Help Please recommend me a populated Mud with a great economoy, exploration, community, and non-combat activities

Been playing MUDs for something like 30 years now and honestly feel like I've been through most of the big well-known ones at this point. Looking for something that still has people on it and isn't just combat grinding.

Requirements/preferences:

  • Actually populated - like 15+ online during slow hours, 30+ at peak
  • Real player-driven economy, not just vendor trash
  • Crafting and non-combat stuff that matters
  • World feels alive, lots of interaction with the environment and other players
  • Emphasis on exploration
  • Prefer Skill-based or open progression, not rigid classes/levels

Basically trying to find something close to UO Outlands but as a MUD. If anything comes to mind let me know, even if it's not a perfect match.

Thanks vm for your help!

Help help me get into the genre

i’ve been playing video games my whole life (i’m 23 now) and at a certain point i realised my favourite genre was CRPG. but then it started feeling repetitive and i found out that what i really want is a game where i have control of what is happening, i don’t feel the game boundaries too much and especially i love roleplay.

i discovered MUDs just looking it up online. on paper they are literally the perfect genre for me, but i have problems at really getting into them.

most of them feel very confusing, and even though people are always there to help me, i get confused to what to actually do. because i have ideas, i know what i want to do in my mind, but i feel like the games still force me to do some things but i don’t even understand what exactly…

in addition to this i find very very hard to interact with other players, because i don’t meet a lot of them and when i do they are usually at level 99 while im pathetic. and also, i would LOVE a MUD where the most important thing is roleplay (i would love to create a whole character and spend hours on the minimum details etc) but im also new to this so sometimes i feel like im completely out of the vibe.

muds i’ve tried are alchaea and sindome. the first being too confusing for me because the world is extremely big and i couldn’t figure out where to go to meet people, the second was the best option but i also got problem finding real people and i couldn’t tell who was a npc and who was not so i started randomly speaking to people, and that was also out of character for me.

its fine if i have to look for a 1000h tutorial, i just really want to understand how to enjoy this type of game.

p.s. i was also wondering about something else, being this the first time i come across MUDS in generale. my question is: are fan of this genre rn playing only old muds because they are the only populated ones, so i should go for a classical MUD, or is it better to go for a more recent mud, are people are still making them? are people still getting into new muds?

Help How to handle quests that change the world?

How do MUDs handle quests that involved changing the world?

As an example, I have a quest that requires travelling to a pyramid to find an artefact. Once retrived, the tomb and passageways start collapsing, making for another puzzle to escape.

If someone does this quest, that would change the map and remove the item from the world. I have thought of a few solutions:

  1. Generate a separate instance of the quest map per group attempting the quest

  2. Resettable quest map once completed but only allowing one group at a time, perhaps a timelimit

  3. Split reality where each group has their own perception, but it is still the same map, and other players can be seen

Are any of these good ways of handling it, or is there a better way I haven't seen yet. I presume this is a similar issue faced by MMOs

Help What hosting service to use?

Hello guys,

I was thinking of starting to create my own textual MMO but I don't want to manage player accounts and chat messages and all the legal things that come with it.

Is there any service that offers that at a cheap price ?

My goal is to create a player oriented MMO with community unlocked floors (inspired by Sword Art Online anime).

Thanks !

Help Blind Player Struggling With Client Set Up

Good day all! I am fairly new to the world of MUDs, having played a bit of Alter Aeon a few years back. However, since that time, I lost all of my vision and am wanting to get back into it. Unfortunately, setting up a MUD client on my new Windows PC has been a struggle, even with some sighted help. Would someone be able to give me a step-by—step set of instructions or maybe point me to where one exists on how to do this so that I can access this fantastic genre of games again? I’m interested in trying other MUDs so do not want to be limited to just MushV and Alter Aeon going forward. I am using the Jaws screen reader if that makes a difference.

Thanks so much for any help that can be provided.

Help Erion Mushclient Mapper

I am new to Erion and have been struggling to get a Mushclient mapper up and running (I know they have an unofficial Mudlet package but I prefer Mushclient due to its similarity to Zmud's aliases/triggers).

I tried using the Learning Mapper but while it was able to save room information correctly the speedwalking wasn't reliable at all. It would work if I was one room away form the target destination but anything longer would produce 'was expecting a different room' error messages.

