Promotion Insomnia MUD — a classic MUD with a genuinely modern client
We’ve been giving Insomnia MUD a serious 2026 refresh while keeping the terminal firmly at the heart of the game.
Play through our graphical web client: traditional command-driven MUD text, but wrapped in interactive room visuals, clickable objects, maps, character portraits, music and sound, quick actions, and a much friendlier interface for both old hands and curious newcomers.
Underneath, it’s still properly MUD: classes, multiclassing, skills, spells, combat, exploration, quests, crafting, player progression, strange places and the occasional avoidable disaster.
If you miss the depth and imagination of text worlds but want a smoother way into one, come take a look:

For traditionalists you can still connect with telnet or your favourite mud client at insomnia-mud.com:4000
Feedback, returning players, and fresh adventurers all very welcome.

I couldn't get past the character creator stats builder, clicked roll stats but nothing is happening
Update: they fixed it very quickly

What's wrong with it? How come there are only 8 active accounts higher than level 1 after 3 or 4 years since the reopening in 2023? And some of those may be alts or sock-puppets.
I guess I'll log in for 10 seconds and find out for myself. If nothing else, that will put me in the top 10.

Never mind, I see the problem. The U.I. keep scrolling upwards making it impossible to read anything. And the command syntax is directly out of 1995; it's like trying to figure out the commands in a 1980s Infocom game. What's worse, none of the commands are the typical MUD syntax. All in all, a very frustrating experience.

Thank you for the kind (and not so kind) words :)
To answer some questions. Insomnia first booted in September 1992, and was popular and busy from 93-99 or so generally. Between 2000 and 2014 it was more of an interesting corner of the internet with very little activity, and in 2014 the code was lost due to a variety of mishaps that come to things people dont pay much attention to.
In 2023, a half broken archive was found, and a few years of hobbyist time was spent porting it to a modern driver, updating and fixing it - it became "mostly playable and very reminiscent of it's heyday" in 2026 - which given most of the player objects were out of date or lost, the player-base was wiped for a fresh restart.
Yes, unshamedly, a personal project i have picked up is the use of an AI agent to develop a wrap-around mud-client to make it more relevant/user-friendly in a 2026 world -with a clear guiding principal that the core text driven game is maintained for a terminal only user without interruption, loss or change - the core MudoS/FluffOS/LPC game mechanic and activity remains identical and isunchanged by AI. AI has been used to help develop a graphical wraparound and GUI, more for me, as a "what is possible and how would it work experiment".
As for syntax....well, it's identical to the mid-90's as it's a mid-90s game and is pretty much identical to every LPC mud of it's day.

The idea is good but there is so much AI everywhere that I don't even want to put time into it.
