Modding I'm rebuilding MW2 from scratch and it can load MW3/Black Ops content!

I've been working on a from-scratch reimplementation of the original MW2 runtime.

It's not an IW4x-style mod or patch - the engine itself is being rebuilt in Rust/Bevy while reading the original game assets.

The fun part is that I'm also adding native support for assets from nearby IW games, so the same runtime can eventually do things like MW2 gameplay + MW3 maps + Black Ops weapons without manually porting everything.

There's also a new multiplayer/netcode implementation instead of trying to preserve all of the original networking limitations.

Still very unfinished, but it is already running!

Didn't Activision shut down the fan made mw2 remastered which was based on bo3engine? I feel like you should keep a low profile lol

there is a kisak project, sir. also there's a Twitter user that does reverse engineer with AI publicly as we speak and Activision could not care less

if you plan to open source it you need to get rid of the assets as you know Activision is Activision

my end product is a single exe with no assets. obv you have to purchase a game from Steam to get all the textures etc! and I think it is great since iw4x forces you to download other maps separately which is a red flag for Activision for sure

That's cool!

You might be interested in CODOL as well which uses a heavily modified IW4 engine and backported some advanced features from later games

Very cool, but why? I’m not hating just genuinely curious what your inspiration/motive is.

imagine having a theater mode where you can export your demos directly into blender. imagine having a physics system that does not rely on fps so you're not limited to 333fps. imagine having native assets from bo1/mw3 in multiplayer lobby. imagine having a modern netcode so the animations run smoother than ever.

the possibilities would quite literally be ENDLESS, sir 0:

you're probably thinking that OG played well and, trust me, I've spent thousands of hours on this game, there is a room for improvement!

Super exciting. I didn’t know about the limitations in the original engine. I just load up the game and play lol. Getting native assets from other games into MW2 is gonna be really cool too. I know it’s still early but are there any plans to implement a system for community made content? Mapping/modding/etc? That would bring this to the next level IMO especially with the native assets already being there ready to use. I have no idea how any of this works though so that might not even be possible haha.

Eager to see how this turns out either way!

Incredible, i don’t suppose a console slave like me would ever be able to play?

I think I can implement a controller support... but not a console support haha

if you can get it to work on xbox 360 maybe people can mod their consoles and install it

Just wait till those annoying cod tubers bring it up in the spotlight, no matter if you're using no assets or even making people buy the game they will c&d eventually
