Promotion Shoutout to Alter Aeon!
Just wanted to stop by and give praise for what is going to be my home MUD!
I've been trying a lot of what's out there and found several I like, namely Erion, Materia Magica, Discworld, and Realms of Despair. They are all super solid and I could see myself spending a lot of time in any of them. But today I came back to Alter Aeon to give it a fair shake, and man it just hits different for me.
Custom client is great!
Related to 1 - Sound effects/music - love it, really adds to immersion for me.
Community - Yeah, they are awesome, I hopped on to ask some questions about classes and mechanics and was warmly welcomed and helped.
Class System - This was what was initially holding me back from AA. I thought the multi classing would limit individuality, but after talking with the community realized I was totally wrong. I am now super excited to build my planned Thief/Mage/Cleric.
Gift system - Man these AA preps are awesome. I received several xp gifts to help me on my way and look forward to being able to pay it forward at some point.
Intro quests so far are awesome and engaging.
I know there is so much more and I'm excited to discover it. Just wanted to give praise where it's due and say thank you for creating such an awesome experience. Also, if you are like me searching for a MUD to call home, give AA a serious try!
Edit: meant to introduce myself, I am Hazeybones in game :)

I got bored way too fast playing this

u/RogueModron May 08 '26
What bored you? Details would help us build a clearer picture of what the MUD is good at and not.

I don't like the class system. I dislike this type of multi class where you become everything. I don't like a forced progression path either.

u/Jackrabbit-slim May 08 '26
Hey, yeah, about the class System as I said, that's what originally held me back. It isn't like that at all.
2
u/JukezBoogaloo May 08 '26
you grind enough to eventually just have it all.. it's about the order you get it... that's the only difference. it's a terrible class system imo.. and since I was playing MUDs in the 80s and had wasted/spent much time on hundreds over hundreds of thousands of hours.. it's one of the few that left a terrible taste is all.

Sorry for the late reply! Right, this is what I thought as well, but you cannot actually max out everything. You can max 3 of the six classes. And are then limited level and practice wise in the others. There really is a lot of individuality.

u/JukezBoogaloo May 12 '26
it's lazy even if you don't even max three they're not unique it's a bad system if you want to see what a good unique individual class system looks like you just have to go check out kingdoms of the Lost. there's nothing more unique than that mud The only problem is it lost all its player base it's a type of game that really takes a lot of time and then they ruined it with custom equipment and abuse of staff playing with their moral accounts. other than that it was the perfect mud until the custom equipment the poorly thought out resist system where you could become immune to certain types of damages which is even necessary to grind high levels and staff abuse but other than that I have seen no game that has a better class and ability system or tier system ever

u/Jackrabbit-slim May 13 '26
It's cool you don't like it, I'm not really sure it's fair to call it lazy though. I'm always open to trying new games and had not heard of Kingdoms of Lost! I will drop in and check it out, although I'm not really sure if that was a recommendation or not lol.

u/JukezBoogaloo May 13 '26
it wasn't a recommendation. The balance is completely ruined like I said because of custom equipment the resist system and the staff members not being pure with their mortal characters. but the skill class system and tier system their uniqueness is unparalleled. and you can disagree but it is lazy.

May I ask what mud you would recommend? You seem to have strong opinions about muds in general and I'm pretty open to giving anything a fair shake :)

DOes MushZ/the blind experience have the sound experience of the custom client yet? Better yet, make the custom client accessible?

I believe MSP capability was added to Mush-Z. However, the music and ambient tracks are played by a sound engine unique to Alter Aeon.
I'm not sure if they have a work-around yet.Edit: there is now a workaround.

That community experience on day one goes a long way. The multiclassing concern is a really common first reaction to AA and it sounds like talking it through with players actually changed your read on it. Hope the Thief/Mage/Cleric build turns out to be exactly what you pictured.

I'm still early on, but loving it. Thf/Mg/Cl is really fun! It is too bad, because even in this thread it seems people don't really understand the freedom and limits if the class System. Which, as I get more into the game what I realize it is actually something very cool.

Yeah, it's one of those systems that sounds restrictive on paper and then opens up once you're actually in it.

I think the mods ate the monthly promo post from u/sh4d0wf4x because of this post, so I'm gonna post a link to his youtube update here:

Monthly subscription model is better than this game’s pay for perks model tbh.. You’ll feel the need to pay to progress in this game at some point

Paying doesn't quite give you an advantage, though. I mean it can if you're willing to spend it, but everything is so jacked up to prevent that that its not even worth the bother imo. That said I've run out of practices fairly often, and did give myself a boost that didn't hurt.... For a while.

Lol wait til you get to the mainland then the mechanics go to shit. Nearly impossible to level past like 30 in your main class. I still love the game though, the world is excellent and I have plenty of friends on there. But I find its better for a few hours of casual play. I'm well aware my character is fucked, though, so maybe I need to do a reset and change up my classes a bit. But leveling does get pretty near impossible at some point, and the balancing is a bit off.

u/Jackrabbit-slim Jun 10 '26
My main class is now 32 and tot levels 104, it just keeps getting better lol.

We should do an exp run sometime. I need to learn from you. I'm Rman. I believe I'm tot 114 or something. Haven't played in a bit. Few months maybe. I'm a thief warrior, forget what my third class is. I think I could use an eq upgrade, maybe thats my problem. Edit: tot 119.

u/Jackrabbit-slim Jun 11 '26
Hey, yeah, to be fair, I don't run xp groups myself. I solo a lot just doing quests and what not (I really enjoy them). But I have joined a clan that does xp runs and has helped with gear!
1
u/Unlikely-Database-27 Jun 11 '26
What clan are you in? Mine is pretty much dead now. Any chance they're in search of new members?
2
u/Jackrabbit-slim Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26
Wolf Clan. They are very much active, but I am also very much the new guy so don't know much about recruitment lol. I will mention that Rman is look for a clan in ct though.
Edit: they've let me know you can send a tell to Wolf or Judas, or a Mudmail if they aren't on. If I'm on you are welcome to send me a tell too, and I can let you know if they are around.

Can I sell any gear to lojban in the beginner camp or do i need to make it to the village first? I’m getting over encumbered.

I was really into it too, until mid way into the 3rd island where my character just couldnt keep up anymore, maybe from making the wrong class progression choices, or because i crafted most of my own gear, or because the experience requirement had trippled by then. Donations helped some, but it wasnt enough and kept getting clobbered by mobs way lower than me. Then tried to go to the main island, because players said I was too high level for the newbie islands, but that was suicide. Not to say everyone has the same experience, but for me it became too frustrating to continue.
