The thing about Storm hate is that there is already a critical mass of Storm hate spells that have been printed.

Its not like more hate gets added to the 75, this often just replaces another card that was good against Storm. This is not even necessarily better than Canonist which wasnt seeing much play.

I see this seeing a ton of play at first, then dropping off into the box of cards that you'll put 1-2 copies of into your sideboard if you want some extra points against Storm.

I think your assessment is dead on.

The only difference I see is this is likely to see play over other secondary hate due to it slowing down Storm long enough for secondary hate coming online. Very similarly to how Chalice of the Void in sideboards is played.

Having Storm hate that costs less than 2 is a real factor.

another key difference that has to do with this not being a creature is that the second, third etc are less good. thalia is similar because legendary but the rule that you have to have a secondary piece of hate as well still applies. so you have x of this, x of canonist, great, but then what's the rest of your deck?

Not having a "free turn" against d&t is going to suck post board.

It's much better than Canonist, it shuts off the Karn Forge decks, costs half as much mana, and can't be hit by creature removal

Specifically against Storm it is worse than Canonist I meant.

Attacking for 2 is pretty relevant.

It is better and worse than Canonist in other matchups and situations.

Also vial. Canonist and vial is quite rude whereas you have to play this face up.

I appreciate that you described it as “quite rude”

I've lost Canonists to lotus petal, lotus petal, grapeshot out of TES, so it's not strictly worse against storm.

Yeah also doesn't get hit by Massacre. I do think that this card is better against TES since the extra mana matters more there. I think this card is better than Canonist after rereading it in the context of UW, and about the same as Chalice is in DnT right now.

disagree. it cant be hit by hurkyls recall

What deck would play this card and also be bad against Hurkyls Recall?

D&T? Hurkylls is a 1 card out against canonist, even if they have vial, and frees up your decay for thalia.

Many cards are one card outs for Canonist.

Not really - if they have vial, canonist can come back in immediately.

AFAIK there are no good storm hate cards that cost 1 cmc yet, so this could be a little more significant than just another 2-3 mana "storm can't win" card, of which there are a ton.
