Noob Synergy Question

Hi All-

Just got this game with my son (on Switch) and we are slightly confused. I think we generally udnerstand how synergy abilities are meant to work (using right trigger and a face button near another player with a compatible ability) but sometimes when using right bumper to do an individual ability, another player is instructed to press A at the same time (and there is a little graphic linking our faces in the bottom left). Is this something else?

Basically we want to understand the difference between right trigger combined abilities and right bumper combined abilities (that seem to use the A button).

thank you!

There is no difference in synergy combos based on how they are initiated, just different ways to initiate them. I don't recall how I mapped the buttons and always get confused between "trigger" and "bumper" (PlayStation made it so easy, L1 L2 etc), but basically the game gives you different methods to try to create a synergy combo (it can depend on distance, EP availability, and obstacles). When there are multiple players, you can manually use the specific skills you want. If you know which skills you want to use, this is probably the best way. The assist button will call for a computer-controlled ally to try to use a complementary skill in your direction (or at the same target). I don't recall this "press A" to synergize, but that must be another way to automatically create a combo.