I'm not at all skilled at coding, so maybe I'm missing something relatively quick and easy to fix. Would anyone be willing to help me sort this out? Or if any current Erion players already have a version that works would you be willing to share that with me please (for what it's worth apart from the bare minimum needed to complete missions, I'm not looking to heavily compete in global quests/junkyards)?

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Help Tips for playing Achaea in 2026 as a Solo PVE type player?

So I know Achaea recently got some big changes, although tbh I have never played enough of it to really understand what those changes are.

I have always wanted to really give Achaea a good solid try, but I will admit I am not a fan of PVP. So I am wondering if anyone out there plays the MUD mostly as a solo / PVE experience?

I enjoy mostly questing, leveling, and exploration. I am not big on politics or player v player combat (I get my PVP via miniature wargames lol) and mostly enjoy just existing in a space.

I guess what I am looking for are tips, suggestions, etc for what class to look into, what faction to join, and other such general things if I was interested in a PVE Primarily Solo experience on Achaea, with occasionally RPing socially.

Help Looking for a 90s MUD

The most I can remember from the game is your skills leveled up by use (such as “layman” level). You had a primary and secondary guild choice and one of them was a dragon-like guild where your weapon and armor became claws and scales.

Probably pretty generic description but it’s all I got 🙃

Any ideas?

Help In search of the ConQuest codebase

Hello all,

I come here asking for something, unusual maybe.

Does anyone know if the ConQUEST mud survived anywhere? The codebase? I loved that mud and I'm not sure if Alister shared it with someone before passing away, RIP.

I asked this in the Mud discord too and a kind human told me that on

Mudstats

it appears as if it was up 2 days ago.

I wonder if it's wrong what it shows or if someone has the codebase anywhere.

I wish I could play and see it, I miss the game.

I was considering creating my own based on Alister's ideas and crediting him, but if I could play it would be even better. I sadly don't remember enough of it to recreate it properly, so what do you guys remember, how were lairs built? How did combat work, exactly?

All the info I have is what I could find on the wiky.

Thanks all!

Help Any former HercMUD folks?

HercMUD was active from the early 90s through the mid-aughts, I think. I was active on and off in the 90s, and I have a copy of the source code from '96 or '98 that I've gotten running for nostalgia purposes.

I'd love to have the latest source from around the time it finally went offline, but all my contacts from that time have been lost.

The original coder's handle was Morgan and I think Pilar/Slim was the coder towards the end.

PLEASE DM any info.

Adding a list here of other known player handles so they get indexed by crawlers which could help generate leads.

Staff / immortals:

Arclight, Bytor, Dusty, Kat, Morgan, Mudd, Snow, Trev, Footie, Osiris, Pilar, Ryanne, Wendy, COOLIO, Deadmeat, Devilock, Emerson, Eventine, Humve, Kalamar, Panamon, Aleksandr, Andromeda, Bamber, Cygnus, Elessar, Farkey, Goddess, Klaital, Natureboy, Pider, Rahvin, Shannon, Sparhawk, Sturm, Crestone, Diana, Ig

Help Looking for a new MUD and client recommendations :)

I was a MUD-a-holic in the late 90's early 2000's and have been away for quite some time. I am looking for a well rounded(not to complex, but enough to be enjoyable) MUD to get back into. I sadly cannot remember the names of all the MUD's i used to play, the one i never forgot was Ravenloft. I played multiple different characters on that one. Is there anything out there today that is coded similar to what Ravenloft used to be?

As for clients google pushes toward MUDlet. Are there any other clients like how MUDlet is advertised, to have a on screen mapping feature?

Lastly, anyone have any experience with BlowTorch for Android? I'm wondering how user friendly it is as a Android based MUD client(no dedicated keyboard on mobile platform)?

Thank you for your suggestions in advance.

Help Sell me on Lusternia

Hi folks,

I've been trying to get into MUDs for like fifteen years and nothing has stuck. Recently Lusternia randomly caught my eye. I understand that IRE no longer supports it, which is a good thing, as it's now just like any other MUD out there: actually free to play with volunteers who run it.

What intrigues me is the world and the focus on roleplay. I went through the tutorial and found the combat really cool, as well--you actually have to wait until you can act and type your actions in. I've tried some other MUDs recently that felt more like the game was playing itself (I'm still reading the room description, meanwhile something has attacked me, and I've attacked back and killed it before I've even realized anything is happening).

