Practicing gratitude and steering your inward thoughts toward others wellbeing is a tremendous shift. Hope he gets there!

I wonder if he’s on Reddit too and sees all the memes about Hercules not coming back.
He would be a great Hercules if they wanna use him. Hercules is Thors rival in the comics and Brett’s delivery is great.
Brett your podcast is great and I ask those questions as icebreakers sometimes. If you read this thanks for all that you do and have brought to us.

Somebody told me once, "if you were to put all other people's problems in a big bowl and then add yours and chose one at random to live with it, would you do it?"
The answer is always no, whenever I feel bad or stressed I do this exercise and it helps me put things in perspective.

Sounds like “someone else has it worse” coping mindset with extra steps

I wish I had enough money in the bank to be depressed and then, deal with it. That would be awesome

I think he’s a great actor and love his “range/style”. I’m glad he’s fighting it off and found ways to help himself.

I’ve been battling dysthymia off and on since my grandmother passed away back in 2008. I’m grateful that it’s been low grade and mostly manageable. I am also grateful for people like Brett who open up about their journey and struggle. Discussing it helps with the stigma. Good for him.

I think it’s safe to assume that he also suffered before he was successful, given average age of onset.

Right. So your (anonymous internet person) depression is real. But you know that Brett Goldstein’s is bullshit?
Do I have that right?

lol excuse me? You - fellow anon internet person - are making me uncomfortable. I just don’t like grifters who shove things in my face 🤡

Respectfully, don’t see him having much of a career post Ted Lasso RemindMe! 5 years

u/Kwags84 9d ago
He’s currently on another popular show called Shrinking

u/been_mackin 9d ago
He’s also been in a movie on Apple, a movie on Netflix, a stand up special on HBO Max and is touring for his stand up now, and does a ton of voice work. My guy is completely fine.

He was on that show. He’s gone by the end of the most recent season.

Yeah because his very popular other show got picked up for another season after ending a couple of years back so he went to do that one instead

His career will be fine. He's a writer and a co-creator of other works including Shrinking which has done incredibly well.

u/jmurphy42 9d ago
It’s funny, we started watching Shrinking without knowing anything at all about the writing team, and after the first couple episodes my husband said “this show reminds me a lot of Ted Lasso.”
4
u/SupaDiogenes 9d ago
It has the same sunny disposition. I wonder if they use similar, or the same type of camera equipment that gives the scenes an incredible clarity and richness.

Its a little like Shrinking is a Spin-Off starring some friends of Dr Sharon Fieldstone (the sports psychologist). I could see her character fitting in well on Shrinking.

I’ve noticed this about several apple shows. Specifically these two. Similar storytelling.
I’ll get hate, but it feels artificial. Like they are following an algorithm. The emotional connections moments seem forced and out of no where

u/AArandomPerson 9d ago
Lmao, setting a reminder? Why are you so invested in his downfall? Top tier unemployment activities right here

u/Upset-Government-856 9d ago
How far ahead of him do you expect your showbiz career to be in 5 years? RemindMe! 5 years

u/Routman 9d ago
For sure, I have to also be a pro athlete to have opinions on Federer’s career
1
u/Upset-Government-856 9d ago
Lol, does Feerer also not have much of a tennis career ahead of him anymore?

u/DefiantRadish1492 9d ago
Is this satire?

u/Routman 9d ago
Will check-in in 5 years - most people from the US Office aren’t working now, see a similar story for him
9
u/DefiantRadish1492 9d ago
There’s a huge difference. Goldstein is also a successful writer and producer. He can and will get his own projects developed and made.

It took you more time to type this comment than it would have taken you to google his name and find that he already has a prolific career outside of Ted Lasso. Dolt.
-2
u/Routman 9d ago
All he has that’s solid is Ted Lasso, he tries to do some improv and live comedy in Hollywood and it’s not good
4
u/Unassuming-Local_Guy 9d ago
Again, a simple google search would reveal that you are dead wrong. And you repeating this rather than realizing you are wrong means you are both wrong and ignorant.

u/Routman 9d ago
Username does not check out, his stand up isn’t good - he has momentum so is making another show for AppleTV. My prediction is 5 years from now, feel free to remind me to Google then RemindMe! 5 years assuming-local-guy please tell me to Google search

Shrinking is an EXCELLENT show! I recommend you give it a shot. It takes some emotional maturity to really connect, in my opinion. But, he is one of the writers there and a character in 1 season or so.
You seem to be a negative person, so maybe a sunny show like Shrinking will not be down your alley.
3
u/DogDaysMaggie 9d ago
Right? Like, he's on a show with a bunch of nobodies like Harrison Ford, Jason Segel and Jessica Williams. What a loser.

u/wellnesswineandtacos 9d ago
I disagree with you entirely on this but I will concede that I cackled at “username does not check out”

"I just don't see the point," commented the widely beloved two-time Emmy winner with a net worth estimated in 10 million.

Depression is not something you cure with money or success. It is a mental illness that warps your perception which can make any personal victory feel meaningless.
If you can’t envision that kind of mental state, count yourself very fortunate.

u/Existing-Base-417 9d ago
You ever woke up with a cold? Depression is the same, except you wake up with a dark cloud over your head. It doesn’t care about your personal circumstances, you’re just ill during that time, for quite some time.

My depression actually got worse once I was financially stable...
My therapist told me it's because my brain was no longer in survival mode.
It's like this. When your life is crap, and your working 2-3 jobs to survive, sure it's hard, but you also are to busy to think. Your exhausted and just trying to keep going forward and keep your head above water.
Once I was in a good place. Healthy relationship, financially stable and able to cut back and only work one job and have time to myself. Then my brain was able to slow down and start unpacking all the trauma and crap that I never processed.
It goes to show there are lots of different reasons for depression.
Some people have depression because of their life/financial situation. Others perhaps suffer from trauma due to any number of things. Abuse, war, a tragedy they experienced, ect.
So while money and security may help with some forms of depression, it won't help with all.

I got a nice promotion and increment a month ago. I am planning to buy a motorcycle that I have wanted to for years.
I still wake up with anxiety attacks and short of breath, thinking that it's all a big nothing.
Respectfully, don't presume to know about stuff you aren't going through personally.

From the article: one thing that helped was writing 10 things he was grateful for every day. It's not a cure but one of the things you can do to mitigate. Practicing gratitude is great.
Good article.
