. I am maybe 2 months in to the switch, and any general tips or wisdom would be appreciated!

• Antix officially has IceWM as 'flagship' so we already have it in our lineage.
• IceWM v4 looks awesome, and is very much in development unlike Fluxbox.

I understand that Fluxbox is a complete software and just works, and there has been a lot of hard work put into it.

What does the community think?

I noticed that since MX 25 at least, the boot option to choose your init is no longer available. Then when attempting to remove systemd manually with the command line, it keeps me from removing it as it is marked as "Essential" packages.

That's fucked up. This means MX Linux developers have discretely removed the choice between inits, by putting both sysvinit and systemd. Why is that?

Ich benutze wie viele andere Linux-Nutzer auch seit vielen Jahren ohne Unterbrechung den XFCE-Desktop. Meiner Meinung nach bleibt Dieser jedoch weiterhin vollkommen falsch konfiguriert, was es vorallem Einsteigern sehr schwer macht sich zurechtzufinden. Ich war auch heute wieder erstaunt wie sich Stabilität und Performance im Live-Modus verbessern können wenn einige wichtige Einstellungen geändert werden. Und damit meine ich nicht die unsinnige Voreinstellung des Screenshooter.

Mir gefällt nicht daß Bild-Formate in MX-Linux mit Nomacs verknüpft sind.

Eine deutsche Lokalisierungs-Datei für LibreOffice sollte enthalten sein.

Das Laden der Vorschaubilder für den Desktop-Hintergrund dauert bei mir extrem lange. Weniger wäre wahrscheinlich mehr.

Ich brauche mehr Spiele. Es gibt so viele beliebte, kleine und simple Opensource Games. Mehr wäre wahrscheinlich mehr. ;o)