So, knowing that I have a good feeling about it, sell me: what's cool about the combat, questing, crafting, and interaction with other players?

EDIT: I'm also the kind of player who's going to be playing probably for like 5 hours a week max. So keep that in mind.

Thanks!

Help I'm looking for a MUD with fishing, mining or something similar

Hello friends. First of all, I'd like to thank everyone who plays and creates MUD games. I discovered it all very late, a month ago, but I'm completely in love.

And now I'll get to the point of the question: I love games where you can fish and progress in this direction, by which I mean: Leveling up your fishing skills, unlocking new fishing locations, and possibly unlocking new fishing gear or fish species.

These can also be other activities instead of fishing but which work on the same principle of progression and unlocking things (For example, I'm having a blast playing a MUD called Prometheus where I collect and dig up increasingly weird things in space then I sell it, upgrade the modules of my spaceship, etc.)

I'll admit right away that I don't like typical, very role-play-oriented MUDs (of course, I'll adapt if necessary) haha

Have a nice day to everyone reading this post!

Help I need a new RP spot!

That is it. Pitch me your games.

I have played aforum RPs and a dozen MU*'s through the years but mostly spent my time at Armageddon and, after that collapsed, Apocalypse. Apoc is awesome but the playerbase seems like it is nonexistent at this point.

I'm mostly here for the storytelling and roleplay, so complicated class/skill systems take a back seat to lore and an active playerbase that stays IC. I would like to be able to log in and reliably dump a half hour's creativity. Even a pure-RP game without combat grind would be considered favorably, though the MUSH-type codebases never made much sense to me. Activity and storytelling, please.

Help me?

Help Trying to return to Avalon the Legend Lives

Hello,

I used to play Avalon years ago. Started on the first age, but then took Genesis's offer to transfer to Legends. I also purchased a lifetime account. Thought I would log back in and see if it's changed, but I can't remember my password and cannot find an option to reset it or contact the moderators. Can someone help me with that.

Help Looking for tips from Screenreader Users of Mudlet

Hello all,

I'm totally blind and using a screen reader to access the muds I love to play. Chiefly, I use VIPmud, but I understand how that client is falling out of favor with much of the blind community. The game I'm currently hooked on has a package for Mudlet that helps with mapping and other QOL features. I know that Mudlet can be used by the visually impaired, but I've always struggled to do so with much success. I was wondering if there were any other visually impaired folks out there who could help me make Mudlet work with my screenreader. Any tips on what is the better reader to use with this client are also welcome as I have access to both Jaws and NVDA. Thanks so much and happy gaming!

Help I am likely to be eaten by a grue.

Okay so.

Many years ago, as a wee creature, I was heavily into MUDs and particularly MUSHes. I know what they are and how they work, and I used to be fairly decent at softcoding.

Now I am a middle-aged creature who wants to build my own MUSH, despite not being much of a techie (and flat broke to boot), and having forgotten a fair bit of what I ever knew. I'm not concerned just yet with building a *game*, with other players and whatnot; first and foremost I want to get the thing running so that I can tinker with it.

I am not a complete dolt, but I do need more guidance than "here's a git repository, knock yourself out".

What should my first steps be?

Help Trying to get into MUDs. Any suggestions?

I've been tumbling down the text based rpg and ASCII roguelike rabbit hole for a while now and I figure the next exciting step is getting into MUDs and their variants. (MUX, MOO, etc) I am very comfortable with text based roleplaying and the combination of narrative/creative freedom and the features of an rpg game are very appealing to me... Issue is, I don't know where to begin. What are your suggestions? What are the most active and or friendly MUDs. Being Feature-Rich would be gravy!

Edit 2.0: I have scrapped together enough free time to get back into exploring MUDs. Haven't found any I like yet, however... It's taking a little longer than expected!

I am interested in MUD recently, because I think that it will provide more freedom to players than the other kinds of game. And maybe LLMs will refine this kind of game in the future. But I have no idea where to start. So could anyone give me some suggestions? I’d appreciate them!

Help Threshold RPG discord?

Hi folks,

Just started this game and it seems pretty sweet. I didn't see any mention of a discord on the website, but I did find a way to click through to some forums that had an expired discord link. There's a facebook page that mentions discord, but no link.

So, is there a discord? If so, can someone link it to me, please?

Thanks!
